Jonathon Ross has been rebuked for debasing broadcasting standards by making a vulgar suggestion on national TV to Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow that he would like to have sex with her.

Britain’s highest-paid television entertainer said he wanted to “****” married mother of two Ms Paltrow if his wife would give him permission.

His liberal use of the f-word on his recorded BBC1 chat show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross prompted gasps from the audience and the interview tone left Ms Paltrow, 35, speechless and looking shocked at times.

The astonishing language – thought to be the first time a major film star has been spoken to in such a direct sexual way on television– has been heavily criticised by watchdog Mediawatch UK and an MP on the Commons culture and media select committee.

Did Jonathan Ross go too far?

Is it fair that licence fee-payers have to foot the bill for this type of programme?

Should Ross be warned to tone down his language in future?

British humour maybe?

...

I've noticed words like crap and shit being said on the tv at 7:30/8:00pm before. Not bad words really, but some people DO like to take offence and moan about it. But tbh, swearing on TV can't really go any further then what it has done, I've heard all sorts on my tv. :P

Yes, it HAS gone too far :o Even in my relatively short life I've seen standards fall. My dad used to make us switch the TV off strictly at 9pm and I was never subject to nudity or sexual language at all (at least on TV). When I was finally allowed to watch past the watershed I really noticed the difference! Now, when you switch the TV on at 7pm sometimes you see some of this stuff 2 hours earlier... so obviously something's gone wrong somewhere.

I always pick out bad language on TV before the watershed (or even at all) because of the way I was brought up I guess, and it's ridiculous how common it is now.

I haven't seen the episode - if its been aired. I don't think it's that extreme considering Wossy - but I doubt Paltrow would be aware of his humour so in the context its a bit too extreme.
I noticed someone was called a son of a b**ch the other day on something (I forget what) at 7:30, and I was appauled! I sound so old! But like Andre, I've seen standards fall in my shortttt life (I'm 19 donchaknow). I'm not appauled at much post-9pm, so am not particularly bothered about 'f***' at a show that airs at 10:35. But before then, yes, it bothers me.
Didn't see the incident but Gwyneth Paltrow would have reacted that way if someone had so much as blinked at her. That humorless and utterly talentless b**ch always looks shocked, appalled and offended.

I am a realist, kids are going to hear 10 times worse than that on school playgrounds, also Jonathan Ross is known for a very adult sense of humour so people know what to expect out of his shows, he is not Michael Parkinson his style is notoriously vulgar so I think people who are easily offended should not watch Jonathan Ross

I don't think there should be sex on tv or extreme violence until late at night but swearing goes on all the time in real life at work and in schools and in the home so I can't believe anyone is going to be corrupted language wise by anything they see on tv

Wouldn't he have to get 'permission' from Gwynneth's husband as well though.... :naughty:

I dunno, I suppose it can be read as being offensive or whatever, but I remember years ago seeing a famous French entertainer (was it Serge Gainsbourg...? I cant remember..) saying that he wanted to fukk Whitney Houston on a French chat show..... So, it's not really all that shocking...

I think we should all bear in mind, that Johnathan Ross' show IS a late night, ADULT chat show, and frankly I dont really see the big deal...

No it hasn't they're just WORDS  And it's only stupid old biddies who phone up and complain when someone DARES to say a word on TV, it's like they're saying "F*ck off Gladys who's 93 from Weston Super Mare" It's an adult show so if you don't like that's what the bloody remote is for. -_-
I don't care about Jonathan Ross really, he's funny and I always try to watch his show. What annoys me is that they are used before watershed -_-
I don't think swearing should be used before 9pm, but after I couldn't care less. No swear words offend me at all, when I watch (mainly panel shows like MTW and HIGNFY) and there are a few f's & c's I really don't care, I'm probably in the minority but I don't find anything wrong with swear words at all....

i know kids know all the swear words, its nothing new to them, but should tv promote it?.. the more we use them the less impact they have, so new more extreme language will be used to fill the void.

woss is a vile creature anyway... he needs a thump.

Maybe kids hear it on the playground, BECAUSE it's aired on TV before the watershed and therefore condoned??

TBH, I YouTubed the 'event', and it was c**p. Gwyneth looked neither appauled or disturbed, which as Consie pointed out, makes a bloody change.

Yeah, I just YouTubed it too (I shall post the vid in a second) and she just laughed along. Complete c**p  (Although obviously this goes beyond the initial event and takes other things into account, but as a report this is nonsense :P) Infact, Gwyneth suggests it.

Isn't this show on late night? Kids shouldn't be watching TV late night therefore it's the parents fault for letting their kids watching adult shows.

But lets face it, kids swear more than adults these days.

Exactly... She hardly seems offended by it at all tbh..... I think she probably would give Wossy a bloody good seeing to if Chris let her.....

Will the Sunday Express print an apology for misreporting?

Will the Sunday Express print an apology for misreporting?

They should, because it was an absolutely BLATANT distortion of what actually occurred on the show..... Ms Paltrow didn't seem the least bit offended....

The whole incident was represented in completely the wrong light, like you said. I'd say now that swearing has gone past the point of being shocking (post-watershed).
