think hes a marmite .... you either love him or hate him. in the 70's this person rode high on the 'philly' sound which he was largely responsible for. allegedly more people have been conceived to one of his songs then any other.... personally i think thats utter c**p.

known as the 'love walrus' .... he had a string of 'lerve' songs..

what do you think? was he adonis personified? or a great pile of sh1t? was his music classic love songs or sleazy creepy pervy rubbish?... (i think you can probably guess what I think! ;) )

Well I liked him and 'First, Last, My Everything' would be in my top 30 tunes of all time.

I think we can guess that you hate him! But as you like disagreeing with me on everything, now that I've said you hate him you'll probably come back with 'I think he's great'!

Barry White, saved my life

And if Barry White, saved your life

Or got you back with your ex-wife

Sing Barry White, Barry White, it's alright.

Now I was watching Banachek

My mind's eye

right back when i was a seed

and learning 'bout life

At night they came together and gave me sight

He said it's better doing this, than sucking on a pipe

Now when she came over, she brought the discus

On and on, she promised to kick this

EWF, stole my breath

When he finished, there was nothing left

wouldnt say hes the vilest lump o shyte ever to grace the charts - vocally he's not in the same league as Isaac Hayes (rip)..far too nazally..when he should be much deeper tonelly..but his productions - some great orchestral disco there (even tho i suppose it can get tiring when your mum's got smooth on and You're the First, the Last, My Everything' comes on the 92 time that day....tho i suppose it could be worse it could be lisa standsfield  (wonder if she'll get any tracks on the ztt boxset  )

You See the Trouble With Me - Black Legend

His best single was probably "You See The Trouble With Me" though I must admit to owning one of his singles - the insipid "Just The Way You Are" which I bought for the B side "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness" which I loved back then but never saw a release in its own right in the UK despite being a single just about everywhere else.

Your Sweetness Is My Weakness - all 8 mins 12 seconds of it!

I had the 12" version on -predictably - white vinyl...

but yeah, on the whole, his records were pretty boring. A bit of a one trick pony, half the time he sounded like he wasn't even trying but merely growling over what was admittedly good music.

The improbably named Lester Bangs, of 1970s NME fame, once wrote a review of one of Barry White's concerts and declared it the best gig he'd ever attended!

Mini Biography

Barry White first made his mark in the music business in the 1960s as a session musician, even serving for a spell as an A&R man for a small, independent Los Angeles record label. He first hit it big in 1973 with a series of albums and singles emphasizing lush orchestrations and elaborate production values, over which he laid down his big baritone voice. In 1973 and 1974 alone, he sold $16 million worth of records, not only his own but also as conductor of instrumental records (as The Love Unlimited Orchestra) and as producer of a string of albums and singles by the female vocal trio Love Unlimited (one of whom, Glodean White, was his second wife). His peak year, 1974, saw him compose the score for Together Brothers (1974) and act in Coonskin (1975). After a particularly pronounced fallow period in the 1980s, he rebounded in the 1990s with a series of critically and commercially acclaimed records and beefed up his presence on TV somewhat, with a famous guest shot on "The Simpsons" (1989) and a series of commercials in which he parodied his image and persona.

.... this is what i dont get, surely he is one of the most un-sexy, repulsive men ever in music history..

Yer just jealous because he was obviously a babe-magnet!

Never did anything for me. Just saw him as a forerunner of all that insipid soul from the 80s like Luther Vandross and Alexander O'Neal.

I will not stand for that ... Luther Vandross and Alexander O'Neal are not worthy of being in the same sentence as Barry White. And whatever descriptive anyone chooses to put to White, insipid is surely not one of them.

Seriously I only like about five songs of White's and FLME is still one of the best songs to dance to. Forget Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive .... White's song was the one that used to make me put my Southern Comfort and Lemonade down and 'get up on the dance floor'!

Norma

Never was a big fan of his tbh, although I could just about bear "You see the trouble with me". Most of his songs stuck to the same formulae, he rarely varied his singing style. But to me he is slightly better than todays R & b rubbish or Hip/Hop rap, but only just.

I remember as a 10 year old hearing "Im gonna love you just a little more babe" for the 1st time on radio Luxembourg (Fab 208).

His deep voice at the start used to make me think he was a scary monster !!!

Most of his music sounded the same to me but I loved Love Theme,Your the first the last ,Let the music play ,You see the trouble & Cant get enough of your love.

i cant stand luther or o'neal, but i still prefer them to white!

seems like im alone in my hatred of the guy... though im sure grimly wouldnt have owt nice to say about him! , maybe russt or tip might also find this slug of a man utterly repugnant.

bri.... gimmie todays black music ANYDAY over 70's black music... sweet soul and philly is IMHO the worst music ever.

well excepting O'Neal for a moment - if it was a contest between the 1980s and the 1970s with Vandross for the 80s and White for the 70s...think the 1980s would lose...no contest between the two...

dont know all of Alexander O'Neal's records..but at least with Fake and Criticize there are a couple of good Jam & Lewis funk-pop songs...however maybe it would be better not to bring up his last album where he covers Take That, Richard Marx and Barry White...as that is just gonna be one of those vomit-awful records aimed at clueless housewives in tesco....tho if you must watch O'Neal do Barry White..here is your chance now (tho obv the videos that follow it are better  )

Alexander o'neal on Alan Titchmarsh Show includes cover of Barry White your my first, my last, my everything

Galveston....I wonder if he has ever sung this record then

Glen Campbell - Galveston

OMD - Tesla Girls

it would be even funnier and ironic if had covered Jimmy Webb's Galveston to a sample of OMD's Tesla Girls (tbh i think it would be very easy to sing Galveston over the top)

are you sure this is not just a p***-take (tbh some of this information is funnier than what Chevy Chase has come up with on SNL -Chevy Chase he's the 1970s Will Ferrell - and after seeing Will's last film...think that be true  )

IMDb isn't as easy to stick any old porkies onto (unlike Wikipedia). If you want to have access to update information on artists ... you have to give credit card details (even though you may not necessarily be charged) ... so you are unlikely to get people upgrading to this registration. On Wiki - any old Tom, Dick or Harry can register and write what the hell they like on it. Hence someone recently updating Gary Barlow's page to say he worshipped the Dalhi Lama (sp) and gained divine enlightenment and Robbie Williams' page to say under 'instruments played' - piano, keyboards, bongos, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, xylophone, amongst others. When I'm sure the reality is Gary worships Twix bars and Robbie is scarcely proficient on the Stylophone!

Got to say, Barry White himself, did nothing for me but I liked You See The Trouble, Let The Music Play and You're The First, The Last, My Everything.
