Couldn't you say that for any big artist though? Even Oasis, how many of their sales are intended christmas presents?

Their new album just opened with 200,000 copies and it´s not Christmas time. A GA or Sugababes album would be lucky to sell 200,000 overall if it was released outside of the Christmas period.

^^ yeh and the thing is, no offence to oasis, i like them, but their other singles will very likely do nothing. Their album campaign will more or less be over already.

And thats not a good thing, singles should go noticed because they show the public what the album can offer.

Fans are not always "collectors". Most of them would be satisfied if they already have the track on the album. Acts like GA are "trendy", they have a group of a few thousand die-hard fans who would buy any of their singles, while more credible acts like Oasis have a much bigger fanbase, but most of this fans not willing to spend their money in useless material. I can´t believe when I hear some people download a track in the week it´s released, even if they already have like 3 copies of the album (physical), downloaded the album, etc. They obviously do that just do "help" their favourite artists, which is beyond stupid: that equals giving money to someone who is probably much richer then you. I´d rather donate to the poor. I wouldn´t buy something just to collect it or to help its chart performance, I´d only buy if I think it´s a useful product for me. And I think most rock fans think like me, that´s why they won´t go buyng the 3rd or 4th single off an album they already have.

But what really matters to industry is the album sales. A hugely sucessful single will sell what??? 200 or 300k copies? Divide that by 6 or 7, and you have the equivalent in album sales: ~40-50k. Yeah, in terms of making money, a hugely sucessful single equals to a floppy album. There no comparison between an act that scores several Top 10 hits, but with albums selling between 200-400k, to an act that have just ok-ish single sales but can easily shift a million albums.

Oasis are like a McFly act with thier singles. They chart top 3, then fly down the chart's faster then a prossie's knickers.

But they have amazing album sales - and that´s what make them legendary. Without the big album sales, they could score a bazillion number 1 hits and still wouldn´t have musical recognizement. Think about Bananarama, Jason Donovan, Vengaboys, and other acts that during some time scored HIT after HIT in the singles chart - where are they now and what importance they had in music? Yet we still remember people like Depeche Mode - who never had a #1 single. I´d say musical importance is based more in albums then singles. If an act is really credible, it will inspire people to get the whole material - the album - and not just 1 or 2 tracks. Specially these days, when a "single" is 99p mp3 track you don´t even need to get out of your house to order. I know for a fact that I purchase singles from many artists I don´t consider important - just for some fun. But I only buy albums from acts that I really like. That´s why some pop acts can achieve several hitsingles, but their album sales never get out of mediocrity: they have many ocasional buyers who enjoy the track, but not so many people who are deeply interested in their music.

My sentiments exactly... People fly off the rails on this board and give GA far too much credit. People class them as the biggest girl band since spice girls and even more.

Erm they only really shift singles you only have too look at their album sales and chart run. Their albums are always released around the chrismas period. And they shift on average i would say 300k per album. Now if people think that is great then they should get a life, seriously!. god knows what there sales would be without the christmas boost!!

Their biggest album was a greatest hits, they have to go on TV shows to secure a decent amount of first week sales. I tell you what i would love to see GA release an album in a different time frame of the year... I really do think they would only shift half they do now.

I dont think their recent one has done ok by any standards tbh - Is gonna be out of the top 40 this sunday - I think they have had their day and are just releasing rubbish which sounds the same as their previous single before!!

you see i would rather have an album shift 200k first week and look good for the years end chart. Then just have a big single!

albums are what makes an artist have credible status not singles...

but then Oasis too have sold more than enough singles to not worry about future sales.. they have cemented their selfs as a band that will always be succesful... and they have become i would say the new Rolling stones of our generation they sell out massive tours, there general music sales are not as high as before, yet still they shift a million albums on average per release since their mid 90's... which is only what GA could only dream of doing.

Well thats your opinion but at the end of the day, you dont know thats what would happen.

