Posted June 25, 200817 yr Coldplay pull off transatlantic chart feat Source: Music Week 11:10 | Wednesday June 25, 2008 By Ben Cardew Coldplay have become the first UK act since the Seventies to top the UK and US singles and albums charts simultaneously. The band’s fourth studio album Viva La Vida today debuts at number one on the US albums charts after selling more than 720,000 copies in America in its first week of release. The album is now in its second week at the top of the UK charts, while the track Viva La Vida tops the singles chart on both sides of the Atlantic. The last UK act to pull off this feat was Rod Stewart with single Maggie May and album Every Picture Tells A Story in 1971. The album has also topped charts in Japan, Australia, Canada, France and Germany. Coldplay played a free concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday night and will launch their North American tour with two dates at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14 and 15.

June 25, 200817 yr When was the last time an act has topped both the US AND UK Singles AND Albums Charts simultaneously? Destiny's child did with Independent Women and Survivor (album)
June 25, 200817 yr Destiny's child did with Independent Women and Survivor (album) Wasn't that 'Survivor' and Suvivor album? IW was No.1 in 2000, where as the album was a 2001 release.
June 25, 200817 yr I've commented over at musicweek.com that Coldplay haven't (as yet) achieved this feat at all except on a technicality- the US album chart released today is the chart dated 05/07/08, albeit the chart has been announced while Coldplay are at #1 on the other three charts. The UK equivalent charts for 05/07 haven't yet been compiled nor has the Hot 100. The band notched up their number ones on the Hot 100 and UK singles and album charts on the charts dated 28/06/08 but they didn't have the #1 US album. In years to come when people look to see what the #1s were on 28/06/08 and 05/07/08 they won't be seeing Coldplay at #1 on all 4 charts at the same time...
June 25, 200817 yr Destiny's child did with Independent Women and Survivor (album) No they didn't. The last act to top all 4 charts simultaneously was, I think, Beyonce with Crazy/Dangerously In Love.
June 25, 200817 yr No they didn't. The last act to top all 4 charts simultaneously was, I think, Beyonce with Crazy/Dangerously In Love. Yup - in the week ending July 12th 2003, Beyoncé had the No1 single and album in both Britain and America. I don't know about you, but I consider that v. impressive indeed.
June 25, 200817 yr Well done to Coldplay and what huge album sales in the US for a British act, can anyone please tell me which british act has the biggest selling first week sales in their first week at number one? Edited June 25, 200817 yr by suggy
