Madame Tussauds' museum in Berlin features Hitler

By FRANZISKA SCHEVEN – 3 hours ago

BERLIN (AP) — Madame Tussauds' has a new museum in Berlin — complete with a controversial wax Adolf Hitler hunkered down in his bunker.

The likeness of the Nazi leader, hunched over a desk in a dimly lit bunker just before he committed suicide at the end of World War II, was one of dozens unveiled Thursday at the opening of the British wax museum's latest branch.

The waxworks here are showcased in chronological and thematic order, highlighting Europe's postwar history.

"We polled people in Berlin about how they want to have the exhibition, and the majority wanted historical and cultural background to the figures," museum spokeswoman Nathalie Ruoss said.

The reviled dictator sits beneath a map of Europe on the wall, monitoring the advance of allied troops from the east and west. Deep lines upon his wax forehead mark his desperate realization of his inevitable fall.

In front of a reproduction of the Berlin wall, a waxy John F. Kennedy stands next to a video showing his famous "I am a Berliner" speech. German political bigwigs like Willy Brandt and former East German leader Erich Hoenecker are also depicted.

There are living stars, too. Visitors can cuddle with singer Robbie Williams on a sofa during a glamorous party with other wax guests like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.

Even in wax, the presence of Hitler in the capital's museum created a fuss in the German media, with critics expressing concern that including him violated the country's strict laws against reproducing Nazi symbols. But defenders argued his role in German history could not be ignored.

So visitors can touch and photograph the wax figures, except for Hitler. Two security guards and video cameras make sure nobody breaks the rule.

In a statement, the museum said Hitler's rule "stands for an important, though also appalling, turning point in the development of modern Europe" and stressed that Madame Tussauds is "nonpolitical."

Another wax Hitler stands in the original Madame Tussauds in London.

The museum, located on the busy Unter den Linden boulevard and near the capital's iconic Brandenburg Gate, opens to the public Saturday.

Somehow I don't fancy cuddling a wax Robbie :(

The Mole: The Power to get fit with Robbie

6/07/2008

Phil Taylor is ready to call on old pal Robbie Williams in his battle to fight the flab.

Arrows ace Taylor plans to hook up with the Robster and plot out a new healthy eating plan in a bid to slim down.

"I am going out to stay with Robbie in LA. He's got his own chef and eats dead healthy and I want to go in and learn to eat more healthy than I do now," The Power told the Mole, ahead of the Las Vegas Desert Classic.

And the darts ace has promised to take the former Take That singer a new board out and give him a lesson or two - which, apparently, he needs. "Is he any good? No, he's c**p!"

EMI appoints music boss with no industry experience

Dan Sabbagh

Guy Hands, chairman at EMI, has promised to step back from day-to-day management of EMI, the record company, after appointing Elio Leoni-Sceti as chief executive of its recorded music division.

The new boss, whose appointment was revealed by Times Online, has no background in the industry, having spent the past 16 years an executive with Reckitt Benckiser, the consumer products group that makes the stain remover Vanish and Nurofen, the painkiller.

Mr Hands said he would become non-executive chairman, leaving the company to return to its traditional structure of having separate chief executives for its recorded music and music publishing divisions.

Long-serving executive, Roger Faxon, heads music publishing.

By appointing a seasoned marketer, Mr Hands is demonstrating that he believes that EMI needs to focus on selling its music more effectively. The business of signing new artists and handling acts is to be handled by Nick Gatfield, a former Universal executive, who is joining to run its labels worldwide.

Mr Leoni-Sceti joins EMI as it concludes a redundancy programme in which more than 1,500 jobs will go from a business that employs 6,000.

The Italian's job will be to try and steady an operation that has been hit by threats of artist defections. The Rolling Stones are poised to leave, while Robbie Williams has been slow to record a new album, and new signings have run down to a trickle.

Among the latest senior job casualities was Jean-Francois Cecillon, EMI Music's international head, who, in a previous role running the UK business helped to sign Williams to the company's Chrysalis label.

However, there have been signs of a recent upturn, with Coldplay's new album Viva La Vida selling more than 1 million copies in its first week after a successful marketing campaign, and new American hope, Katy Perry, producing a best-selling single on her debut in her native country.

Mr Hands said: "Elio has the passion, drive and belief in the future of the music industry to realise the ambitions we all have for EMI. Having completed the organisational restructuring at the end of June and finalised our strategic work, Elio joins at the right time to shape, drive and lead EMI to become the world’s most artist-focused and consumer-friendly music company."

Leoni-Sceti said: “The potential that can be realised in this industry is massive, music consumption is growing more than ever across the world and I cannot wait to get started and to working with EMI’s artists and employees.”

Knowledge of Nurofen should really help.....

Yeah !!!! I guess he knew that EMI would have many Headaches this year....one caused by their artsists scampering at high speed out the door :P :P :P & the other caused by fans downloading all their music for free....!!!!!!!!  I think something stronger like horse-medicine may be yet required..... :P :P :P :P :P

Have a read at this. Not the actual article but the comments underneath.

Looks like Jessica Simpson's version (and I use that term loosely) of Angels is right up there in most hated cover versions

Beckhams 'track UFOs with Williams'

Thursday, July 17 2008, 20:20 BST

By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

Robbie Williams is trying to help David Beckham's sons find UFOs, the Daily Star reports.

The ex-Take That popstar, who now resides close to the Beckhams in Los Angeles, heard that Brookyln, Romeo and Cruz were fascinated by aliens and vowed to help them catch sight of one.

A source is quoted as saying: "When Robbie heard about their love of UFOs, he promised to tip David off. When the call comes, David and the boys rush into the Hollywood Hills to try to spot spooky lights."

However, Beckham's youngest son Cruz reportedly becomes bored waiting to see flying saucers.

The insider added: "After a tip from Robbie a few days ago, David took the boys to the Madeo restaurant to wait for a call saying some strange lights had been seen in the hills. But it was getting really late, and while they waited, Cruz fell asleep at the table."
