IRON MAIDEN went all the way then! Maiden knocked CARTER (THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE) off the top. The BLACK CROWES (American hard rockers) at 3. DEF LEPPARD (again in the chart in 2008) managed to stick in the chart for quite a while in 92. The CURE also back in 08. More rock with KISS, and GENESIS going back up the top 30. The COMMITMENTS album was also sailing up and down the chart, (This week at 21). 1992`s singles... w/k ending 23rd May 1992 01 01 PLEASE DON`T GO/GAME BOY - KWS 02 03 HANG ON IN THERE BABY - CURIOSITY 03 20 MY LOVIN`- EN VOGUE 04 NE KNOCKIN` ON HEAVEN`S DOOR - GUN`S N` ROSES 05 02 ON A RAGGA TIP - SL2 06 NE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - CELINE DION AND PEABO BRYSON 07 18 I DON`T CARE - SHAKESPEARS SISTER 08 32 EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU - UGLY KID JOE 09 10 ALWAYS THE LAST TO KNOW - DEL AMITRI 10 11 WORKAHOLIC - 2UNLIMITED 11 04 DAYS OF PEARLY SPENCER - MARC ALMOND 12 24 HAZARD - RICHARD MARX 13 05 DEEPLY DIPPY - RIGHT SAID FRED 14 09 SONG FOR LOVE - EXTREME 15 NE KEEP ON WALKIN` - CE CE PENISTON 16 06 YOU`RE ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME - CURTIS STIGERS 17 23 MISSING YOU NOW - MICHAEL BOLTON 18 33 NOW THE MAGIC HAS GONE - JOE COCKER 19 13 LOVE IS HOLY - KIM WILDE 20 38 CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR - THOMAS DOLBY 21 21 BOY FROM NEW YORK CITY - ALISON JORDAN 22 26 LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND - DON-E 23 NE 15 YEARS E.P. - LEVELLERS 24 29 JOIN OUR CLUB/PEOPLE GET REAL - ST. KWS beating the DOUBLE YOU re-working on PLEASE DON`T GO (the KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND hit from 79). GUNS N` ROSES sang BOB DYLAN. CURIOSITY dropped the KILLED THE CAT, and sang a 1974 JOHNNY BRISTOL top ten hit. MARC ALMOND sang DAVID MCWILLIAMS (a missed hit from 68). RICHARD MARX seemed to be forever on the Radio 2 playlist. We all loved 2UNLIMITED, didn`t we?! MICHAEL BALL was ONE STEP OUT of the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, and lost. Dodgy titles around for LIONEL RICHIE and also the DEGREES OF MOTION hit. SIMPLY RED must have released most of the album, "STARS", on Single! The WEDDING PRESENT were still releasing a new single every month, for the whole of 1992. SHAKESPEAR`s SISTER had problems following up, "STAY", but the album HORMONALLY YOURS kept them going. My fav SISTERS OF MERCY crashed out of the top 40, down 36 places...but I was laughing at the time (because I can`t stand Michael Jackson, and he smashed down 22 places)!! Hang on for Mr Dave Taylor, who will put up his added sales, up to the minute singles chart shortly and a quick tribute to the anniversary of the Radio One top 40. So, hang around....

