The band’s fourth studio album Viva La Vida today debuts at number one on the US albums charts after selling more than 720,000 copies in America in its first week of release. The album is now in its second week at the top of the UK charts, while the track Viva La Vida tops the singles chart on both sides of the Atlantic. The last UK act to pull off this feat was Rod Stewart with single Maggie May and album Every Picture Tells A Story in 1971. The album has also topped charts in Japan, Australia, Canada, France and Germany. Coldplay played a free concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday night and will launch their North American tour with two dates at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14 and 15.
