There was no GC option at Hampden. Just seating and standing.

And I have to work that day. I won't get there till a couple of hours before so there's no way I'd have got near the front anyway.

So I thought if I was going to be miles away I may as well have a seat.

Some Irish press reports that I picked up while in Dublin..there wasn't one negative there.

ROBBIE PLEDGES FREE GIG FOR IRISH FANS AFTER HITCHES MAR OPENING SHOW

Although the reception from the crowd at Friday night's Robbie Williams gig in Croke Park was electric, the man himself was not pleased with his tour opener.

In fact, Williams was disappointed with his show that he promised to compensate his fans by returning to Dublin to play a free concert.

'I wasn't very good tonight' he told the 80,000 strong audience you guys were better than me'

Technical difficulties marred the second half of the chart topping singers' show.

During his penultimate number, Let Me Entertain You, Williams was supposed to decend on a gondola from a rig above the stage but the system failed and he was forced to rush back down on the stage on foot.

After the song, Williams explained what had happened to the huge crowd and apologised.

His pledge to host a free gig was greeted with massive applause from the already ecstatic crowd, pack in for his sale out gig.

'I'll be back before the end of the year' promised Williams.

After rumours of fake tickets and concerns that cheated fans might cause trouble, there was a large garda presence at the venue but the event passed without major incidents.

Garda were stationed in the areas surrounding the stadium and at Quinn's Bar. They were on alert for the circulation of fake tickets and, on a sunny evening the presence of alcohol.

Although most of the fans were simply enjoying a cold drink before going to see their idol perform.

No chances were being taken that those in possession of fake tickets would gain entry to the concert.

However, the heavy official presence did not dampen spirits.

Then as the opening notes of the first song soared in the Dublin sky all eyes and ears were on one man: Robbie Williams.

And when a visibly emotional Williams ended the evening with his song Angels, the crowd was already anticipating his next concert.

Free or not, they will be there. For while he may have felt the glitches spoiled the first night of his 12-date tour 80,000 people at Croker reckoned it was a winner.

Well, I was in Dublin as well and just want to share my report with you:

We arrived at Dublin Croke Park early on Friday which greeted us with a cloudless blue sky. I have to thank the Security guys for they did an amazing job and got all 80.000 fans into the stadium without pushing, running or squeezing! The organization of this gig was high above everything else I have experienced so far. We got safely into the first row, having a fantastic view towards an amazing stage. At 6 pm a strange man called Coco entered the stage and played around on his keyboard. Afterwards a band called The Beautiful South from Manchester, I think, sang for one hour and they did a really good job.

At about 8.45 pm Josie came to stand just beside us to watch the show. Smoke arose from the stage and I wondered where Rob might appear, so that I could take a pic of him. Josie, however, pointed us to watch the roundel at the end of the catwalk, and there he was, rising out of the bottom, surrounded by columns of smoke. The first song Robbie sang was Radio. After he was half through and the smoke had disappeared, he shot a glance to Josie. She smiled and reassured him by putting up her thumb. And she was right, though he seemed to be extremely nervous, he was doing a great job, going on with Rock DJ, followed by Tripping. I was very delighted that he went on with Monsoon, because I didn’t expect him to sing it at all. He had the audience in his hands all night and gave us a really good time. Between the songs he talked with his fans, telling us, that he wonders how Mick Jagger is able to perform still. “I am only 32 and he must be about 105â€.

After Make me pure, Robbie introduced an old friend of him and Jonathan Wilkes came on stage to sing Me and My Shadow together with Rob. Well, you can like that or not, but seeing them together almost made me cry. You can see the trust and the love they have been building up for each other during a live-long friendship and Robbie seemed to be relaxed and enjoying himself for the first time this night. They sang and played around like children, trying to out-match each other. This short swing-encounter was followed by a Karaoke by the audience, singing Strong together with Robbie and Johnny. Well, all I want to say to that is, that we had that before….

After Johnny had left Rob gave his tribute to Take That, singing Back for Good and No Regrets. After doing Come undone and Feel – very touchingly sung back to him by the crowds – Rob said goodbye and disappeared into the earth again.

Short time after we could hear him sing LMEY, but I couldn’t see him at first. Josie and David, who were standing next to me looked up at the sky, where the yellow arm of the stage went up about 100 feet into the air. There I could see a desperate white figure peeping down at all sides of a gondolet. When nothing happened we started to wonder what he might be up to and he climbed down the arm, disappearing again. All the time he continued singing LMEY, never mixing with the lyrics, what was a very brave thing to do – just keeping his upper lip stiff all the time. When he finally was back on stage he was really upset. He told us that the gondolet was supposed to go down to the stage but just refused to get working. He was trapped in the height and didn’t know what to do! I think he had been frightened, high up in the air, and he was disappointed, that the well planned climax of the show didn’t work out. So he invited us all to come back to a free gig in Dublin within this year. He asked David whether he can do that and David – like Josie in the beginning – put up a thumb!

Robbie closed the show with Angels and was off. I do sincerely hope that he doesn’t bother himself too much. The disappointment concerning the not working gondolet was mainly on his side. The fans never knew what was going to happen and therefore didn’t mind at all. He did an amazing show and it’s good to have him back again! Seeing Robbie Williams live on stage is always an adventure and he never fails to entertain his audience! This time he didn’t bring any dancers but had a great light show, screen show and a lot of fire! In the end man-high columns of fire came out of the catwalk and nearly burned my forearms….. After a gig of Robbie’s I always feel like – wow – can I please have this again.

Press review from Ireland.

ROBBIE WOWS CROKER ANGELS

by Enda Feeney

It is a sure sign that it's here at long last.

Although the sun was shining brightly all week, it took the arrival of the annual outdoor concert season for confirmation that the summer has finally arrived.

Four of the biggest names in showbiz - Robbie Williams, The Eagles, Guns n Roses and Metallica - are the curtain-raisers on a summer that will also see acts like Billy Joel, The Who and Fatboy Slim take to the stage across Ireland.

Yesterday, Robbie Williams - who arrived in Dublin in a Boeing private jet - was driven from his base at the Four Seasons Hotel in a blacked-out minibus. He was accompanied by a Garda escort as he arrived at Croke Park at 4pm.

Even though proceedings weren't due to start until 6pm, fans from all over Ireland and abroad began queueing outside from lunchtime.

When Robbie eventually took to the stage in front of 80,000 fans - wearing a Crombie overcoat and accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display - he launched straight into Radio before quickly following up with crowd pleasers Rock DJ and Tripping.

An onlooker said 'Robbie is a consummate entertainer.

'He had the crowd eating right out of his hand from the very start. Frankly, he probably could have come on and recited the phone book and they would have lapped it up.

'But in fairness to him, he put on a great show.'

Last night's show was the first concert in Robbie's new world tour. He is due to visit 12 other European countries as well as Australia in the coming months.

Music industry insiders say that he sells more records per capita in Ireland than in any other market.

Sorry I haven't been here lately - but you'll be pleased to know I survived Dublin!

I can't compete with Docmouse's wonderful review but I can say Robbie was amazing, despite what he thought!

I was second row, on the end of his circular stage and the view was great! He took my breath away when he appeared in front of us! He's such an incredible performer. There were so many highlights for me but I have to mention Come Undone - boy did he put his heart and soul into that one! Loved it! Him & Jonny together are great too and it obviously helps Robbie relax having Jonny up on stage with him.

Shame about LMEY as it certainly upset Robbie - glad to hear it went better in Brussels last night! Hoping the return Dublin concert does happen cos I'd love to go back!

A wonderful weekend with great company - thanks girls! :cheer: and thanks Robbie!