Funnily enough without downloads alone, H TWO O would be 39, and PARAMORE 40 (and that one, is the top rock single this week). And Ben, you are right. Fall Out Boy (Beat It) is only available as a download (though a cd single, did emerge for some radio stations). = Is the Chart Show tv position. Down goes Madonna. Ting Tings sale 2,000 more than Rihanna (but she will take over next week, probably).Outer limits of the chart this evening (on adding today`s sales, on to the chart show chart, minus airplay) tell me that SANDI THOM is 51, TING TINGs other disqualified OCC track is at 52, VAMPIRE WEEKEND sail to 53 (after Jonathon Ross last week). PARAMORE are 55, LIL MAMA at 64, CHANELLE at 63, CASSIE at 62, DAVID JORDAN at 69, GUSTO at 68. Meanwhile QUEEN slip at 60. SNAP re-enter the top 75 with the 1992 best seller "Rythym is a Dancer". VIVA LA VIDA and COLDPLAY would be around the bottom of the top 60, but the sales of that are impossible to diagnose, i.e. the disqualification by OCC last week. Even I found it difficult last Friday, when it crept in at 37, but would have been in the top 15, if I`d included the other 4,000+ freebies. LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION the biggest loser this week, with the aptly titled "GALAXY OF THE LOST". Downloads for that were nil! Next week look out for albums from TING TINGS, BETH ROWLEY, MICK HUCKNALL, THEA GILMORE and don`t forget the CISTERCIAN MONKS (who will be a good top 20 bet)! Next week`s singles will be from GUSTO, NELLY, SERGENT K OK, ASHLEE SIMPSON, ROY WORLD, AMY MACDONALD, JUSTICE, FUTUREHEADS, and KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES. I think the MORRISEY track is not released until 26th. Don`t forget Chart Show tv, for the complete top 40 (Saturdays 3 - 6.30pm), with bubblers and new releases. Cramming in 50+ videos, in 3 and a half hours! This week, the correct chart too! Going to end with a quick tribute to Radio One`s top 40. As, last week was the 30th anniversary of the BBC using a top 40 (which had been extended, from a top 30 on Tues 9th May 1978). So, let us have a look at the longest serving hosts, of the BBC chart since it began in 1957 (actually Pick Of The Pops started in 1955, but did not include charts until October 57). Franklin Engelmann was the first host of Pick Of the Pops (he did 7 shows every two weeks between Tuesday 11th Oct 1955 - December 1955 at 9pm). The programme only featured new releases, until 1957. During 1956 - 1957, the BBC ran a programme on Sundays at 6pm, entitled "Hit Parade", this featured the top sheet music charts. The songs and music were supplied by a residential BBC orchestra. The longest serving hosts of the BBC chart 01 ALAN FREEMAN 10 Years between 1961 and 1972 (Alan was the first person, to take the chart to Sunday Afternoons from 7th January 1962. Previously Sat evenings). 02 MARK GOODIER 8.75 Years between 1992 and 2002 (Mark, currently hosts the Morning Show on Smooth Radio). 03 BRUNO BROOKES 8 Years between 1986 and 1995 04 TOM BROWNE 5.5 Years between 1972 and 1978 (Tom, now lives in Hong Kong with is much younger wife) 05 DAVID JACOBS 3.5 Years between 1958 and 1962 (David, first hosted "Pick Of The Pops", on Saturday nights at 6pm in September 56, but this was moved to 11pm) 06 JK AND JOEL 2.5 Years between 2005 - 2007 07 TONY BLACKBURN 2.25 Years between 1979 and 1982 (Tony, these days is on Smooth Radio in London, and KCFM in Hull) 08 SIMON BATES 2 Years between 1978 and 1984 (Simon, currently hosts the Breakfast Show on Classic FM) 09 TOMMY VANCE 2 Years between 1982 and 1984 (Tommy, sadily passed away a couple of years ago) 10 WES BUTTERS 2 Years between 2003 - 2005 11 RICHARD SKINNER 1.5 Years 1984 - 1986 (Richard, currently hosts a weekend show on Radio Berkshire) 12 ALAN DELL 9 Months between 1957 and 1958 (Alan Dell, first presented "Pick Of The Pops", in January 1956 and was replaced by David Jacobs in Sept 1956) 13 FERNE COTTON/REGGIE YATES 8 Months 2007 - Present 14 DON MOSS 3 Months between 1963 and 1964 (Don, maybe more known as a TV host on daytime quiz shows "Three Little Words", and "Definition", in the 70s & 80s). The top stand ins for the chart are 01 SCOTT MILLS 98 - 07 02 MARK GOODIER 88 - 95 03 SIMON BATES 76 - 92 04 TOMMY VANCE 85 - 91 05 ANDY PEEBLES 79 - 83 (Andy, currently hosts shows in the North of England for Smooth Radio) 06 CLIVE WARREN 95 - 96 (Clive (who is a freelance man) regular does Local Independant Shows on various Stations in the South of England 07 NEALE JAMES 1995 (Neale currently hosts afternoon/evening shows on Reading 107FM) 08 GARY DAVIES 87 - 88 09 DAVE PEARCE 1997 10 DON MOSS 1964 SIMON BATES first hosted the chart as a stand-in for TOM BROWNE this week, in 1976 and subsequently last hosted it, as stand in for BRUNO BROOKES in November 1992. Nemone did the chart for the first 2 weeks of 2003. Jo Wiley, Chris Moyles, Emma B, Mark Radcliffe, and Sara Cox did a week each between Nov and Dec 2002. Colin Murray/Jo Wiley, Vernon Kay/Spooney, Scott Mills/Nemone, Scott Mills/Edith Bowman all did double acts, in Feb 2005. The first female to do the chart alone, was Jo Wiley in Nov 2003. Judge Jules, also stood in for Mark Goodier for one Sunday in 1996. Between 1967 and 1987, Radio One announced the new chart on Tuesday Lunchtimes (or Wednesdays, if there was a Bank Holiday on the Monday). The presenters of that rundown were as follows: ALAN FREEMAN 1967 - 1972 TONY BLACKBURN 1972 DAVE LEE TRAVIS 1973 (Dave currently hosts a weekday show on Magic A.M. stations) JOHNNIE WALKER 1973 - 1976 (Johnnie currently on Radio 2, on a Sunday afternoon/evening PAUL BURNETT 1976 - 1982 (Paul currently hosts the Late Show, on KCFM) DAVE LEE TRAVIS 1982 MIKE SMITH 1982 - 1983 (Mike left radio, in the late 80s, and now runs his own air school) GARY DAVIES 1984 - 1987 (Gary now hosts the Album chart on Real Radio, on Sunday afternoons) Both Johnnie Walker, and Paul Burnett also stood-in for Tom Browne (for a week each, in 1973 and 1974). Paul Burnett hosted the Radio One Airplay Chart (All There Is Too Hear) on Sunday Mornings (March 74 - 76). Followed by Simon Bates from 1976 - 77. There was also a reprise of the new chart on Radio One`s Wedenesday Breakfast show 1979 - 1987. Peter Powell also reprised it in the early - mid 80s, on his Tuesday Drivetime show around 6 - 7pm, also telling us of some of the bubblers outside the top 40. Another reprise featured between 1987 - recent times on the Monday Radio One Breakfast show. Independant Radio`s chart presenters in top order of presenting are 01 NEIL FOX 1993 - 2004 (Pepsi Chart/Hit40uk) Neil now hosts the Breakfast Show on Magic FM in London 02 DAVID "KID" JENSEN 1984 - 1993 (The Network Chart) David now hosts the Morning Show on Gold 03 SIMON HIRST 2004 - 2006 HIT40UK (Simon originally co-hosted with Katy Hill, then she was dropped about 6 months after) 04 LUCIO 2006 - Present HIT40UK The top stand-ins on independant radio`s chart are ALAN FREEMAN 85 - 88, and PAT SHARP 89 - 92. Both stood in for DAVID JENSEN. TIMMY MALLET stood in for David, also in 1985. NEIL FOX had STEVE PENK as his regular stand-in between 1994 and 2003. Between April 1978 and Sept 1984, Independant Local Rado stations ran the RECORD BUSINESS/MRIB compiled chart on Sundays at various times/lengths/local presenters. It was known as either UK TOP 30, or UK TOP 40. Some Radio stations, began to use the Official Chart in the Spring of 1982 - 1984. While others, ran their own based local charts (such as the easy listening top 40). Capital Radio, ran the the UK Top 15 on Sundays 2.30 - 4pm between 82 - 84 (this had previously been a top 30). Where as (also on Capital), they relaunched "Pick Of The Pops", as Pick Of The Pops-Take Two on Saturday mornings (which featured a vintage top 15, side by side the new NME/MRIB London top 15). That, saw the return of Alan Freeman (after Capital also relaunched him, on the Monday Night Rock Show). Alan did "Pick Of The Pops-Take Two", between June 1982 and Jan 1989. Stand-in hosts for Alan then included, Nicky Horne, Roger Scott, and Paul Burnett. EMAP stations launched the Smash Hits Chart in Jan 2003 with Mark Goodier until Apr 2006, when Robin Banks took over until the show was cancelled in Oct 2006. Other stations in the same group as Heart FM, ran the A List between Feb 2006 - Dec 2007 hosted by Nick Snaith and Melanie Sykes. It has to be said that MARK GOODIER is one of the longest