right on the boundary of 'retro' but this album is made up of the 2 big genres out in 2000, dance and garage. thought this would bring a different element into 'retro' , and i like every track listed!

who do you prefer? which album? (i expect very few to be in agreement with me on this :P )

ALBUM 1 .... DANCE

1) CHICANE FT BRYAN ADAMS - DONT GIVE UP ... cant go wrong with chicane, even makes adams sound good!

2) RANK 1 - AIRWAVE .... superb ibiza track.

3) DARUDE - SANDSTORM .... distinctive dance/pop track

4) ANGELIC - ITS MY TURN .... darren tate project, good stuff

9) ZOMBIE NATION - KERNCRAFT 400 ... another distinctive pop/dance track

10) WILLIAM ORBIT - BARBERS ADAJIO FOR STRINGS ... great re-working of a classic track, but imho tiesto did a better version

11) PLANET PERFECTO - BULLET IN THE GUN ... their best track imho

12) DELERIUM FT SARAH MCCLACHLAN - SILENCE ... comercial dance/trance doesnt get any better then this, superb creshendo.

ALBUM 2 ..... UK GARAGE

1) SWEET FEMALE ATTITUDE - FLOWERS .... pleasant little pop song

2) TRUE STEPPERS - BUGGIN ... i like the melody :)

8) AZZIDO DA BASS - DOOMS NIGHT ... what an odd track! but reached #2 !!

well both genres are dance. It almost looks like trance and garage, with some exception from both (Spiller and Moby not being trance) and (Bomfunk MC's and Kandi not being garage).

I like all the songs on the album, although i'd replace Artful Dodger - Rewind which is from 1999 to MJ Cole as he had 2 great hits that year, or Lonyo, or even Luck & Neat.

Both trance and garage were my favourite genres of 2000, so its a tough battle. I have to say I prefer Trance overall though, it had more and better hits.

well i agree, they are both dance but at differing ends of the commercial spectrum, trance being based in ibiza and ukg in aya-nappa (sp?)

moby 'porcelain' often crops up on 'chilled ibiza' type albums

bombfunk mc's and kandi might not be strictly garage, true, but they have 'ukg' elements in their sound. it always happened in the past when there was a new style of music, that said style found its way into mainstream albeit watered down. possibly the biggest example of this was culture club in the early 80's, often refered to as 'new romantics' but in fact that movement was dead by the time cc got going!

i know re-rewind came out in 99, but it featured in the charts until february y2k and as its the equivelant of 'cafe del mar' to trance, i included it above other tracks i didnt like much. dont forget this is my personal take on the years scene, not a definitive one :)

yikes, Rob - that first album is pure cheese

nah m8, only about half of it!

dont forget, its a chart based album as many of the true classics i cant date.

if you could compile an album of trance classics from y2k please do :)

I would probably go for CD 1 at a push, but I'm not mad on many of the tracks to be honest. Spiller, Storm, Rank 1... proper great tracks.

Angelic... My god she could NOT sing!!! And I think Darren Tate's prodictions are usually cheddar with a coating of gloss.

I do like trance and I also love some moments in UK Garage. MJ Cole 'Sincere', Double 99 'RIP Groove', but I'm a die hard house fan.

gotta have some cheese m8...

please submit your listing :)

I prefer the Dance Album - The only track I like on the garage one is Bomfunk MCs

For anyone who doesn't remember, the name garage from the late 90s was copied from a form of music back in the 60s

60's garage was a form of psychedelic rock from the US with bands like Electric Prunes, ? & The Mysterians, The Seeds, Count 5 and more.

absolutely, the nme in the late 70's early 80's had a 'garage' chart...

however this is refered to as 'uk' garage... :)

Don't know any of these tracks, apart from Moby and Spiller. I never got this kind of music. Must be getting old :heehee:

lol.. well so am i, but tbh on reflection y2k was a good year for dance orientated music and oddly enough, ive never liked dance, but this was the year that changed that. i love trance, and like alot garage.

you are missing out my friend!... i departed from guitar based groups in this year, trance is now my favoured music and im struggling to catch up.

oh.... and my username would give you a clue as to where my liking for 'trance' might have started!

I'd say the true age of 'trance classics' was long gone by the year 2000 - the quality trance, the stuff minus the scantily clad sluts with helium voices and chipmunk vocals, the golden era was probably 93 to 95.... with the odd good track coming along in 97 and 98.

After that, it was a rapid downward spiral for me....

nah... imho the best were the instrumentals , or the instrumentals where the female vocals were nothing more then an added instrument.

cafe del mar, 1999, carte blanche, strange world, age of love, instrumentals whilst lange (drifting away), four strings (take me away), delerium (silence) plus many many more from 98-02 were the best imho

ive yet to hear any track that moves me like 1999 or carte blanche.

Can't really fault the first list - great tunes!!! Although I'd probably replace "Sandstorm" (it got flogged to death where I worked!) with Chicane's Autumn Tactics which was a bit of a flop, but every bit as good as "Don't Give Up". But there were loads of dance tunes I liked in 2000 - shame I can't think of any others at the top of my head

For the Garage list, I'd add DJ Luck & MC Neat "With A Little Bit Of Luck" (not the awful remix with a female vocal - that was dire!) and "Right Before My Eyes" - can't remember who it was by, sorry. Oh, and Monsta Boy "Sorry". I'd take out "Freestyler" - never really liked that one

My Dance classics CD of 2000 (1999 was far better, but let's give it a bash!). I'll start it just like a proper mix CD, it builds and builds and builds!...

01: MJ Cole - Sincere

Still holds as one of, if not, the greatest UK garage/soul record ever. just beautiful!

02: Afro Medusa - Pasilda

Unless you know your onions in house music, you probably won't know this but it was a big Cafe Mambo style track.

03: Johnny Corporate - Sunday Shoutin'

Another leeser-known gem that probably escaped. This wasn't a top 40 hit, but the hook is immense! The video is DEAD cool too!

04: Barbara Tucker Ft Darryl D'Bonneau - Stop Playing With My Mind

The queen of house music battles it out on one of the greatest funky house anthems ever!

05: Joey Negro Ft Taka Boom - Must Be The Music

Joey (real name Dave Lee) has the midest touch when it comes to making a big camp-tastic diva bashing freak out!

06: ATFC ft Lisa Millett - Bad Habit

And some more campy disco vocal house...

07: N'n'G - Right Before My Eyes

On to some garage. Old northern rave anthem 'Right Before My Eyes' gets a glossy garage make over.

08: Ralph Fridge - Angel

A bit of trance for good measure! And probably my fave trance track of all time! It makes me go all fuzzy!

09: SuReal - You Take My Breath Away

Cheesey yes! But Lange made some great tracks... what is he doing these days though...??

10: Matt Darey Ft Marcella Woods - Beautiful

It's what is says on the tin! Now this is how vocal trance should be done!

11: Moby - Porcelain

The closing anthem.

I loved Angelic's "Cant Keep Me Silent". Always thought it was her best single.

Out of them all, yes I would say "...Silent" was probably the most accomplished out of them all. 'It's My Turn' was just so EUGH though, and wasn't there a 3rd single that was also equally as bad?

I quite liked DT8 - Destination and - as awfully cheesey and dissposable as it was - his mix of JBN "All I Want" is another one that I secretly loved!
