The Saturdays - 'Up' 'Chasing Lights' [13.10.08] [27.10.08]

i dont agree, 'aiming for top ten' (which is pretty much a certainty) in this day and age is a very low target. they have had a huge amount of promotional work and hype invested in them over the last 6 months or so. they have toured with girls aloud, been on tv, radio 1 playlists, mtv regularly, ... with THAT amount of exposure they should be aiming for #1 !

itil charted and dropped, ala mcfly stylee, as ive already mentioned, theres records in the top ten now that entered the chart the same time as itil.. THAT makes itil very very average/poor. i expect 'up' will do the same thing, chart high (top 5) then within 3 weeks be down to the low teens whilst other tracks are still up there. so against the hype/promo, against the other tracks lasting longer, then the saturdays are a poor investment and are distinctly average/poor.

of course in the future they might get given better material and like you rightly point out MIGHT become big.. but atm we can only go on what has so farbeen produced, and that is very very average.

well it is quite hard for new acts to get number 1s unless its off the back of a reality show or novelty/charity records and theyve not built a big enough fan base yet to have huge singles which i know is not always the case. Also thats the beauty of difference in opinions not all people love/hate the same thing so whats average to some might be loved by others ^_^

But we're on the subject of their single.

And the argument stands for albums too.

Will Young and Boyzone are both manufactured and they're top 5 with their albums too.

Take That will sell massively too and they're pop.

true, but i wouldnt put the saturdays in the same catagory as take that (who after all are quality pop) or will young. reluctantly boyzone.

the sats though are just another girl group in a long line of girl groups to try for the big time. in real life the people i know (ok, older buggers plus younger ones) just regard them as more 'chancers'. im not being funny or owt, i seriously dont think that SO FAR they have shown that they are anything other then a one/two album wonder, theres nothing much about them, they are quite bland.

agreed :)

My point was that if he really doesn't care, why is he spending so much time arguing against them?

I'm pretty sure that's called caring.

i care about music and always have done since the beatles...lol.. the saturdays have been hyped up as the next 'big thing' and imho (and other old buggers) they arnt! i like a decent discussion and this topic has provided it. our musical heritage is the best in the world, i love the fact that we have had so many differing musical styles that have added to our culture. acts like the saturdays dont fit this pattern! im unhappy that todays youth accept this manufactured tripe (all manufactured tripe) instead of forging their own identity as we did.

That's pretty much it, a just another in a long, LONG line of similar groups who have come and gone... There's nothing remotely special about them, they aint gonna sell millions of albums because the material just isn't good enough... A few singles might do decently well, but at the end of the day, an artist or a band is judged on the albums they produce (albums are where the real money is made, singles just dont make money these days when you take into account what the average video costs to produce), because if you cant sustain an album, then as an artist, you're just not up to scratch....

Will Young, Take That and P!nk are pop acts, yes but they're NOT manufactured which imo is a lot of difference. Will Young is a rarity for reality shows and actually has the talent and the balls to have a say in the direction he takes with his music. Meanwhile Take That and P!nk right their own stuff and have full control of their music but The Saturdays just sit there and will forever be told what to do by their record company and will be dropped once the record company stop making MONEY off them! I had this argument with Rob many times about Rachel Stevens but The Saturdays are just a PRODUCT and are the kind of thing that was quite rightly killed off by reality shows and Busted and should have stayed that way! Then again imo there is a right way to do this kind of thing and Girls Aloud having Xenomania behind them, the fact they have personalites and the fact they're just interesting has made them into a good pop act and Sugababes are a more credible version of them and as I've said before I have every album from both of those acts and I just can't see what The Saturdays have that made either of them (and the Spice Girls) GOOD!

Liking those acts you'd expect me to like these lot but I just see through all this record company hype as I just don't think they're very good. There you go I said a post without any 'insults' that better? As another moderator I would like to point out that this forum is for a debate about the song and album like the title states otherwise why would we be here? I come to discuss music on here and so I express my opinion on what I like and dislike in all forums on here and tbh I've never seen people get told to 'p*** off' anywhere else.

