Further down there is Fall Out Boy at 46. The boys at HMV could not confirm the physical release of Bob Sinclar..so he`s in the top 70 (if the physical has been released he`s top 50) definate top 70 are Das Pop, Dave Spoon, and Florence and the Machine. The only other top 100 new entry is Shayal with "Baby" The physical number one again today is Kid Rock. Looking back to last week, Trevs made a bit of a Yogi Bear (actually Boo Boo)!!! :D He mentioned Judge Dread, and the dodgy rendition of "Come Outside", but it should`ve been "Je t`aime". But he did pretty good with his maths, because the top 10 was very much spot on..until Katy Perry suddenly appeared in the 10 on Saturday morning. Actually Katy`s midweeks were amazing (had they be in the Official mids correctly). She appeared at 48 on Thursday..Friday she was 27..Saturday morning she was 8, and finally finished at 4 by the end of the day. Then today I saw the pre-orders for the Verve. They are the fast growing act on pre-orders this year..Currently if placed in a physicl pre-order chart it fits in at 4. It`s number 7 on iTunes, and it`s only Monday (and not released physically until 11th Aug). It might sneak in, above Katy Perry..well it`s number 7 on our chart today too... So, Trevs had 36 in the 40 last week on the singles..and in the albums he had 9 in the 10, 18 in the 20, and 26 in the top 30. Let us look back to the Radio Luxembourg "Next Week`s Top 30 Singles", in 1984: 01 01 Hole In My Shoe - Neil 02 03 When Doves Cry - Prince 03 02 Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood 04 21 It`s A Hard Life - Queen 05 05 What`s Love Got To Do With It - Tina Turner 06 09 Everybody`s Laughing - Galaxy 07 10 Down On The Street - Shakatak 08 04 Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood 09 13 Closest Thing To Heaven - Kane Gang 10 23 Careless Whisper - George Michael 11 08 Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper 12 27 Whatever I Do - Hazel Dean 13 12 You Think You`re A Man - Divine 14 24 On The Wings Of Love - Jeffrey Osbourne 15 06 Young At Heart - Bluebells 16 25 Tossing And Turning - Windjammer 17 18 Sunglasses - Tracey Ullman 18 19 Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol 19 ne Agadoo - Black Lace 20 20 Day Before You Came - Blancmange 21 07 Love Resurrection - Alison Moyet 22 14 Come Back - Mighty Wah 23 11 Seven Seas - Echo And The Bunnymen 24 30 Self Control - Laura Branigan 25 26 Love Songs Are Back Again - Band Of Gold 26 16 Jump For My Love - Pointer Sisters 27 15 I Won`t Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Nik Kershaw 28 ne Some Guys Have All The Luck - Rod Stewart 29 17 Sister Of Mercy - Thompson Twins 30 ne Black Stations-White Stations - M + M Neil (from the Young Ones) at Number 1 on Luxembourg..a feat not acomplished elsewhere. Pretty good chart apart from Black Lace!! Aggado was their comeback single..originally they represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979, and became one of the lowest placed acts, for the UK (with the song "Mary Anne"). 1984 was definately a good return for them, and also brought us everybodys favourite "Do The Conga".."Come On Come On Come On, And Do The Conga, The Train Across The Floor". All this inspired the "Spittin` Image", send up on "The Chicken Song", a 1986 number One! :) Blancmange covered Abba`s "Day Before You Came", and changed the line of "The latest one by Marilyn French", to "The latest one by Barbara Cartland". That of course, concerned the reading material of Abba, and Blancmange. Band Of Gold were a tribute act, paying homeage in medley form, to the likes of the Stylistics etc (rather like Star Sound did 3 years before). Another miss for Radio Luxembourg was M + M. They had a hell of a lot of airplay, but failed to make the Gallup top 40 with "Black Stations-White Stations" (they peaked at 46, on the Gallup Radio One Chart). Radio Luxembourg did not play "White Lines", by Grandmaster And Melle Mel. So, it didn`t chart with them. Altogether, that week Luxembourg got 8 in the 10, 18 in the 20, and 27 in the 30. Later in 1984, Capital Radio launched the Network Chart (which kind of quashed the Radio Luxembourg chart). No coincidence then, that the later Luxembourg chart looked very much like "The Network Top 30". Want to end with a question (I don`t know the answer, because I didn`t do much in radio, between 1979 - 96). I recently got caught up in a conversation. Someone asked me "When did singles first start to get released on Mondays?" Now, I would say it was in the late 80s. As to when I haven`t got a clue. During the 50s, 60s, and 70s, all new releases came out on a Friday. Even the demos given to radio stations, had the Friday dates stamped on them. So, Robbie or anyone..Do you know the exact week, for the Monday release????
August 4, 200816 yr What a DULL chart. The only exciting things about this week are where the Verve & Noah & The Whale will probably place. Hopefully both land top 5 (with the Verve in the top 3. :w00t: )
August 4, 200816 yr What a big year it is proving for those Various Artists Comps. too true! I would suggest that Sony BMG should resurrect the 'Hits' series, but all of the Hits go on the Now compilations...and any flops left are so insignificant that nobdoy would want them anyway
August 4, 200816 yr oh, and Bob Sinclar is definitely out physically on 2xcd singles because I saw it today in both HMV and Zavvi :D
August 4, 200816 yr Author oh, and Bob Sinclar is definitely out physically on 2xcd singles because I saw it today in both HMV and Zavvi :D Thanks for that one! When I did the physical releases check at HMV (with our buddies), it was pretty early..so maybe he had not arrived yet! It doesn`t make much difference because the pre-orders slipped week-on-week, so it won`t make the top 40, today (neither later in the week, come to that).
August 4, 200816 yr If you take all the compilations out of the album chart you are left with a poor album chart, hardly any new releases in there. The charts are looking pretty dull, well they are week after week, nothing new there.
August 7, 200816 yr Want to end with a question (I don`t know the answer, because I didn`t do much in radio, between 1979 - 96). So, Robbie or anyone..Do you know the exact week, for the Monday release????There was no set date when this happened as the norm, it was something that grew throughout the 80s. On 01/01/80 nearly all singles were released on a Thursday or more usually a Friday and by 31/12/89 it was a Monday. In between, singles began to be released on all days of the working week, not only Mondays but Tuesdays and Wednesday too. Back then singles were just released when they left the pressing factory, so a store could sell them the minute the stock arrived. The idea behind a Friday release back then was just to ensure that all stores who wanted to sell a single from day one would have the stock at the start of the following chart week (ie from the Monday), certainly by midweek at the most. But major towns and cities tended to get their stock on the Saturday though not all stores would sell the stock on the Saturday (my local HMV didn't, unless it was by a big act). The first single I can recall being held back was Going Underground by The Jam in March 1980 which was delivered to my local store on the Saturday but the assistant said they had been told by the reps to not sell the single until the Monday, as had all other stores. The result - an instant number one. But that was an exception. However labels began to use this ploy for the bigger acts and that is why by 1984 there were several high new entries / instant number ones. Gradually, release dates for most other records moved from later in the week to the middle of the week, then to a Monday or Tuesday until finally most singles were released on the Monday by the late 80s. One important factor was better distribution as the motorway network improved during the 80s, especially once the M25 had opened in 1986. Records could be released and in stores the same day, or the following day, for most parts of the UK.
