or did i just get swayed by the Be Your Own Pet article.

Ok, so i brought NME this week for the free Coldplay 7", and i noticed that NME didnt look AS bad as normal, could it be getting better? They still have the jackass that is Conor Nicholas, but some things caught my eye, a better layout, a Billy Bragg guest column (and it looks like they might be getting more differnt guest columns every week), Carl Barat's choice of music under titles like 'I Wish I'd Made...' 'Ive Played To Death...' and i always find those sort of articles intresting, then also free vinyl thats always a plus sign, an article on Be Your Own Pet (most people proberly wouldnt care about that but i love them :) ) A down point though is rating The Best of The Vines 2/10 which should be way higher becuase The Vines are amazing, also there is another weekley feature called 'Roots' which 'traces the influences of current albums' its proberly made up but kind of intresting i thought, The live reviews are still abit c**p though....

so could NME be finally be half decent rather than $h!t.

haven't touched the nme for a couple of years after getting so annoyed with the quality of the journalism... i doubt it will be ever be as good as when i started reading it in the early 90's...
I vowed not to buy it after the 'Morrissey is racist' saga <_< But because of the Coldplay 7" I had to and I must say it is miles better than it's been for a long time! (last time I bought it was for the Babyshambles 7" but I stopped seriously buying it around three years ago  ) The Coldplay interview is a great read as is the be your own PET article, when I move back home I may started stealing it from my brother again like I used to.
I still say that a single give-away and a couple of semi-decent articles hardly makes up for the "Morrissey Is Racist" and the 'Love Music/Hate Racism' farragoes..... While that prick of an editor and his minions remain, NME wont change to any meaningful degree.... It needs to be totally overhauled....

I hated the NME from years back when it used to (99%) of the time slag off Jeff Lynne and ELO (my faves of all time). It was always rubbish - seeing itself as 'above all others' when it was boring and po-faced. The Meloday Maker on the other hand, NME's arch-rival at the time, while itself not very good, at least didn't seem to take itself too seriously. I do have a look at it in the newsagents from time to time now (its easier to kop a sneaky glance at now that it is a tabloid).

Too little too late. Strange, I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I thought it seemed a mite better than before.

Maybe you'd agree with the Culturdeluxe review of 'Best of The Vines' more?

well mojo (i think - tho i could be uncut - both have free cds on the cover) gave it 4 stars out of 5 - and i guess that the USP of the NME has to reflect that 'indie snobbery of the new' more - the b-lister build them up knock them down - so obv they are gonna give the vines a $h!t review just like they will give the 2015 release album 'the very best of the presets' a 1 out of 10 review saying that it 'like INXS in electrowank hell' that is if electro has not been rebranded by then  (for example in a review the other week a comparison was made with an old grebo band called Pop Will Eat Itself who were criticised for being really useless and a bunch of total f***ing idots but looking at the hits singles book seeing theyve have had 15 hit singles and that jounos like using the 'i think pop has really eaten itself this time' line in their work - im guessing that 15 - 20 years ago the NME would have them on the front cover like every other week and would give their albums like 9/10...

...however when i put nme pop will eat iteslf and front cover into google - this what came up ?!?!?!  but i guess you get the idea.

It'll have to get way better before it manages to get back to the standard of journalism that is once exhibited....

but for quality music journalism in a magazine - dont you just go to something like the word?

tbh I haven't noticed much change between this week and last week issue apart from a few graphic design updates

the vinyl is an alright promo for the record companies/mag's abc reach - tho i'm guessing i will enjoy gill scott-heron, bob marley and william bell on the changing man-paul well free cd from mojo.

The NME used to love Pop Will Eat Itself. Maybe not so much in their RCA days, but everyone knew about them then so there was less chance to be smug about 'knowing a new band'. The thing is, the Poppies were really good...just because some current hack who was still in short trousers slags them off, it doesn't mean they weren't good. Hadouken! have nicked all of their ideas for their new album and yet that's hailed as original.

I was always a bit more of an MM fan myself tbh... You're right about the humour angle....

I was reading NME from round about late-80s to mid-90s (I kinda stopped when it started taking on the appearance of a Sunday supplement... As for MM, oh dear, they did screw up by attempting to go head-to-head with Kerrang!!).......

I dont really remember NME being particularly vicious about ELO though...