GA's last album is still top 100 and it climbed back into the top ten when cant speak french (3rd single) was released. So i dont see why you think they need christmas releases. Their albums would sell well no matter what time of year because their album campaigns basically run through an entire year what with singles and tours and other promotion.

I hear what your saying mate and i think your a cool poster ;) and i don't want to provoke an argument here. I just think that we have to look at the facts, and from what i have seen based on their chart runs etc,.. their albums shift a good amount through the christmas period, and then they drop out of top75...

SO you can clearly conclude that their album sales are skewed.,

It's a smart move by their record label i give you that... but i just can't help but say that Girls aloud are no way as successful as people like to think on here ;) . by saying they are the biggest girl band blah blah blah NONSENSE,,

^^ but i dont understand what you are saying because a lot of acts sell a lot at first and then drop off after that. Surely thats a general pattern? (i mean you should know that, look at oasis)

But like i said, i'm talking about their last album. It was released in Nov and went top 10 and went back into the top 10 in march, thats not an act that only sells well at xmas then is it? So i dont understand what you mean you see? I mean i'm not going back to their early album chart runs because they werent what they are now back then.

GA are successful, they are in the guiness world records for being the most successful girl band in uk chart history.

Who-ever said outside of the top 10 either has a very, very bad judgement or is a GA hater.

I seriously think no.1, with the help of X Factor and the fact its a grower.

Looks like you are right!. :)

In Ireland The Promise charted at number #4. And it's number #1 at the Download Charts there!!

Well, in fact that´s a bit random... I wouldn´t say they are a 5th of what the Spice Girls were. Obviously, they are collecting much more hits because they release a new album every year. Comparing GA to Spice Girls would be like comparing James Blunt to Elton John.

Sucess cannot be measured in QUANTITY of items charted, cause that´d be the only way GA would be among the biggest. Most real artists take some time between albums because they have to prepare it. GA just releases a new album every year no matter what, they rush the hell out of it just to cash in the Christmas market.

And really, to talk about sucess, I think they would need to sell 1 million singles to make up for the amount of sucess that 150,000 albums represent. I´m sure that if they had a million selling album they wouldn´t be able to score so many Top 10 hits, cause it´s much harder to put a song in Top 10 when everyone already has the album. GA sell an average 300,000 albums which makes it a lot easier to achieve a top 10 hit even with the 4th single off an album. But i´m sure for the record label and the music industry, it would be much more significant to have a million selling albums then dozens of top 10 hits, which combined would sell 1 million in the end, specially considering 1 million singles makes less money then 150,000 albums.

No they don't - All of their albums have sold over 300,000 - Their average worked out between their five albums is about 500,000

But GA are a success because they managed to stay together longer :P

Cause they actually get on and like each other which is something the spice girls never had

Raed the first couple of pages on this thread, its quite amusing :D

Not really, you have to remember that on the first few pages they were going to be up against Leona, Dido, Beyoncé, Christina etc. so most of us thought they'd get stuck behind at least one or two of them. If this was done closer to the time I expect there'd be a lot more people saying #1 as there isn't that much competition this week.

Number 3. Those saying it'll be their first #1 in a while will be sadly mistaken...

This is my favorite qoute on this whole thread :w00t:

But they were never going to be up against Beyonce or Christina??

Oh yeah, I forgot that Dido and Leona were pushed back and Girls Aloud were brought forward. Anyway, people were saying they would be against Dido and Leona, which is why most people said top 3.

This is my favorite qoute on this whole thread :w00t:

Again, look at the date. -_- I don't think anyone expected them to beat Leona or Dido so why would it be so stupid to say they wouldn't make #1? I just don't get why you're using opinions from when the schedule was different and acting smug about it.

Not acting smug, just stating facts and i find it quite funny how people were saying how poor the song was and are dissapointed and are the same people who are now praising it coz its doing well. Not too disimillar as Call The Shots
