THE ROB'S A GOOD'UN

LIVE REVIEW Williams wows as tour starts

By Cath Bennett

More than 78,000 fans squeezed into Croke Park to see one of the world's best showmen sing his heart out.

Ditching his usual opening Let Me Entertain You, he launched into Radio and dazzled throughout the two-hour set.

But Robbie admitted he was nervous. He told the crowd: "I was s****ing myself before I came on. There's so many of you. You'd think I'd be used to it by now."

The title of the tour was inspired by the 1977 sci-fi movie and crop circles, alien abduction and space ships all featured in the show. But it was the Robster himself who the crowd wanted to see on the giant screens - and every cheeky grin and wink was greeted with hysterical screams.

Radio was followed by Rock DJ and last year's comeback track, Trippin. Although material from Intensive Care was well received, it was the old favourites that went down best, and Millennium had the whole crowd bouncing along.

For Me And My Shadow, Robbie was joined by best pal Jonathan Wilkes, who remained on stage to duet on Strong. The encore was a blinder - Let Me Entertain You, followed by Kids, and finishing with Angels.

And Robbie, who'll be in Scotland in September, revealed that he definitely won't be joining Take That on their comeback tour.

He said: "I couldn't do the tour because I had a tremendously successful tour of my own to do. B*****ks to that, I'm doing my own stuff."

TAKE IT OFF

Kiki King, Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

WHY go on tour in the back of a battered old Transit when you can afford to do things in style?

And Robbie Williams certainly knows how to push the boat out - or, in this case, the private jet.

Here he is posing in front of his customised airbus "Private Encounters" at Luton Airport yesterday, before flying to Ireland to kick off the European leg of his Close Encounters world tour.

On the luxury 50-seater plane, Robbie and his entourage enjoyed light snacks specially prepared by the onboard chef, before touching down in Dublin for last night's triumphant gig at Croke Park.

And although Robbie and his best buddy Jonathan Wilkes intended to fly straight back to London afterwards, he still booked out every room of the nearby Jury's hotel for the night - just in case. Well, with the few extra pennies he'll be making on the tour, why not?

In all, he will fly to 12 different European countries where he's playing 39 dates in front of 2.2 million fans.

Talk about a jet-set lifestyle. Now all Robbie needs is to ditch that chavtastic blue tracksuit and get a high-flying wardrobe instead. Forget take off, Robbie, just take it off!

So great to see you had a great time Scott. :D

Just ignore the bad press, they are paid to make pathetic comments, it's their job afterall. <_<

Maybe the LMEY incident was the reson why he finished early and left out some of the songs he did in South africa

In the Irish sun their is nothing but praise for Rob.

Their is a huge pic of him on the front page with the headline "Rockin Robbie WOWS Croker"

Then their is 2 whole pages about the gig which they desribe as mindblowing :yahoo:

But they mentioned thay he did an encore of LMEY, Kids and Angels

No mention of the LMEY incident, trust the Briitsh press to just conentrate on the negitive side -_-

It is'nt on the Net anywhere cause it's Irish for some reason

I willl type it out if i get a chance

Robbie: Let me entertain you

80,000 FANS GO MAD

Pop King Robbie Williams delighted over 80,000 fans last night with a mind-blowing live show at Croke Park Dublin.

The Cheeky heart-throb belted out classic hits such as Angels, Let me entertain you Sexed Up and a string of tracks from his latest Intensive care album.

Screaming girls made their adoration of the former Take that star know as soon as he took the stage shortly after 8pm

What followed was over two hours of pop perfection as the millionaire singer launched into his lengthy repertoire of chart-topping tunes.

Three years ago, Robbie played the biggest concert of his career and the biggest ever seen in Ireland when he wowed 135,000 people in Phoenix park.

And in terms of the occasion, last night matched it.

The glorious June sunshine gave the perfect background for the one the summer’s biggest concerts – and Robbie’s first on him European tour. Die-Hard Robbie fan Jessica Connolly from Galway, said “It was his best gig so far.

“He played all the biggest and best hits and you can tell Ireland is his favourite place to play in the whole world.

“The fact that he picked Dublin as the first venue of his European tour is because he knows it will give him the confidence for the rest of the gigs.

“The atmosphere was electric.

“The weather really added to it and made for a wonderful experience.

“While most of the people there were women he’s defiantly starting to appeal more to men.â€

Mark Doyle, from Blanchardstown in Dublin, backed up those sentiments.

He said “He just gets better and better with his age.

“I was a fan in his Take That days but he has really come into his own in the last 10 years. Robbie rules!â€

Hours before Robbie was due on stage, the crows flocked to the Drumcondra venue awaiting the opening gates at 5pm.

