Radiohead, Adele and Estelle have been nominated for this year's Nationwide Mercury Music Prize.

British Sea Power, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Elbow and Laura Marling were also among the 12 acts shortlisted for album of the year.

Alex Turner, who made the 2006 and 2007 shortlists with Arctic Monkeys, scored his third year in a row with his Last Shadow Puppets side-project.

The list, which was announced by Lauren Laverne at Covent Garden's The Hospital, also featured surprise nominations for electro-rock project Neon Neon, London jazz group Portico Quartet and folk outfit Rachel Unthank & The Winterset.

Chair of Judges Simon Frith said: "This turns out to be a remarkably rich year for British music.

"What is most striking is the continued resilience and flexibility of the album as a way of organising music-making. It remains an unrivalled source of musical invention and imagination."

The nominations in full:

Adele - 19

British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?

Burial - Untrue

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

Estelle - Shine

Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim

Neon Neon - Stainless Style

Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea

Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

The winner will be announced live on BBC Two on Tuesday, September 9.

I think they have a really good chance of winning. There's some really strange nominations in there this year, Adele for example? Yeah... I think this is where her insider stuff and her background helps her. Would have much rather seen Duffy nominated.

William Hill odds:

The Last Shadow Puppets 5/1

Radiohead 5/1

R Plant / A Krauss 6/1

Elbow 6/1

Burial 6/1

Laura Marling 8/1

Estelle 8/1

British Sea Power 8/1

Adele 8/1

Rachel Unthank & The Winterset 10/1

Portico Quartet 10/1

Neon Neon 10/1

These are the beginning odds for the prize, no suprise really to see The Last Shadow Puppets and Radiohead as the favourites in the early stages really...

i think its a great achievement for tAlex that 3/3.

its also good to see the LSP as the favourites with 5/1 .

i hope that it will make more people to pay attention to that band and see them for 4real and not just as alex's project band.

Burial has emerged as the new favourite to win this year's Nationwide Mercury Prize, according to bookmaker William Hill.

Radiohead led the betting on the day the 12-strong shortlist was announced, the anonymous dubstep producer - who ironically was once rumoured to be Thom Yorke - has moved into the lead.

Burial has been compared to urban artist Banksy for his desire to keep his true identity secret.

"The two people we’ve seen real money for is Radiohead at 9/2 but Burial is very much the favourite at the moment at 3/1," a spokesperson for the bookies told BBC News

Yep! Fantastic choice! LSP was good enough to be nominated but it's not good enough to win it!

Will Alex keep up his record and be nominated for a fourth year with what looks like a Queens Of The Stone Age-esque Arctics album though? :o

I'd like to think so, and I think it will be to be honest. I guess it just depends really on what other albums are released next year aswell! Especially if there's loads of critics' favourites releasing material soon. But I really guess it just does depend on the quality of the album.
