find a lot of albums to go on to much into mediocracy - esp when theres like 14 or 15 tracks to sit thru and with deluxe edition it normally worse - as with added bonus content a lot of the time its obv why they are bonus tracks...

Machine Head - "The Blackening". 8 tracks... Okay, about four of them are around the 9/10 minute mark  , but MH are a band who KNOW how to write tracks of this length, like Metallica used to... You do have a bonus 9th one in Special Editions, but that's a bloody good one - an excellent cover of Metallica's "Battery".

Goldfrapp - They've only done one album beyond 10 tracks ("Supernature", 11 tracks, and the one which I like least... ), albums usually always last the 40-50 minute mark..

System of a Down rarely do an album that goes over 45 minutes, even if you get 12 tracks, usually it's all killer stuff....

The recent Nine Inch Nails free download album was the perfect length - 10 tracks, about 46 minutes of music... Funnily enough, their first album, "Pretty Hate Machine" is my favourite of theirs, and again, it's 10 tracks lasting about 45-50 mins.... I think NIN work better doing albums that last this sort of length..

I kind of see what you mean though Alex.. I think bands should be less afraid of doing shorter albums.. The recent Mindless Self Indulgence album really should have jettisoned about four or five of its 15 tracks, and just forgotten about the bonus five tracks of remixes... MSI are a great band, but "If..." just gave us too much, they're the sort of band who work far better in smaller doses because you can get bored of them after about 30 minutes or so....

LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver

Talking Heads - Remain In Light

Metallica's Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets also deserve a mention.

and what you think about deluxe editions - esp since Universal are gonna go overboard this Xmas with them

Not much really... I guess when you do something like Nine Inch Nails did with "The Downward Spiral", beefing up the sound, giving it the full-on 5.1 surround treatment then it's alright, which is what My Bloody Valentine are planning on doing with "Loveless" actually, Kevin Shields wants to put out the mix that he always wanted to do, also, the sound quality will be significantly beefed up as well, possibly to what NIN did with their recent free downloads of "The Slip" which had three different sound qualities (the one gig one was utterly amazing).... Considering how they sounded when I saw them at the Roundhouse, it will be absolutely astounding.... Yeah, I'd buy that.... But a "Deluxe Edition" with a bunch of filler tracks....? Bollocks....

I don't think the number of tracks makes any difference at all. If the Ramones debut had only 9 tracks then it'd have only lasted for about quarter of an hour.

well i think that Universal's idea of deluxe...will have to think of of one that justifies the added cash

I think you're wrong mate... The example I gave of Mindless Self Indulgence is a case in point... Their "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy" album was 30 tracks.... TOO MUCH of a good thing for me, I just cant listen to it all the way through in one go..... Then they put out "You'll Rebel To Anything", 10 tracks, lasts about 28 minutes.... BRILLIANT.... Same goes for Slayer - "Reign In Blood" - 10 tracks, 30 minutes, absolute precised, focused Metal. A classic of the genre 20 years on.... Then the record company goes and ruins it by sticking a couple of filler tracks on it and calling it a "deluxe CD edition"... Idiots..... <_<

Feeder- Pushing The Senses- Despite the dreadful "Tumble and Fall", the rest of this album flows perfectly and sound brilliant.

The Hives- "Your New Favourite Band"- UK/Ireland only compilation album, that runs for 30 mins, but still has quality over quantity.

Mike Oldfield- "Tubular Bells"- Quite a brilliant album despite only two tracks making up the whole duration of the record.

and i bet iTunes wont allow you to buy those two tracks for 79p each - just like kraftwerk's full version of autobahn and Isaac Hayes 10min+ tracks Walk On By and Phoenix from the 4 track album Hot Buttered Soul (and buying the album is more expensive on iTunes than CD in the shop!!!)
