To me it is the most overused term in music history and been dumbed down to the point that it is meaningless, some of the younger members of my family use the term with songs that are in the chart or have recently been in the chart in the last couple of years "that is a classic song" is a term I have heard many a time to describe songs from the last 2 years

To me a classic is a song that is at least 20 years old and defined a genre or is the benchmark of that genre or has been consistently top of polls of fans for that particular genre over generations for example "Stairway To Heaven" with classic rock

so 'i should be so lucky' qualifies?.... mark radcliff thinks so, maybe it does epitomises that genre, so maybe it is a 'classic' pop song.

The term 'classic' is a bit of a blanket statement and many people use the term so loosely to the point of using it for current tracks.

I would say "I Should Be So Lucky" is an iconic track, but then to say something is iconic in turn would be associated with the term, 'classic'.

'Classic' is a vastly over-used word usually used to wrongly describe popular output by a 'legend'.

'Legend' is a vastly over-used word usually used in press releases to describe somebody so out of touch that a new album is called a 'comeback'.

'Comeback' - The period in a singer's career where they have been out of the public eye long enough for those who said they were washed up to forget that and start describing them as 'legends' and their early, popular material as 'classics'.

I think that sums it up.

any song that wasn't big, basically

take the smiths, for example, never having a number one

making just classics!

Well these days, something that has been overplayed/overhyped on MTV + the media. i.e. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Okay, it's a good song. But without the help from MTV + massive radio play, would it really be as big as it is?

Same goes for Robbie Williams' 'Angels', Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Two great songs. But Angels is nothing really more than your average ballad, and Bohemian Rhapsody was just something weird that worked really well.

Although something like Jacksons 'Billie Jean', to me I think that's a classic. He was always ahead of his time.

I agree the word is used very liberally to include what I would call popular songs. Lots of songs are popular, or sold loads, doesn't make then a classic.

Everyone would name different examples, lucky if two people would actually pick the same ones.

I don't think so - The Beatles music is true classic - The were always ahead of their time.

A song that if played in a club, everyone knows the words..... well the chorus in most cases (eg living on a prayer) as well as enjoying it to a degree.

Fair point, although I think the word "Anthem" would be more apt for such tracks.

I think a classic is a song that stands the test of time, retains it's popularity and is a prime example of a particular genre of music. I may be biased but I'd certainly place the likes of Jailhouse Rock and Heartbreak Hotel in there.

NEWSFLASH:

You're a moron.

i considered deleting this, but i wont, ill leave it for everyone to judge just who is the moron

Radio djs use the term alot, usually it refers to a song that is usually over 10-15 years old and gets played alot on the radio. Or a song that is often remebered by the the public. So it can cover alot of songs but generally doent include forgotten songs, or artists. I wouldnt say Kylie I should be so lucky is a classic but in years to come Cant Get you out of my head will be defined as a classic as its a song that is often played on radio and people remeber it better than her SAW hits.

so what would you class (as music of now) as a classic of the future

i guess a track thats hung about the charts for ages, one that will be remembered. but todays music aint retro! :)

i remember in the 80's (poss 1984) wnen i was into Nik Kershaw and suchlike that

my dad turned round to me and said that this stuff one day will be out of date,

(talk about spoil it for me the old git), I was only 14 then.

Yeah he was right, it did date as everything moves on. just hope i dont act like that with my kids.

later that decade when CD's took off, i did say "i do like oldies" so dont worry everything

i buy wont be a wasted purchase, nothing to worry about.

I still have all my original CD's that I bought 20 years ago (1988) and they still play perfectly

(except for the odd few made by PDO who have now gone bust)
