Ok, but my point really was that The Saturdays are a pop breath of fresh hair. Its good to see a chart full of american artists and loads of different 'cooler' genrered artists have The Sats in the top 10.

Duffy isnt pop! well she may be classed as such, the same as most artists in the charts now! To my ears she falls in to the soul genre!! how can you confuse that with pop? i dont mean because shes become popular now- which technically is what pop means.

The Saturdays are pure pop, or 'stereotypical pop'- which there isnt really much of in the charts at the moment. Probably becuase its quite dated, pop has moved on. However i don't think the Saturdays with ITIL or other songs on the album sound overly dated.

It is good to have more pure pop in the charts.

'Warwick Avenue' is the typical Middle Of The Road tosh that Radio 2 lap up. As far as I'm concerned it all falls into the genre of pop no matter where its influences lie...
But that would suggest some vague liking for me, when in fact you've made it quite clear you don't respect me at all...

Actually, you're absolutely totally WRONG (big surprise there  ).... I actually DO have some respect for the fact that you stick by your guns.... Dont confuse the fact that I post aggressively in absolute opposition to your views for some kind of petty hatred..... I think you're completely wrong most of the time, but I have actually defended you against some of Russ' more nasty, mean-spirited personal attacks in case you hadn't noticed.... I've taken great pains not to resort to name-calling even though you irritate the hell out of me sometimes..... :P

Duffy isnt pop!

What the heck you talking about...? Course she is.... Duffy is basically a modern-day equivalent of Dusty Springfield, erm, so Dusty wasn't a "mere" Pop Star either I take it. Dusty certainly tried different styles, but she essentially remained a "Pop Star".... GAWD, why is it that people want to try and totally mis-label things......??? Duffy is POP..... Beth Gibbons (Portishead) on the other hand, you could say SHE is a Blues/Soul singer....

Duffy is pop as in popular.

The simple fact is if Amy Winehouse had not gone global multi-platinum, then the likes of Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi, Adele, Beth Rowley, etc would not have been signed up and heavily promoted.

As for the comparison to Dusty Springfield, well Duffy has appeared on the Al Murray Pub Landlord chat show, which would be like Dusty Springfield appearing with Alf Garnett back in the 1960s......

Dusty Springfield show with Woody Allen & Alf Garnett

:D

.......... Anyway back to the topic in question.

It looks like The Saturday's have not done what I expected with a Westlife/McFly spike before falling away.

There intial sales were poor in my view compared to the hype surrounding them. However, their record company should be encouraged by how the track is doing on iTunes as its sales are holding out very well, so if this continues then they could have a lengthy chart run to gain momentum and a fanbase.

I'm also impressed to read that the album is not going to be released until early 2009, so ensuring it does not get lost in the glut of releases (thinks of what happened to All Saints comeback) that always occurs in the last quarter of the year. So it shows that the Record Company does know what it is doing.

However, having finally watched the PCDs new video I just cannot understand why they went running scared of the Saturday's single, as it is far superior IMHO to my ears and eyes (and I don't like the PCD's).

PCD and The Saturdays are barely comparable though, are they? I mean, the Saturdays are being aimed at mid-to-older teens and slightly-electro, mostly-pure pop music, and they are being marketed in a way which perhaps implies some sort of desired credibility - by that I don't mean that they're looking for critical acclaim or anything, but just that they would like to make a name for themselves and stick around, and do all of that with their clothes firmly on...

Whereas PCD care not about any of that, and are happy to sell with their boobs as much as their music (which I do happen to like). I'm sure the PCD's putback was just because the album has been delayed a little, nothing to do with any competition; their comeback hype is sure to earn them a Top 3 placing anyway.

And Grimly, I actually hadn't noticed any defenses against those 'attacks' But thanks all the same. Perhaps I need to keep a steely eye out.

You are so funny.

Of course they are completely different.

1. Both are girl groups with five members in the band.

2. Both are manufactured pop bands put together by their respective Record Companies (PCDs = Interscope Records)

3. Both have a failed solo singer songwriter in the group (PCDs have Nicole Scherzinger ..... the one who sings all the lead vocals and is dating F1's Lewis Hamilton).

4. Both groups feature members from former manufactured pop groups (PCDs Nicole was in Eden's Crush).

5. The new PCD single is a move away from their R'n'b sounding debut album instead sounding like the Electro-Pop of Britney's last album "Blackout".

6. The Saturday's have done a photo shoot for a forthcoming monthly edition of FHM magazine.

So? The public aren't going to think 'Oh, the Pussycat Dolls and The Saturdays both feature a singer from a disbanded cheesy pop group, both are manufactured, and both have five members, therefore I must choose which one to buy!. My point is that their SOUND is STILL completely different. However 'pop' you think When I Grow Up is (and I'd like to beg to differ that they're moving away from their R&B sound, having roped in Timbaland, Sean Garrett and other R&B producers for the new album), it's still an entire genre away from If This Is Love. There are no similarities in the music and no reason for PCDs to go 'running scared' as you so ludicrously claimed. The simple fact is that When I Grow Up was put back to September because that's when the album is out.

what is the definition of this so called 'Pure' Pop though?

I see it being number 8, but I hope its stuck at 7, or climbed slightly!
If it's only reached #8 then that will be classed as a major flop by the record company, the second single will have to be OUTSTANDING! or they're gone by Christmas.

positions aren't as important, but they do help, influence that important issue of SALES.

A song that sold 100k and peaked at #8 would be a greater success than a 50k (total sales) McFly #1

Look, if they cant get the (arguably) biggest girlgroup in the UK atm - Girls Aloud - anywhere near number 1 then if you think they were even dreaming nevermind expecting anything better than no.5 for The Saturdays, you've got another thing coming.

Fascination are easing the public in, 'Up' as you say has to be and is outstanding. No-one yet can get the full effect of the song, but with the studio clip i've heard, the live performances and the total special effects filled video premiering sometime this month - im sure it can better #8/#7.

the difference between the PCD and the Saturdays:

Ok, so who are?!

12 million people watching Cheryl and the girls as her 'team' this month on the X Factor.

An Audience With... Girls Aloud airing this xmas.

A new album and single this year.

Their autobiography.

Their massive 35 DATE arena/summer tour.

DOMINATING the tabloids day in, day out.

Their own tv show for ITV2.

KitKat adverts/sponsership.

Appearing on the main stage at V Festival in 2 weeks time.

2 DVD's 'Passions' and the live concert (making it their 7th and 8th dvd releases).

It may not be exclusively down to the music sales, but as a whole they are without doubt the biggest UK girlband around.

The PCD comeback song is exceedingly poor, not a patch on any of the singles from their first album.
