Posted July 13, 200817 yr A nationwide youth curfew to help combat knife crime was backed by the public and senior politicians last night. In the strongest sign yet of the growing fear of violence on Britain’s streets, a Sunday Times poll reveals today that nine out of 10 parents would back legal restrictions on their children going out after dark. A report from a House of Commons committee will say this week that a national curfew on young teenagers could curb anti-social and violent behaviour. Keith Vaz, the Labour chairman of the home affairs select committee, said: “I have sympathy with the view that children should not be out after 9pm.” Last night Phil Woolas, the environment minister, admitted that the legislation targeting teen violence was failing. “There are parts of the country where for periods of time, you should be able to introduce curfews,” he said. “We need a heavy police presence and fines for parents.” A No 10 source said there were no plans for a national curfew, but added: “It is something we might consider trialling in hotspot areas.” See whole article here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/poli...icle4322650.ece
July 13, 200817 yr Absolute fukkin' nonsense... Why the hell should the MAJORITY of relatively well-behaved kids have to suffer for the MINORITY of evil little chav scum....? No, I'm sorry, this is just rubbish.. My idea of making examples of the worst offenders, sticking them in jail for 10 years (and frankly I care not ONE JOT how old they are...) if caught in possession of knives will work a damn sight better as a deterrant than tarring every teenager with the same brush... It's not as if most of these little thugs are exactly unknown to the police, community officers probably KNOW DAMN FINE who to target..... So, let them do their job and go after them.... What next I wonder, "Curfews" for adults perhaps....? <_<
July 14, 200817 yr Absolutely ridiculous idea :manson: How exactly is it going to prevent knife crime during the DAY ? the majority of knife crimes take place between 4pm-7pm I read not long ago so having a 9pm curfew is going to solve nothing :rolleyes: Exceptionally long prison sentences and more prisons built is the answer to knife crime

Philip Lawrence, for example, was killed just after school broke up for the day... That would be, what, 4pm or thereabouts....? -_- Can you say the phrases "soundbite politics" and "quick fix"....?
July 14, 200817 yr they are missing the point totally.. its parents who should be MADE top be responsible 24/7 for THEIR brats until they are 18.... if parents took their responsibilities more seriously then we wouldnt be in this mess... fortunately my 3 contributions to mankind are well behaved ....

Agreed! It's about time some parents started parenting instead of letting their kids run amok. July 16, 200817 yr Why can't we just build another 100 prisons and lock all the neds up for 40 years? I really couldn't give a toss about their human rights. And lock up their maw and paw too (although there is unlikely to be a paw. For Social Security purposes anyway...). And lock up all the middle class liberal minded soppy do-gooders while we're at it. Then we won't need curfews. -_-
