Posted June 2, 200817 yr from teletext: Shirley Manson is taking up acting, after her debut solo album was shelved by Warner Records. Manson said Warner didn't want to release the album, co-written with Paul Buchanan of The Blue Nile. She will now have a regular role in the second series of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a spin-off The Terminator movies, in the US this autumn. Manson plays the boss of a computer firm This is quite sad news as I would have loved to hear how those Buchanan/Manson songs sounded - tho Warner also shelved the Associates Glamour Chase album for something like about 10 years and I guess thats probably when the next Blue Nile albums gonna be out anyway  - so I guess anyone who is a big fan of Paul Buchanan won't mind waiting and at least there is still Sharleen Spiteri's Melody album coming out which is probably in the same kinda vibe??? http://www.mdmmedia.com/mdm/pictures/gc-cover%202.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41698ZS8XYL._SL500_AA240_.jpg Hello again, Mr Mackenzie : HgQejnOWCEE Texas ft Paul Buchanan - Sleep :
June 2, 200817 yr Buchanan's a great talent... shame, as I imagine the album with Shirley would've been amazing....
June 3, 200817 yr :arrr: This is horrible news! It was a bit inevitable though after the war that ensued between Shirley and her record label, but I was really looking forward to this.
June 3, 200817 yr Hopefully Shirley will leak it onto the net..... How DARE a fukkin' record company prevent an artist from releasing their music.... B/astards...... <_< Typical of fukkin' Warners though, they are the lousy scum of the music world..... Along with Sony..... Hearing stories like this seriously makes me think it's about time ALL artists just went 100% Internet and made their music available for downloading directly to fans on their websites, screw the record companies if they're gonna deny fans the right to hear an artist's music..... I still remember the time when Smashing Pumpkins put out "Machina II - Friends and Enemies of Modern Music" on a free download when their record company refused to release it.....
June 3, 200817 yr That really, REALLY f***s me off. I mean how long have we been waiting for this album only to be told it's been canceled for no good reason? Edited June 3, 200817 yr by Amidar
June 3, 200817 yr :o i can't believe that. Shocking! I've been looking forward to that album since Absolute Garbage (can't believe that was out nearly a year ago ) They say good things come to those who wait. Apparantly none of those people work at Warners
June 3, 200817 yr BLOODY Warner. Shirley/Paul would have been absolutely AMAZING I'm sure. I can only hope the material leaks at some point?
June 3, 200817 yr Frankly, I dont really understand this whole "dispute" thing that Shirley was having with the record company... Can anyone enlighten me....? It's just bloody vindictive though, no matter what the dispute was really, completely unjustified to deny an artist getting their material out there... Like I say, I really hope Shirley just does a Smashing Pumpkins and uploads it onto the net for free, that would be the best revenge to take upon Warners and probably the only way that the fans will ever hear the material..... It's not fair on Paul Buchanan either, whatever dispute was going on was between Shirley and the record company, nowt to do with him.....
June 3, 200817 yr Shirley should release her album on the net (Radiohead did) Warner s....s anyway :puke2:

I still remember the time when Smashing Pumpkins put out "Machina II - Friends and Enemies of Modern Music" on a free download when their record company refused to release it..... The thing is that for what we know most of the album is already recorded. Shirley collaborate with a lot of quality artists for this. The list is quite impressive: Billy Corgan (Smashing Punpkins) Beck Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, etc.) Paul Buchanan (Blue Nile) Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction, Garbage) Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Beck, The Flaming Lips, Kylie Minogue, Red Hot Chili Peppers) David Arnold ( The Cardigans, Kaiser Chiefs, Massive Attack, Pulp, Natasha Bedingfield, Björk) Shirley presented the album to the executives of her record company (Warner) and they declared it to be "too noir". I actually find nothing negative in the word "noir". (and so does Shirley). However the record company meant it in a negative way. And that's their reason for not releasing the album. They simply expected Shirley to be the next Gwen Stefani and produce some teeny-bopper, cheesy, poppy record. I have personally not heard the actual record so I cannot judge the quality of the music. All I know is that if the artist is satisfied with what they have produced they should be able to release it the way they want it and NOT bend down to the greedy record company wishes.

