Back in time now..This week in 1967, the Marine Offences Act, and the Harold Wilson Government forced all Pirate Radio Stations, off the air. It was on Monday 14th Aug 1967, at 3pm..and Radio London etc, all closed (apart from Radio Caroline, who still continued). The closing of the Pirate stations, paved the way for the BBC, and Radio One. When Radio One began, it was a carbon copy, of the Pirate Station "Radio London". It even used the same type, of jingles. If it hadn`t been for Pirate Radio, there would have been no Radio One (heaven forbid)!! ;)

So let`s take a look at the charts, for this week in 1967:

The top Albums Aug 67:

01 01 SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND - BEATLES

02 03 SOUND OF MUSIC - OST

03 02 HEADQUARTERS - MONKEES

04 04 ARE YOU EXPEIENCED - JIMI HENDRIX

05 08 BEST OF - BEACH BOYS

06 09 PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN - PINK FLOYD

07 06 FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - LONDON CAST

08 05 LIVE AT THE TALK OF THE TOWN - TOM JONES

09 07 JIGSAW - SHADOWS

10 10 DELIVER - MAMAS AND PAPAS

Only a top ten album chart in 67. The Sound Of Music, and Julie Andrews kept the cinema busy, and the chart for the rest of the year. The Beatles "A Day In The Life" was the last record played on Radio London, and of course came from "Sergeant Pepper". Headquarters featured the Monkees hit "Alternate Title" (which was originally called "Randy Scouse Git", after the "Scouse git" character in tv`s "Till Death Us Do Part"). The late Jimi Henrix, gave us many a single from the album..the Beach Boys Best Of, was like it said. Tom Jones gave us a live album. The Shadows had a couple of minor hits from "Jigsaw", as did the Mamas and Papas, featuring the late Mama Cass. The Fiddler On The Roof cast, gave us the single "If I Were A Rich Man", with Topol (also recorded by Roger Whittaker). The BBC (themselves) did not feature the album charts, until February 1969.

Here were the top singles in Aug 1967:

01 01 SAN FRANCISCO (BE SURE TO WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR) - SCOTT MCKENZIE

02 04 I`LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN - TOM JONES

03 02 ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE - BEATLES

04 03 DEATH OF A CLOWN - DAVE DAVIES

05 06 I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER - STEVIE WONDER

06 07 UP UP AND AWAY - JOHNNY MANN SINGERS

07 09 JUST LOVING YOU - ANITA HARRIS

08 05 IT MUST BE HIM - VIKKI CARR

09 20 HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT - ALAN PRICE SET

10 19 EVEN THE BAD TIMES ARE GOOD - TREMOLOES

11 08 SHE`D RATHER BE WITH ME - TURTLES

12 14 CREEQUE ALLEY - MAMAS AND PAPAS

13 10 ALTERNATE TITLE - MONKEES

14 11 SEE EMILY PLAY - PINK FLOYD

15 21 GIN HOUSE BLUES - AMEN CORNER

16 12 THERE GOES MY EVERYTHING - ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK

17 15 YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - NANCY SINATRA

18 18 TRAMP - OTIS REDDING/CARLA THOMAS

19 17 007 SHANTY TOWN - DESMOND DEKKER AND THE ACES

20 13 LET`S PRETEND - LULU

21 NE PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY - MONKEES

22 NE ITCHYCOO PARK - SMALL FACES

23 28 A BAD NIGHT - CAT STEVENS

24 16 A WHITER SHADE OF PALE - PROCUL HAREM

25 NE EXCERPT FROM A TEENAGE OPERA - KEITH WEST

26 31 TIME SELLER - SPENCER DAVIS GROUP

27 23 RESPECT - ARETHA FRANKLIN

28 NE THE DAY I MET MARIE - CLIFF RICHARD

29 NE YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON - VANILLA FUDGE

30 22 TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS AND LOVE ME - GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS

The Summer of Love, well in progress here. Scott Mckenzie got a small follow up to "San Francisco", but it was so small you`d of missed it! The Beatles were going down with more "Love". "I`ll Never Fall In Love Again", and Tom Jones was doing great (written by Lonnie Donegan). Dave Davies (brother of Ray) had his first solo success. Stevie Wonder scored his first top 3 hit. "Up Up And Away", was big for Johnny Mann Singers, but a hit in the States for the Fifth Dimension. Anita Harris did a lot of work with magician David Nixon (and actually appears on the jukebox, in my local)! The Tremoloes did great (after breaking away from Brian Poole). As did, Alan Price (away from the Animals). Vikki Carr was America`s answer to our own Petula Clark. The Turtles, and Pink Floyd got their first top 10 hits. Nancy Sinatra gave us the latest Bond theme. Andy Fairweather-Low got his first taste of success with Amen Corner. Lulu gave the States the film "To Sir With Love", alongside Sidney Potier. In Britain we favoured "Let`s Pretend", while the theme to "To Sir With Love", was on it`s "B" Side. The late Otis Redding joined forces with Carla Thomas for a classic "Tramp". Desmond Dekker gave us reggae, for the first time. Small Faces, provided the late Steve Marriot with another top 3 hit. The Monkees had 2 hits in the top 30. The Spencer Davis Group were pretty much finished chart wise. Englebert Humperdinck (formerly Gerry Dorsey) had a tro of top 3 hits in 67, and was bigger than the Beatles! Gary Brooker gave us "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", with Procol Harem (based on Air On a G String). Cat Stevens was drying up on hits. Keith West promised us a Stage performance on "Excerpt From A Teenage Opera", but it never happened (the song often referred to as "Grocer Jack"). Cliff Richard scored a no`11, with "The Day I Met Marie". Vanilla Fudge managed no`20 with the re-working of "You Keep Me Hanging On". Soul from Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight both slid to the bottom of the chart.

