I can't believe that awful Mel B song was number 1 on my 10th birthday <_< Robbie at number 2 would have been much more deserved, even T-Spoon wasn't bad!

I've always found 1998 to be a bit of a meh year compared to the two either side, a couple of classics but nothing spectacular. The ones I liked at the time included Stardust, Steps, Five, and the Beautiful South, and there's some good ones from Faithless, Nalin & Kane and Lutricia McNeal too.

I'll agree. 1998 was by far and away the worse year of this decade. Let's see...

eh?.... scotty LIKES faithless and stardust..

I've made my feelings on the period 1997 - 2000 pretty well known on here before!

Here's my handpicks from the chart - stuff I'd happily listen to right now...

25 The Divine Comedy - Generation Sex

28 Ash - Jesus Says

33 PJ Harvey - A Perfect Day Elise

...and I wouldn't want to own any of them. It really was a terrible time for music and it was around now that music TV really started to take off in the UK leading to round the clock play for payola, further marginalisation of the indie labels, half-baked gash like that Mel B single at number one and Robbie Williams being allowed to, nay applauded for sampling John Barry.

What an absolute piece of c**p this year was, these are the only ones I can tolerate

6 The Beautiful South - Perfect 10

12 Savage Garden - To The Moon And Back

19 Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

28 Ash - Jesus Says

I like:

2 Robbie Williams - Millennium

6 The Beautiful South - Perfect 10

10 Steps - One For Sorrow

19 Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

22 Faithless - God Is A DJ

24 Sash! featuring Tina Cousins - Mysterious Times

29 Brandy & Monica - The Boy Is Mine

40 Republica - From Rush Hour With Love

1 Melanie B featuring Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott - I Want You Back  ---- This summed up her lack of talent. Worse was to come from her.....

2 Robbie Williams - Millennium - I like this one ;)

3 T-Spoon - Sex On The Beach - :puke2: ---- God that song was so annoying

4 B*Witched - Rollercoaster :cheer: --- A cheery little pop song - Whatever happened to these girls?

5 Jennifer Paige - Crush  - Cool song. Will always be known as a one-hit wonder.

6 The Beautiful South - Perfect 10 :) - This is OK

7 Boyzone - No Matter What :puke2: - NOOOOOOOO

8 The Honeyz - Finally Found :cheer: - I love this song. A very talented trio of girls and such a beautiful song.

9 Aerosmith - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing :puke2: - overplayed tripe

10 Steps - One For Sorrow - :P It's cheesy but it is a well written pop song.

SELECTED FAVOURITES FROM THE TOP 40:

11 Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing) - Whatever happened to her? She had a fantastic voice and this song was so funky.

19 Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next :)

20 Sweetbox - Everything's Gonna Be Alright  --- one of the best one-hit wonders.

24 Sash! featuring Tina Cousins - Mysterious Times :yahoo: :cheer:

25 The Divine Comedy - Generation Sex - Eccentric song, but this was hilarious. He had a whitty way with lyrics :)

30 Alda - Real Good Time - I adored this song as a 14 yr old ;) Still cool today

No way - its not only got God Is A DJ in the list but one of the best records ever made....stardust - the music sounds better with you!!! and if this is too modern for mushy here is Chaka Khan and Fate.....

Stardust is the best track on that list, although it has been overplayed to death. It ended up in the top 10 best selling singles of that year if I remember rightly. Also a very influential track aswell, every other house record that followed in 1999 ripped it off most notably, Phatts & Small.

"God Is A DJ" is a decent track, but I think they've made better.

Can't beat "Beachball" either. It was the Tall Paul mix that catapulted this into the charts, but I think the original still remains the best.

Oh yeah, that Chaka Khan track is great. Chaka is the don!

and nobody has yet mentioned this under-rated powerpop act being in the chart...and i hope it doesn't take another McFly #1 to make people notice again

Silver Sun - I'll See You Around

Silver Sun - Golden Skin

Silver Sun Last Day

Each of those years had considerably higher quality on average.