What a bunch of sh!theads.... <_< So because Shirl doesn't do some R&B c**p or some sort of lightweight Avril or Gwen type bollocks they just shelve it and deny the fans the right to hear it.... Says everything about Warners really.... "Too noir".... Hmm, probably means it's a bit "goth" or a bit like the Portishead album, a bit too 'challenging', a bit too 'alternative', a bit too 'downbeat'....... The list of collaborators on this album sounds unbelievably impressive actually, and between them they've sold A HELL OF A LOT OF RECORDS and received rave critical reviews at various points throughout their careers, so frankly Warners' attitude just completely baffles me.... I've liked stuff by all of them and I've liked most of Shirley's work with Garbage, so this is an album I certainly would have been interested in...... This frankly just feels a hell of a lot like censorship to me...... <_<
June 3, 200817 yr Another things is, Garbage have a reasonably sized fanbase. They wouldn't have had a whole lot to lose by giving it a relatively low key release.
June 3, 200817 yr Another things is, Garbage have a reasonably sized fanbase. They wouldn't have had a whole lot to lose by giving it a relatively low key release. Garbage have racked up sales of over 12 million albums, the first two albums accounting for almost 3/4 million each.... I somehow doubt that Warners would've lost money on a Shirley Manson solo album, whether it was "noir" or not. So, it seems a rather pitiful justification.. Garbage fans would almost certainly have bought a Manson solo record.....
June 3, 200817 yr Here's a short interview Shirley did on 10th April mostly regarding her charity work. After the 3rd minute you can hear her brief comments on the situation. SyLu4DJoQg4 Edited June 3, 200817 yr by NoiseAddict

Garbage fans would almost certainly have bought a Manson solo record..... However those first two albums I dont think were put out by Warners - think they were still under Rupert Murdoch's control of the Aussie 'indie' label Mushroom Records (though I think Manson was still under contract to another American label called Radioactive who put out her Angelfish records and 'licenced' to the rest of the band/Mushroom - tho Garbage's USA releases came out on the new - at the time - Herb Albert/Jerry Moss label Almo that they set up with the millions they got for selling A&M)...so perhaps the album has been cancelled as its just gone off the sales of the last couple of garbage releases...which Warner were actually involved with (with them just getting lucky when they bought out Festival FMR/Korda Marshall's Mushroom/Infectious Records) saying that i watched the Garbage - Queer video the other day - and now i think its one of the most sexy songs ever - more sexy than Marvin Gaye!!! more sexy than Right Said Fred etc etc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETsSdunVuys
June 4, 200817 yr However those first two albums I dont think were put out by Warners - think they were still under Rupert Murdoch's control of the Aussie 'indie' label Mushroom Records (though I think Manson was still under contract to another American label called Radioactive who put out her Angelfish records and 'licenced' to the rest of the band/Mushroom - tho Garbage's USA releases came out on the new - at the time - Herb Albert/Jerry Moss label Almo that they set up with the millions they got for selling A&M)...so perhaps the album has been cancelled as its just gone off the sales of the last couple of garbage releases...which Warner were actually involved with (with them just getting lucky when they bought out Festival FMR/Korda Marshall's Mushroom/Infectious Records) Pretty irrelevant who put them out Alex, surely Warners are taking a loss by NOT releasing the album anyway, what with studio and production costs, and hiring in the collaborators... "Bleed Like Me" and the compilation haven't done badly, but, unfortunately, the band did somewhat go off the boil with "Beautiful", which just wasn't a good album... There's a good chance Shirl would've gotten a lot of those original Garbage fans back with a darker album... "Beautiful" put off a lot of people (including myself..) because it was too Poppy, too much like some crappy attempt at a Gwen Stefani-type Pop/Rock record; which, ironically, is what Warners appear to want Shirley to be, they're obviously too stupid to realise that Garbage were at their most popular (and at their creative peak IMO) when they were a bit rockier, a bit more "noir" and downbeat, stuff like "Vow", "Milk", "Queer", "Stupid Girl", etc were such fantastic songs....
June 4, 200817 yr @Grim: I never thought you like Garbage so much! :) I agree with fact their first two albums were also their best Garbage are at their best when they're dark and "noir"
June 4, 200817 yr @Grim: I never thought you like Garbage so much! :) I agree with fact their first two albums were also their best Garbage are at their best when they're dark and "noir" I was a huge fan of the first two albums, I just wasn't so keen on the Pop direction that "Beautiful" took, and considering, ironically, that their popularity waned somewhat, I reckon I'm vindicated in thinking that.... Garbage were at their best when they were an "alt-rock" band with a hint of Goth..... And I absolutely ADORE Shirley, she's got guts, integrity (which she's proven by telling Warners to go fukk themselves and refusing to dumb-down her art...) and attitude... My idea of the quintissential Diva.... Besides, I dont think that you really have to be a "fan" of Garbage as such to be morally incensed by what has happened to Shirley's solo album and the position that Warners has taken.... I'll always defend the rights of the artist to express themselves, no matter who they may be.....
June 4, 200817 yr What confuses me is what made Warner think that Shirley WAS going to be getting the pom-poms and mini-skirts out? Garbage had already experimented with pop. I personally liked the Beautiful album, but am pretty much alone on that. It was their least successful album critically and commercially, and there was an obvious attempt with the following Bleed Like Me album to move back to the rock roots. I believe Shirley herself has been quoted as saying some of the Beautiful tracks are her least favourite. Two of the four singles from the album were deliberately excluded from the hits collection last year. So given all that, why on earth were the Warner label execs sitting there expecting Gwen Stefani Mark II?
