Posted July 1, 200817 yr I was reading an article in the Times about Glasgow East Constituency (where there is the up and coming by-election). This area is very close to my heart - I worked in it for almost 20 years. The article contained very few surprises and is grim reading. What did shock me though was the male life expectancy- 63 :o Read here http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/s...icle4251808.ece Anyway, that got me wondering. So I googled and found another article. This time about The Calton, another very deprived area of Glasgow. I know it's from 2006 but the facts quoted will still be accurate I expect. Look at the male life expectancy- 53 !!!!!! :o :o :o http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2006/jan...health.politics Is this Britain in 2008? I am really horrified by these figures. But how do we address this? By throwing more money at it? By totally re-vamping the benefit system to get rid of the Dependancy Culture? Re-locating the people to Iraq so they have a chance of a longer life? What? What a depressingly awful state of affairs. ( And they'll still all trot out and vote Labour on 24th July. Voting Labour at every election for the past 50 years has got them this marvellous quality of life  )
July 1, 200817 yr Author Here are the figures for the UK as a whole. Glasgow 'wins' that honour as well. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3172229.stm
July 1, 200817 yr Well if they persist in eating fish & chips, deep fried everything (including mars bars  ),what do you expect. A staple diet of pie, chips and beans. They wouldn't know a fresh vegetable if they saw one.

I would say, in general, that working class people's diets are pretty poor, usually cos they cant afford the better food... And what about Americans?? Nation of obese fatties living on Junk Food and gargantuan portions of everything...... But the whole "life expectancy" issue does seem to be a particular problem in Glasgow for some reason... It cant be just because of poor diet because lots of people have a poor diet....
July 3, 200817 yr I would thought Scotland of all places would be one of the best places to 'grow old'..

July 4, 200817 yr I would say, in general, that working class people's diets are pretty poor, usually cos they cant afford the better food... Whilst I agree with most of your post, I have an issue with that. When I shop at Uni (average budget of about £30 a week), I usually spent a couple of quid under my budget when I go for a majorly 'healthy' shop, whereas when I spend £3 on pizzas / £2 on a bag of oven chips I go over my budget every time I do a less healthy diet. It's not expensive to have a healthy diet, if you shop properly. Of course there is expensive healthy food - but there's bloody expensive fat-and-salt-packed-ready meals and all sorts of other costly junk out there aswell.

I probably should've said the Better 'Quality" food - ie, the organic or free-range as opposed to mass-produced.... You can actually get relatively 'healthy' pizzas made with better ingredients...