serving people ever, to do a Sunday chart show, because after leaving Radio One, he presented the SMASH HITS CHART on some independant radio stations between 2003 and 2006. So, he actually presented one for 12 Years altogether. Then he also did another for Real Radio, until 2007. The late, and much missed ALAN FREEMAN would be the most prevailant host of the charts, for the return at Capital Radio in the 80s, and also sitting in for DAVID JENSEN. So, altogether Alan presented a new chart for 16.5 Years, and that does not include the vintage countdowns between 1989 and 2000. All this info, from the Radio Times 1955 - 08 and my diaries, and memory! ;)
May 16, 200817 yr How convenient the #1 from 1992, Basshunter are going to cover it as their next single, also the #1 single was later a double A-sided single with 'Game Boy' a few weeks later. The top 4 singles I have. En Vogue
May 16, 200817 yr Where did you get the info from then? Basshunter has changed his next single thank God.
May 17, 200817 yr I thought Pigeon Detectives would be closer to the top 10 than that. :o They slipped officially throughout the week. With Duffy and Pendulum going above them. They started the week at 12, I think.
May 17, 200817 yr Author Here is a quick Saturday Lunchtime update from Dave. Ashlee Simpson is heading down at the moment, from last night`s number 26 position, and Fall Out Boy have switched places with Utah Saints at 40 and 39 respectively. Nelly and Alphabeat have also switched places, at 19 and 18. Other than that, not much change at the top half of the top 50.
May 17, 200817 yr thanks for the charts - much appreciated as always! While it's good to see new entries at the top end of the chart, there's still a real lack of movement elsewhere in the singles chart. I wonder if it will be this way for a while yet?
May 17, 200817 yr Funny enough in the top 40 there is only 1 new entry physically, at #1, and a download entry at 2 while the rest at the bottom of the top 40 are literally climbers, or download entries. And thanks for the additional info on the DJs this week, I enjoyed reading that. Excuse any spelling mistakes, I've got a new keyboatrd, I keep on hitting the wrong keys, don't ask why -_-

While it's good to see new entries at the top end of the chart, there's still a real lack of movement elsewhere in the singles chart. I wonder if it will be this way for a while yet? I think if the physical versions, were released at the same time as the downloads, then the chart would be more speedier. So, would include more new entries. In which case Paramore and Cassie would then, I believe be in the top 40.

It might even help the physical market as shops might be more prepared to stock them if it led to more customers wanting to buy them. Given that a physical release isn't the big thing anymore, why do labels still hold back a release for weeks? It's not as if there's a promotion campaign to undertake anymore to build up demand for a big CD release with everyone flocking to the shop on the Monday. People just go to iTunes or whatever and download the track. If the option to buy a physical single was made more attractive more people might choose this.

Dave was saying the other day that he thinks, physicals should be released on Fridays. Like they were between the 50s and mid 80s. He could have an idea, there. What do you think?
May 17, 200817 yr Absolutely Robbie. Dave was saying the other day that he thinks, physicals should be released on Fridays. Like they were between the 50s and mid 80s. He could have an idea, there. What do you think?seems like an idea. It's what one of the labels had suggested last year but was never taken up. But the important thing is for labels to get the track out on CD / vinyl asap. Given that physical singles aren't shipped out in massive amounts anymore, surely there must be the capacity for plants to press a few thousand and get them to stores for a weekend. Then demand can decide if more copies are needed pressing. But I can't see any advantage in holding back a release, the boost from a physical release isn't that much anymore, except perhaps for mega-acts where even then the physical could still be released more quickly than at present.