Many ran straight to the bars, while others divided for the pitch to make sure they had the best position view of the action. And the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Robbie entrance to the delight of the crowds, young and old, who packed Croke Park last night.

The rest of the article is just about the people who live beside Croke park not getting enough tickets

There seems to be a section of empty seats in those Croke Park photos. Right at the end of the stands. This way :right:

Wonder why?

Venue owners tune in and cash out

11 June 2006 By Ian Kehoe

The GAA, the IRFU and the RDS earned almost €4 million in rent from staging five concerts in Dublin this weekend. The gigs were attended by more than 265,000 people. The three bodies took a cut of between 15 per cent and 18 per cent of gate receipts for each concert, under an agreement reached with concert promoters MCD and Aiken Promotions. They also generated significant revenue from corporate facilities and food and beverage sales.

The GAA scooped more than €1 million from Friday night’s Robbie Williams concert at Croke Park, making it one of the biggest paydays in the stadium’s history.

The exact deal between MCD and the Croke Park management company is subject to a number of variables, including the cost of insurance, cleaning and security. However, it is understood that the GAA will recoup between €1 million and €1.3 million.

The IRFU is expecting to earn between €1.5 million and €1.8 million for renting out Lansdowne Road this weekend. American band The Eagles played a sell-out gig yesterday, and are playing a second concert this evening.

The RDS, which recently reported a 46 per cent increase in profits to €1.8 million last year, hosted two concerts this weekend. Guns ’n’ Roses played last Friday, while heavy metal band Metallica take to the stage today.

Dublin - When tickets for the European leg of Robbie Williams' world tour went on sale last November, 1.6 million were snapped up on the first day - earning Williams an estimated 80 million pounds (147.5 million dollars) and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest and largest ticket sales in a single day.

Judging from the rapturous welcome that greeted Robbie at the start of his world tour this weekend, many of the 90,000 Irish fans who bought tickets that day were happy to have helped smash the record.

Amid an impressive fireworks display and thunderous applause, Williams, dressed in a black coat and red scarf, took to the stage at Dublin's Croke Park stadium Friday for the first night of his five- month world tour. Launching straight into a set that included Radio, Rock DJ and Tripping from his latest album Intensive Care, Robbie had the fans cheering wildly from the start, setting the scene for a two- hour musical extravaganza.

Many fans had waited for hours in scorching heat to see their rock hero and they were not left disappointed. The hot evening sun only helped fire their enthusiasm. Old favourites were mixed with new tracks and classics such as Millenium and No Regrets were interspersed with the newest singles, Advertising Space and Sin, Sin, Sin. As dusk fell more than a few of the estimated 90,000 fans whipped out cigarette lighters for a heartfelt version of Feel.

There may still be 14 dates  in 44 countries before the tour wraps up in Melbourne on December 17, but it seemed that the former Take That star was feeling the burn on night one. 'I don't know how Mick Jagger does this, I'm 32 and I'm knackered,' said a smiling Robbie a couple of songs into his set.

But he trooped on regardless, performing a duet with best mate and special guest Jonathon Wilkes. Not content with one record, there were efforts to set a second one for Dublin's largest Karaoke sing-a- long. With Williams and Wilkes leading proceedings from the stage tens of thousands of voices sang along to Strong. It might not have set the Guinness Book of Records hopping but it went down a storm with the elated fans in Croke Park.

A surprise track was Take That's Back for Good. While many in the audience may have been mere toddlers when the boyband were strutting their stuff, there were enough cheering fans who remembered the boyband heyday. Over ten years after his Take That departure, Robbie was quick to put to bed rumours that he was still at odds with his former band members and wished them well in their upcoming reunion tour.

As night fell he rounded up his set with Come Undone, leaving the stage to impassioned pleas for more. He did not let the fans down. Within minutes he was back, clad in a white tracksuit, for a two-song encore. A stomping version of Let Me Entertain You was followed by a tear jerking rendition of Angels, the single that kickstarted solo showbiz success for the former boy band member.

The crowd cheered, fireworks exploded. No one wanted to go home. But Robbie wasn't happy. He was twenty feet up in the air preparing to perform a stunt at the climax of Let Me Entertain You. The crowd may have been red hot, but on this particular night the electronics behind his sky-high Gondola stunt weren't.

'I've disappointed you,' he told fans. 'You've given more than I have' - judging from the audience's energy that might not have been too far from the truth.

With promises of a free concert, complete with fully functioning Gondola stunt, Robbie made his final stage exit. 'I'll be back in Dublin before the end of the year,' he shouted. Judging from the ear splitting roars of approval he won't be the only one there.