That was 1967. Wasn`t it rather strange that the BBC increased their top 20, to a top 30 exactly the week after the Pirate stations shut down! "Pick Of The Pops", and Alan Freeman, on the then Light Programme was increased to 90 minutes from Sunday 26th Aug 67 4.30 - 6pm, featuring the new entries in the 30 - 11 positions, the new releases, an album track, and the complete top ten (in the run up to the start of Radio 1). Even more strange when EMI, had started a chart exactly the same time as the BBC, 10 years before in 1957!

(The vintage charts tonight were compiled by EMI in 1967 equivalent to the later Record Business/MRIB Charts).

Hang on for the Latest Singles top 50 coming soon..

some good songs from that chart in 1967 even though it was before my time. You mentioned Aretha Franklin's "Respect" - sadly, the producer of that song, Jerry Wexler, died this morning. Not only was he a producer (of classics like Respect, When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge and In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett) but he was also co-owner of Atlantic Records and signed the likes of Led Zeppelin to the label.

I can't believe the Mummy is #1 in the movies over The Dark Knight

And I must get the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles

A great choice of 1967 considering a true musical legend like Jerry Wexler has died. A man who did more good for music than the Simon Cowell's & Louis Walsh's of the world could do in a 1000 lifetimes.

Aretha Franklin - Respect

^

That makes Leona Lewis sound like Leon Jackson in comparison.

Our thoughts, and memories go out to the sad passing, of Jerry Wexler. Indeed, a great talent, who will be missed.

) Position without downloads alone.

= Is the chart show tv position.

The runaway winner is Katy! The Script falling physically, but the new album pushes the song itself, back up. Will Oasis pass enough downloads, to make the top 75 by Sunday though? Outside the top 50, the Cure hit the 75. Santogold, The Music, and The Delays don`t, and the winning losers this week are Meccano - Red Light Company, and also the Ryes - How Come Loretta. The Verve have 2 songs in the top 75 as well as Love Is Noise, they have Bitter Sweet Symphony, Flo Rida strikes in the top 60 with "In The Ayer", and Ray J. with "Sexy Can I", in the top 70.

Next week look out for singles from: Fratellis, Magistrates, The Automatic, David Jordan, Cut Your Hands Off, Gabriella Cilmi, Miley Cyrus, Shapeshifters, Will I. Am, and Vampire Weekend.

Albums will come from: Monkey (really Gorillaz, Damon Albarn), Brown Stone Cherry, and compilations Mash Up Mix Old Skool, and Essential R+ B Hit Selection..how about some proper 50s/60s R + B then?!

NOTE: This chart is not the Official Chart/Milward Brown, but as regulars know, it will be similar come Sunday. It is based on the Chart Show tv`s chart, but bought up to date, with extra sales, minus airplay. The Chart Show tv top 40 sales chart is shown on Saturdays 10am-12.30pm, with the top 40 airplay chart between 4-6.30pm, and a reminder that the Chart Show itself (formerly the ITV Chart Show), featuring the latest charts, such as the Rock, Dance, Urban, Album, Singles top tens, and new releases, can be seen on Monday nights at 7pm, on Chart Show tv (Sky Channel 365). That one, pretty good if you still miss "Top Of The Pops". Well it is on at 7pm, after all! Similarly, you can see the complete Top 20 Download Chart on Mondays at 8pm, Top 20 Artist Albums on Tues at 8, Top 20 Urban Chart on Weds at 8, Top 20 Hiphop Chart on Thurs at 8pm, and The Top 20 Airplay Chart on Fridays at 8. All that sounds like an advert! Other Music channels are available. With the Hits doing Hit40uk on Saturdays at 11am, and the Official chart goes out on MTV, and VH1.

Bloc Party did better than expected. :D #13 by Sunday I predict.

And is the airplay chart you compile a precursor to Sunday's? And based on spins rather than audience I presume?

Go Audio are in but missed the top 40?

What a weird midweek run:-

Tue: 35

Wed: 38

Thu: 28

Fri: ??

Almost Sat charts: 43

Did Music Week get Thursday's position wrong? The rest all look consistent with each other.

I rather think Music Week may have made a mistake on Thursday. I was looking at a printout that suggested it should have been at 38. The number 40s were missing on the mids all week too, as Cascada was printed twice. The no`40s through the week were:

Tues Scouting For Girls

Weds Wiley

Thurs Flo Rida - Low

Fri Go: Audio

So, yep I do think there was a mistake yesterday!

The Airplay chart just doesn`t feature songs, that are not on the playlist. A similar chart used to be broadcasted on Capital Radio. My cousin was involved with it. That was based on Sales, but again did not feature songs, that were not on the playlist, e.g. the latest chart was viewed, and then the singles not playlisted were removed, and subsequently all the records below the removed songs, were moved up a place. Chart Show tv`s Airplay chart is similar. That one only covers sales, up to Wednesday evening. So, the Almost Saturday Chart is nearly 48 hours ahead, of it.

Music Week is incredibly annoying as their database has listed a song twice on numerous occasions, and everytime it lists a song twice we lose a position at the back end of the top 40 :(

Interesting that Go: Audio were #40 on the Friday mids - is this the official mids (despite what Music Week posted)? If so, why would Music Week put them @ #28?

35-38-38-40-43(almost Sats) definitely makes sense :)

I believe a sales mix up between Go: Audio, Little Jackie, and The Script (We Cry) took place, on Thursday. Go: Audo definately at 40, on Friday official mids. Wiley were 41, although through the week, Wiley went 37, 40, 41, 41..then Almost Sat, 40!
