July 4, 200817 yr But it's a good song...and that's why it's doing so well in the charts...THIS IS A SONG CONTEST!!! And as i mentioned...Most album tracks are'nt that great. Of course there's gonna be one or two people that love a particular album track, but the vast majority of people MIGHT no like it. That's the risk i took when choosing Fall For Anything, and it doesn't look like it's going to pay off for me this time :| :( Yes, it's a song contest, but what would something like Umbrella or Bohemian Rhapsody winning prove? Everybody already knows they're great songs! :P And the only reason I don't like your entry is because I can't stand The Script
July 4, 200817 yr Author Yes, it's a song contest, but what would something like Umbrella or Bohemian Rhapsody winning prove? Everybody already knows they're great songs! :P And the only reason I don't like your entry is because I can't stand The Script  oh how i understand you! I hate The Script band since the time when JamesP had their song We Cry (i hardly remembered the title  ) in his NF and i listened to it
July 4, 200817 yr I vote mainly for the songs but I take into account other factors... I would never give a 12 to a song that had been a huge UK No.1 single for example, no matter how good the song...I'd rather give it to a more deserving song...basically I give my ten points to the ten songs that I'd most like to win the contest, and those that I feel would make good and deserving winners. Big hits do not make good winners, no matter how good they are.
July 4, 200817 yr For the song but i take into account the if the song is famous and by a well known artist & penalise against it, for being such an obvious/lazy selection (example: picking a classic UK Top 10 hit in the last decade, or being an album track from a top selling album (i.e. If someone selected Duffy's Distant Dreamer - even though I adore the song, I'd be more likely to give higher points to songs I like less if they are from a more obscurer background). I thought the quality & variety of tracks selected in BJSC7 was brilliant. But right now I personally don't think BJSC8 looks anywhere near as inspiring. I've already selected my artist & song - but I'm wondering about changing it to something more obscurer, because so far everyone seems to be trying to play it a bit too safe with their selections IMHO to try & guarantee a final spot.
July 9, 200817 yr I go to great lengths to find a song that's new and as unknown to many, so when people get lazy and just enter an established artist and moreso a well known song, it makes me think twice about awarding points, as I don't want bias in my voting, and want the chance to discover new music which is what I like from this contest. My record speaks for itself :P Kate Voegele - Nicol - Saving Jane - ?
July 9, 200817 yr Yes, it's a song contest, but what would something like Umbrella or Bohemian Rhapsody winning prove? Everybody already knows they're great songs! :P And the only reason I don't like your entry is because I can't stand The Script  'Bo Rap' is a hideous song. I always vote number two, there have been songs I've really liked before that I've given low/no points to because it lacks any kind of imagination or individuality. It does nothing to add knowledge or to other peoples music taste. The best thing about these contests is discovering new tracks and acts, it'd be so boring if half the tracks entered had been top 10 hits! Edited July 9, 200817 yr by RabbitFurCoat
July 10, 200817 yr 'Bo Rap' is a hideous song. I always vote number two, there have been songs I've really liked before that I've given low/no points to because it lacks any kind of imagination or individuality. It does nothing to add knowledge or to other peoples music taste. The best thing about these contests is discovering new tracks and acts, it'd be so boring if half the tracks entered had been top 10 hits! agree 100%, Set You Free and Toca's Miracle are two of my all time favourite songs but they received nothing from me... I haven't benefited from them being entered, I'd rather give my points to two of the tracks that I'd discovered/renewed my love for via the contest SYF and TM don't need renewed love because I listen to them both a couple of times every week anyway throughout the year
July 21, 200816 yr As all the Finalists have voted in BJSC8 (so that revealing this wont help or harm the likelihood of Nonsuch receiving points), I will now reveal the Nonsuch method of voting used to decide who picks up the points. :o Step 1: I listen to the song and rate it out of 10. With 10 meaning that I love the song, and 1 meaning I think the song is worse than a Westlife karaoke tune. Step 2: I then take into account the following handicap points system that I have devised: Handicap points: Artist has AF on Buzzjack -1 Song was a Top 40 hit or is a new song out now getting radio/video airplay -1 Song was a Top 10 hit (or heavy airplay track) -2 Song was a Top 40 hit in America -1 Song was a Top 5 hit in America -2 An album track from a popular selling album -1 Don't know much/never heard of the artist's music before BJSC +1 I then add the two totals together, with songs on the same points getting a higher placing based on Step 1 (i.e. a song that scores 9-2 (7) Points will finish higher than a song that scores 8-1 (7) Points, etc. What do other nations think of this method?
July 21, 200816 yr interesting Rich, odd to see that you have a formula... not intentionally, but my top five points usually go to new songs that I hadn't heard before the contest and then my other five points go to songs that I had heard before but perhaps not overplayed myself, or had been overplayed by commercial radio I've always given my 12 to a song that was new to me I think apart from when somebody entered Delta and I gave that country a 12  in the early days of the contest...
July 21, 200816 yr Author :o I always vote how i feel, I simply wouldn't vote for the song that was chosen by me with the formula :o
July 21, 200816 yr I've had the same system since BJSC5 now, for the semis and final. I listen to all the songs in one go, in the order they're drawn, and then rate each between 0 - 100. THe ones with the most points in the top 10, get the equivalent 12, 10, 8-1. If there's a tie on points, I'll compare the songs in my head to see which is best, or play them both again and decide.
July 21, 200816 yr I once tried to rate each song out of 100 to work out points that way, but it didn't work because I found it hard to separate songs from different genres...
July 21, 200816 yr It can get difficult especially when the quality is so high. I was thinking of doing grades this time, A-E. With A being total stand out tracks, B, very good tracks, etc. Then ordering them up from there.
July 22, 200816 yr Interesting formula Rich! ^_^ Personally I just decide based on gut feeling, but it looks like a very good method. I may use it if I struggle to whittle down too much in the future :funky:
