The weekly look at what has been selling this week up to now. In tribute to the days of the now defunct MRIB Singles and Album Charts. Dave takes a look at charts, that will appear on Chart Show TV, and brings them up to date with sales, up to now.

So, this week we have the top films and dvds, the latest singles and album charts, and slip back to May 1989, to see what was happening back then.

Firstly, let`s take a look at the top films this week...

01 NE IRON MAN

09 10 HAPPY GO LUCKY

10 NE PERSEPOLIS

IRON MAN draws in £5,465,105 in a week! In a normal week the money made by the number 2 film, would have been enough to keep it at the top. (The top uk films are from the uk box office, curtesy of Screen International).

Here are the top dvds this week...

01 NE GOLDEN COMPASS

02 01 I AM LEGEND

03 02 ST TRINIANS

08 05 RUN FAT BOY RUN

09 06 BALLS OF ARMS

A big fall in dvd rentals and sales this week (well we had some decent weather)!! 70,000 people either rented, or bought GOLDEN COMPASS. (The top uk dvds are compiled by a division of MRIB/Blockbuster).

HOLLY JOHNSON dethroned by SIMPLE MINDS in 1989, after just the one sneaky week! JASON DONOVAN was still growing in success, following hottily from KYLIE (88, had seen the wedding in Neighbours). Althouh Jason`s album was 10 GOOD REASONS, it actually had 11 tracks (which puzzled many), then after listening we found that the title was actually from the single, "TOO MANY BROKEN HEARTS". After 2 weeks, Jason knocked out SIMPLE MINDS, from the top. TEN GOOD REASONS spent the rest of 1989, in the top 20 albums. THE CURE (are back for 2008, single released Tuesday). GUNS N` ROSES became worldwide superstars in the 90s, but it was still rather early days here. BOBBY BROWN (later Mr Whitney Houston) originally sung with 80s pop black kid sensation, "NEW EDITION". CLANNAD smashed into the chart, with a collection of new and old hits (and the unmistakeable sound of ENYA). KYLIE headed back up the chart...did she have a single this week in 1989? Let`s find out...

Wow, the MRIB Top 50, in 89...KYLIE hit the top, Queen didn`t! BEATMASTERS were rather annoyingly shouting "Who`s In The House"....I remember my dad mis-hearing this as "Balls in the House", maybe he was right!! MIDNIGHT OIL took a slow climb to top 10 status (they were Australian)....EDELWEISS from an Alpine region gave us BRING ME EDELWEISS, and ripped off the melody of ABBA`s "S.O.S.", and I believe were taken to court for it. There was the do you like DEBBIE GIBSON or TIFFANY debate (but by now TIFFANY had practically disappeared from the scene). CHAKA KHAN re-mixed a 1978 classic, and beat the peak position. KON KAN nicked a sample from LYNN ANDERSON`s 1971 top 5 hit, "ROSE GARDEN". MORRISEY managed to hang in the chart for a second week, unusual for him! STEFAN DENNIS was also in NEIGHBOURS...SWING OUT SISTER were on their last legs...I don`t remember the ARETHA/ELTON song at all! TOM JONES sang PHYLLIS NELSON`s 1985 hit...TEXAS found it hard to follow up their first hit...Was JOHN LYDON "DISAPPOINTED" with such a small hit?! Who remembers the group "1927?" JOHNNY NASH`s 1972 hit was re-mixed for a coffee advert (and was not a patch on the original). Taliking of coffee, NESCAFE were the sponsers of the NETWORK CHART (alongside David "Kid" Jensen....and here 19 years on, NESCAFE celebrate their 70th Anniversary!

Hang around...Dave will put up the up to date singles, shortly....when he comes in!

) Position without downloads only and = Is the Chart Show tv position (even though, once again they played the wrong chart)!

Madonna takes the crown for a 4th week, and sells almost 3,000 more than Wiley. What will happen next week? Well, CARDIFF CITY FANS, THE CURE, TING TINGS, CHANELLE HAYES, PIGEON DETECTIVES, CASSIE, DAVID JORDAN, HOT CHIP, LIL` MAMA, PARAMORE, and NICK CAVE will take on the top 75. Back to this week, and tonight I find CAPTAIN, and QUEEN in the top 60, LIL` MAMA/CHRIS BROWN, TAIO CRUZ (I CAN BE) both in the top 70. Losers this week are DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, NOAH AND THE WHALE, SHANIE, ATTIC LIGHTS, CHARLATONS, and CUT COPY who practically miss, with practically no downloads what so ever.

Quickly I would say information seems to say that Chanelle Hayes, Ting Tings, and those Cardiff City Fans, will enter the top 20, next week. Now where are those that did not believe James Fox, would do it this week?! ;)

Don`t forget Chart Show tv tomorrow 3 - 6.30pm, for the top 40, and bubblers/new releases. Hopefully they may play the correct chart this week! This chart is compiled by the chart show tv top 40, minus airplay and added sales info. If anyone get`s a moment, take a look at Tesco`s, new download site...they have HARD CANDY credited to COUNTING CROWS, whatever next! Teething problems there! If you remember 2002, Counting Crows did release an album called "Hard Candy", too...I wonder if any other artists, have released an album, with the same name as someone else.

5 new entries in the physical chart that's amazing. You can't even get 5 new entries in the top 10 in the offical chart no more like the old days, I think the record is 7 new entries in the top 10. I don't think we see that many new entries ever again inside the top 10, its hard enough to get 1 new entry to surface inside the top 10 every week.

Let's hope Kylie sticks around.

Thanks for posting the charts as usual.

Actually looking again, there are 4 new, in that top 5! :w00t:

Here is a quick Saturday morning update...Tomorrow expect Ne`yo to be in the top 20 or close, Duffy (Warwick Avenue) will probably jump over James Fox, and the team. Santogold will jump ahead of Jay Sean, Girls Aloud might fall from 28, Lil` Wayne will head closer to the top 40, Wideboys will slip back from 34. Sara Bareilles could be in front of Wideboys. Vampire Weekend, will be in the top 70 without a doubt.

Not much to go on with Viva La Vida (where there is a definate sales problem). A note on download charts: The lowest a download only track, has ever been in the combined physical/downloads charts, is 39 positions lower than the download only chart position (whether it be iTunes, HMV, Tesco, MSN, or Woolworths). Woolworths offer downloads at 59p, slightly cheaper than 79p, which most other download sites charge. Sounds like a free ad! No, but Woolies do not offer that big of range of downloads, compared to other sites. Currently "Violet Hill", is number one on iTunes and number 24 on HMV`S download chart. As "Viva La Vida", is only charting on iTunes maybe it won`t hit the top ten, let alone top 20 when in the combined chart.

Ne-Yo's single is not even out till the end of June :o I think this is going to be the hit of the summer this year.

Or it will peak and burn out before the physical is out? That's happened to a few hits so far hasn't it?

Could do. Not released physically until 30th June! Maybe it will surpass Coldplay, way before then ;)
