The Pipettes have lost two members; RiotBecki and Rosay, but also gained two new members in the process.

In a statement from the existing Gwenno, the singer says of their band's future: "The Pipettes have two new members, Ani and Anna. We are demoing up 20-25 new songs, with an eye to recording a second album in the Summer. We want to tell you all about them, but we're very much head-down working on new material at the moment."

"This means that RiotBecki and Rosay have left to pursue other musical pursuits (which will be brilliant when they emerge), we wish them all the best, we're all still great friends and news on their pursuits will be closely supported by us."

"People may be confused by such a drastic change in line-up but please rest assured - if we were to be an imitation of ourselves we would stop. Plus the Pipettes has more members come and go than major labels have A&R men, it's just another day in the office for us (plus we've got to go one better than the Sugababes)."

The statement concludes, "Thanks for all the continued support over this period and we're incredibly excited to be working toward bringing you a new album that will be unlike anything we (or anyone else) have ever done."

They never got on apparently and were demoing new tracks up until a few months ago or so so they must have really fallen out it would seem. Can't see myself following these Ani and Anna girls :/

Furthermore they've now signed to Polydor. Major labelness ahoy...

Oh :o

Tbh I doubt anyone who surfs the Pop forum would care much. The vast majority of their fanbase are indie. Indie label, indie releases etc

ugh.

I don't really care for them. But for some reason I am looking forward to their new material.

Is that weird?

I'm disappointed with this :( It just won't be the same as much as I agree Gwenno was the best, I quite like the fact that Rosay was so hot yet she was such a b**ch when you met her for some reason  Doubt I'll like them as much but we'll see...

To be honest I'm not that bothered as they've kept they're most identifiable sound which is Gwenno's vocals.

All I'm bothered about is what the new material sounds like, and how good the new material is. I hope they can still bank on Radio 2's Stuart MaConie trying to play them at every opportunity and with a major label backing them they might be able to take on the Sugababes & Girls Aloud.

After all, there is still is a gap in the market for a British Girl group who can nail live vocals as both the SBs & GA have proved on several occasions that they can't. Which is why they've both failed miserably to gain any success in the USA.

yeah its good to have some indiepop in here rather than lose it in the mainstream pop section. sometimes indie thats upbeat pop music is better than just another post-Pete D band who wants to be the arctic monkeys but ends up as the new Shed Seven innit!!!

should have the Ting Tings in here as well for their warholian loft living and 'art happenings'.

and as for indie labels - well i dont think it matters if its an indie label as in most cases the large indie labels will be at the stage where people like Virgin, Heavenly, Food, Ensign and Chrysalis are before they were absorbed by EMI - and yeah even one of the most individual indie labels outthere - Mute - is owned by EMI as well

and there will be loads of people at indie labels who will end up head of a major department - like Korda Marshall at Warners - one of the most powerful people in the business - who Warner aquaired the services of once they took over his Infectious records label (Ash and with Mushroom - Garbage), who was also responsible for Wedding Present and PWEI at RCA (Sony BMG)

but why would you want to turn them to take on Sugababes & Girls Aloud - they have their mainsteam marketplace and these have their other area.

(note: you probably could add something about the Vindaloo Summer Special stars we've got a fuzzbox and we're gonna use it here or food records/st etienne/ice rink's punky duo shampoo)

I think you might have inadvertently stumbled upon what I'm thinking.

Back in the 1980s We've Got A Fuzzbox & We're Gonna Use It start off as a cool indie style act on where they were signed to the indie Vindaloo record label releasing records like this with a heavy guitar influence sounding like a cross between early Bananarama, Jesus & Mary Chain & Sigue Sigue Sputnik:

We've Got A Fuzzbox & We're Gonna Use It - Love Is The Slug (1986)

But then they signed a major record label deal with WEA, lost a band member, shortened their name, and went on to release a highly polished pop sound where they did not even play on their own records, expensive videos, with a sexier image to match which brought them a brief run of chart success, but at the cost of the critics who accused them of selling out and this seemed a repudiation of their punk DIY ethos. They had split up by they end of 1990 acrimonously when the lead single from their never released 3rd album failed to reach the top 75.

Fuzzbox - International Rescue (1989 UK#11)

Who knows but that resume could well apply to the Pipettes by 2011.

Aye, I liked Rose but her vocals were awful. Of course, it means of the three girls that none of them are original members any more.

and it is this 'ethos' which has to be thought about when thinking whether it has indie credibility bestowed on it - the Vindaloo record is not slick and polished, its quite shambolic but its a fun pop-rock n roll sounding thing - but its still indie as it still has that punk idea that anyone can do it and have a go however upbeat it may sound - its about maintaining that ethos and mentality