If anyone doesn't like Arctic Monkeys or The Libertines or any of the bands that have formed with members of them they're free to do so, also if you don't like a song then express it in it's thread! People will challenge you and say why they think it's good but that's the point of a debate and the point of a forum! Just as I post this reply their video has come on TMF btw

NUTSHELL......

Just why the hell is it you young 'uns allow your musical tastes to be defined and directed by old farts like Cowell, Walsh and Co is frankly beyond me..... Sure, I had to suffer PWL when I was a teenager, but I never allowed an old c/unt like Pete Waterman to dictate MY musical tastes..... Mind you my generation was lucky, we had the likes of Rave Culture, 'Madchester', Indie, Grunge and Alternative Rock to upset the applecart and upset "outraged from Tunbridge Wells" types, hell even the GOVT was sh!tting itself over Rave.....

I feel sorry for you lot, I really do, there's truly NOTHING out there that's an alternative to this tripe..... I mean, COLDPLAY??????? ROFLMAO...... Gawd, what a choice.....

Excellent post 'Wicky.... And I agree with pretty much all of what you said here.... Indeed, why is it that I can go on just about ANY given thread on Indie Rock forum, give an honest opinion and NOT be told to "p'ss off" or that I'm some kind of "old git" for expressing an honest view....? Why is it only HERE that seems to be the problem.....? I think that it's something that should be addressed tbh.....

erm people actually like different things...........theres all kinds of music out nowadays so for you to say theres nothing is pretty stupid really

Will Young not manufactured? Where did he come from?

What he do after he came from Pop Idol? Told Simon Cowell where to go and is now on his fourth album! It was HIM who wanted the very good imo 'Switch It On' as his first single from Keep On which wasn't as commercially successful as any ballad he's released but it's what he wanted to do and good on him for doing that!

I was looking more at the 'mainstream' or what happens to be the "big thing".... The opposite of The Saturdays, one can argue, are bands like Coldplay, Athlete, The Kooks, Razorlight, My Chemical Romance etc.... Pretty bloody uninspiring bunch compared to Happy Mondays, The Prodigy, Stone Roses, The Smiths, Nirvana, etc, if you ask me.....

And, honestly, can you actually point to any grass roots, mass "youth movement" just now that's actually inspiring; or challenging the older generation the way Mod, Rocker, Punk, New Romantic, Rave or Goth did...? THAT is my point.... You're all becoming slaves to the Cowell/Walsh/Manufactured MOR consensus, and The Saturdays are almost certainly a part of this..... Frankly I find it rather depressing.... -_-

post of the day! well said :)

however.... lol... you was arguing for rachel stevens, a pop puppet product! :P ... changed you mind now? lol...

and that is the sad reality....

I know that, but he still rose to fame thanks to the show, so he was manufactured.

LOL @ this post. People taking things a bit too far? I think so. Yes we know they're manufactured but so what? Loads of popstars are out there, we like their music and obviously quite alot of other people do too as they're currently #04 in the midweeks and look set to chart higher as they still haven't peaked on iTunes.

Seriously give it a rest guys, we understand you don't like them. We have understood that for 35 pages in this thread and probably 30 pages more in the 'If This Is Love' thread. It's rather boring to read now, I'm all for debate but not when it just repeats itself over and over again. :/

Was that directed at me? Where did I say I didnt like them? I dont care if they're manufactured or not, as long as I like their music.

No it wasn't at all :P

I think you have to concede that point 'Wicky..... Will was manufactured.... But, credit to him, he sort of did a "Monkees" (manufactured '60s boy band who became famous through a TV show...), and told his paymasters to get stuffed..... Not that it quite resulted in something as mind-frazzling as "Head" , but still, at least he eventually showed some bottle.....

so the 'likers' can say the same things over and over again, but the 'antis' cant!

so much for debate!

if more threads on bj was like this bj would be a FAR more popular place! this type of thread is what makes good forums good!
