August 13, 200816 yr saw this on bbc4 last night. i remember this rather iconic, idealised idea of the good old fashioned british bobby. it was utter c**p! It was awful. Even for its time it was awful. Jack Warner was 60 when he first took on the role (on TV) in 1955 and we were expected to believe he was still a copper in his 80's when it was nearing the end in the mid 1970's. It was a shame that grot like this ran for 20 odd years when really good cops shows like Mysteries of Edgar Wallace and the brilliant Gideon's Way ran for no more than three years between them! Norma
August 14, 200816 yr I've got vague memories of it being on BBC1 on a Saturday night at the tail end of its TV run in the mid 70s. I remember I didn't care much for it. I presume it was on straight after The Generation Game, my memories of the time are Doctor Who, The Generation Game, Dixon Of Dock Green and as it was a Saturday I was allowed to stop up to watch Match Of The Day and at some stage I'm sure Parkinson was on too...
August 15, 200816 yr Sorry, but coppers like George Dixon NEVER existed, a ludicrous, romanticised notion of the "English Bobby"... They were (and probably still are to a certain extent...) more like Jack Regan, Jim Taggart or George Carter.... Speaking of "Taggart"... How the hell can that show just keep going under the same title YEARS after the bloke playing the part died FFS.....???   They never even re-cast the role, so why keep the name..? Never really understood the logic....
