Guardian:

ITV has confirmed today that Cheryl Cole is to replace Sharon Osbourne as one of the four judges on The X Factor.

The Girls Aloud star will join Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue on filming of the fifth series of the hit ITV1 reality show this week.

Today's appointment comes just four days after Osbourne announced she would be leaving amid reports of rows between her and Minogue and demands for more money.

However, a source close to Osbourne denied money or her relationship with the other judges were to blame, saying she had decided to leave because of the workload and wanted to focus on her American TV work.

Cole and Spice Girl Mel B had been seen as the two frontrunners for the job.

Osbourne told Chris Moyles on Radio 1 yesterday that she wanted to see Cole get the role, while it was also rumoured the singer was considered for the judge's position that eventually went to Minogue in the last series.

There had been fears that Cole's commitments with Girls Aloud, who are currently on tour, would rule her out, although it seems producers have now been able to accommodate this.

Production on the new series is due to begin on Thursday with the London auditions at the Emirates stadium and goes on until the end of the year. The show begins broadcasting in September.

Cole said: "I'm so excited to be part of such a great show and although it's scary joining a huge programme like The X Factor, it's a massive honour to be following in the footsteps of Sharon Osbourne.

"The rest of the girls have said they're right behind me, which is really important for me as it will be weird to be on the other side of the fence this time. So whilst we get started on the next album, it will be brilliant to be a judge on The X Factor."

John Kaye Cooper, the ITV controller of entertainment, added: "Cheryl is not only an amazingly successful, sassy and talented woman but through her winning Popstars: The Rivals has been through similar experiences to those hopefuls who want to take The X Factor crown."

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

This will be the end of Girls Aloud if this happens!!

Why?

Well she is obviously gonna be so busy with X Factor, how on earth is she gonna fit in Girls Aloud's new album etc??
^ Quite easily. The audition process is filmed months ahead of the show starting. She'd have at least a 3 month group. The new album won't be released until Mid 2009 anyway, I thought?
I dont think there is a release date for the new album yet. You have to keep in mind that she is likely to be on the panel next year too and possibly the year after etc. I just think that doing GA and X Factor is gonna be too much for her and she isnt going to have time to fit everything in. I may be wrong but i believe this will be it for them. As much as i really dont want it to be!
I still think she will have time for Girls Aloud!

She will only be working on a saturday after the auditions, this will leave sunday-friday free for her to record the new album. Then she finishes X factor in Dec and the album apparentley isnt released until 2009 so she will have time to promote it.

Although i wouldnt even fret, i doubt this will happen as she was rumoured to of been asked last year she was said she was unqualified to judge other people.

This is the Sun though, im not sure if i believe it or not.

In fairness, they are normally right with showbiz stories, i think i believe it!

I quite hope it's true... It will give her some extra public appeal, because I'm sure she will be great judge, and it will show her nice and rght personality to everyone.

Plus I don't see how it would stop the Girls from releasing an album by Xmas, they can still do the promotion and stuff.

Its true then! Wahoooo. Im glad she gave the new album and the girls a mention, this gives us great hope for the future of GA.

As the show reaches over 10 million people each week im sure GA are going to get more than a few mentions and this can only furthur their success so its all good!

NOOOO i don't want her to do it, of course i love cheryl and girls aloud, but this just gives her a bigger advantage of success after girls aloud compared to the others who would need this chance more than her as she will remain famous anyway :(
Infact, i think nicola would be well suited, she truthfully speaks her mind and would tell it as it is.. she needs to get the public support behind her and this would have been a great oppurtunity.
Yes! The article refers to the new album as well! :cheer:

It's funny how they say ITV has confirmed it, while there's been no official press release or announcement at all...

Wait & see I would say.

Cheryl Cole is new X Factor judge

Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole has been named as the new judge on The X Factor. The pop star will fill the gap left by long-standing judge Sharon Osbourne, who announced earlier last week she was quitting the show. Cole will join Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue on the popular ITV talent show.

Osbourne, who was a judge for four years, revealed both Cole and Spice Girl Mel B had been approached about taking her place.

Cole, 24, who shot to fame when Girls Aloud won reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals, said it was "scary" to be joining the ITV1 show. "It's a massive honour to be following in the footsteps of Sharon Osbourne," she said. "The rest of the girls have said they're right behind me, which is really important for me as it will be weird to be on the other side of the fence this time. "So whilst we get started on the next album, it will be brilliant to be a judge on The X Factor."

Osbourne, 55, who announced she was quitting on Friday, has denied she walked out because TV bosses would not meet her pay demands. She told Radio 1 on Monday: "We were negotiating and they offered me an obscene amount of money. It didn't change anything. I had to walk away when I did."

Cole is to start filming in London this week. The series returns later in the summer.
