The OCC tell me that 2009 will see a 'British Hit Albums' Book

come out in the UK.

We will see if it has a Facts, Feats, & Statistics Section.

Apparently, the 'Virgin Book Of British Hit Singles', does not

have any such Sections. (It also only gives Weeks On Chart

for Top 40 Hits - their Top 40 Weeks only. You only get Peak

Positions for No.41 to No.75 Hits).

Oddly - if a Top 40 Hit entered the Chart below No.40, its Entry

Date is given - but that Week is not added to its Weeks on

Chart - they only get counted when it enters the Top 40.

Each No.1 Hit Single has its Weeks at No.1 given - in a Column

at the side of each page.

There are no 'Mini Biogs' of the biggest Acts, & Groups are

simply referred to as that - Groups - with no indication of whether

they are Male, Female, or Male/Female. You are told where they

come from, though.

The OCC did not tell me about the Format of the Hit Singles

Book - I was told in 2 E-mails, on Thursday - by other people.

We will see if it is all true.

I think they will come to regret this choice, if your info proves accurate.

disappointing, the old format was better than this sounds. Though one of my older editions had lots of single chart facts e.g. most no1s, top10s, best debuts etc and the last guinness one didn't have any of that as it seemed to be skewed towards albums as it was the 50th anniversary of the album chart, so more facts for both would be good!
If that is the case with the Virgin Singles book - I will not be wasting my hard earned cash buying such rubbish as I am not interested just in Top 40 but the complete chart even down to position 100.

yeah i agree- the OCC publish the top 100 now so perhaps the "official" standard should be moved from top75 to top100 to reflect this. Not as if the chart hasn't got bigger before (e.g. didn't it start at top 12 or something?!)

Although the notion of a hit still being top 40 remains (e.g. look at the chart shows) but ppl who buy this book are real fans who want a bit more than you can get as a casual radio listener IMHO

Alot of people who buy it are going to find it confusing having the dates it entered the top 75 but only showing the weeks in top 40. I would prefer to have the total weeks on chart. I cant see this book being a big success, though I may buy it as I miss having an up to date book.

The 'Hit Singles' Book should sell for £20, but Amazon.uk are selling

it for £12.

According to their write-up of it, it is full of facts, lists, & charts - but

that is not what I've been told, by someone who saw the contents in

advance. (In August).

Here is the Link to Amazon's write-up:,

If this Edition does not sell well, then there may not be a follow-up.

Although The OCC do plan an Album Chart Book in 2009.

Of course the Album Chart Book going ahead may depend

on how well the Singles Chart Book sells.

Just been wondering (even though it looks unlikely I'll ever buy this "new" edition), when did Guinness first start publishing a top 500 of all-time in their book? :).
