Posted May 11, 200817 yr England is a nation of "overweight, binge drinking, reality TV addicts" who cohabit with "animal-loving, tea-drinking, charity donors," according to the new Rough Guide to England travel book. There is no other country as "fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse, yet as insular, self-important and irritating, as England," claims the guide. It also contends that the English motto should be "make tea, not war." Has the Rough Guide got the measure of the English? How would you describe the nation's people? What would be your choice of motto? Source: Sunday Telegraph
May 11, 200817 yr "make tea, not war." Obviously written by someone with American roots. The amount of times I've gone into American game servers to be asked whether I drink tea and crumpets is ridiculously funny  I've never seen anyone have crumpets with tea  We did love our tea (I don't drink the stuff), but I think it's been waning in recent years with the introduction of coffee shops galore with Costa, Starbucks and others popping up everywhere. All these 'cino drinks  seem to be replacing tea. Overweight, well yes  the statistics show it, and as for binge drinking  you just need to walk into your nearest town centre on a night to see it in full action. My motto is too rude for the public :kink:

Yes, the 'Great' British Public are self-important and irritating, but England like mentioned is a beautiful and culturally diverse country!
May 11, 200817 yr Unfortunately I'd say everything in that post is accurate. Based on stereotypes, America is notably far more accused of being overweight than Brits. And they can do about 20 series of a programme and not get bored i.e. American Idol.
May 12, 200817 yr There is no other country as "fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse, yet as insular, self-important and irritating, as England," Actually, that pretty much sums up my own feelings about England and the English tbh.... I absolutely LOVE some aspects of English culture, but a lot of it seems to be ruined by the people who try to push 'Englishness', arseholes like the BNP and the "English Democrats" who are nothing more than a bunch of bigoted pricks who spoil it for the rest of the country.... If England could get rid of its petty, narrow-minded, parochial, insular and utterly tw@ttish aspects, it would be near-perfect.....
