March 14, 201114 yr Plus Kate's albums are incredibly patchy apart from Hounds of Love. Tori has managed at least three albums that are mostly wall to wall greatness.
March 14, 201114 yr I'm utterly gobsmacked that anyone in public can honestly, hand on heart, say that they prefer Tori Aimless over Kate Bush. Why? They are two entirely different musicians whose voices happen to sound similar. I absolutely love both and am not worthy to decree who is better or otherwise. I have said Tori is the greatest but that's just a personal hunch. I still feel, for example, Hounds Of Love is my favourite album of Kate's and that it's still beautiful after all these years. I picked up on the "Aimless" jibe, I think that's a cheap shot, really. Tori has proven her worth even though I would agree a lot of her covers I do not like and wish she'd never bothered. @tonyttt31, I liked some of your choices, "Here In My Head" is likely my best Tori song, that time she did it on Jools Holland Later was very special, I love Sister Janet also, first time I heard that was on the CD Single along with Home On The Range (think it might have been Cornflake).
March 14, 201114 yr Aimless has made one decent album - Little Earthquakes. 'Precious Things' is incredible. However, her turgid ditties about rape, abuse, blah blah bloody blah... it's like 6th form poetry for beginners. I find her absolutely toe-curlingly bad after Little Earthquakes'... deliberately, laughably obtuse... and just a bit.... sad and desperate (I seriously hate how she sits astride her piano stool in gigs and tells 'kooky' stories about her 'kooky' life. It's like Cyndi Lauper goes serious). This paragraph suggests to me that you haven't really listened to anything after Under The Pink... the lyrics really aren't that obtuse, songs like 1000 Oceans are really rather direct for instance - certainly nothing as bad as songs such as Pi or Mrs Bartolozzi. As Tony says, your personal dislike of her and her music seems to cloud your judgement as to whether there is any talent there or not.

As Tony says, your personal dislike of her and her music seems to cloud your judgement as to whether there is any talent there or not. I find it amusing when people love to criticize things they can't grasp. I would agree "1,000 Oceans" is pretty direct and also a haunting ballad. Even true Tori fans will stand up and say there are many bad songs (especially many of the cover versions) but anyone who just takes a personal dislike to someone and so discredits their entire catalogue, oh AND uses the cheap "aimless" jibe isn't worth debating with.
March 14, 201114 yr right, going through Kate's albums - apart from Hounds of Love - I like maybe 3 or 4 tracks on each of them. Going through Tori's I'd say it's 8 to 10 of her 90s albums (apart from Venus) plus Scarlet's Walk - which is much superior to Aeriel. The last three albums have been very bland.
March 15, 201114 yr You know, I found "Aeriel" a disappointment, IMO there are just one or two good songs on it, WHEREAS, I like absolutely everything on HOUNDS OF LOVE and rate it as a masterpiece, one of the finest albums ever! In Tori's case I'd say Pink and Boys and Scarlett's Walk are my faves although The Beekeeper is fine, just songs about orange knickers leave me a little skeptical, each to their own but on balance if it comes to discussing who made the better studio albums I'd vote Tori all day long.
March 15, 201114 yr Under the Pink is just amazing. I dont think it's much like Like Little Earthquakes as the songs are more abstract and it takes weeks of listening to some of them before the hooks come out. I rate Under the Pink as being better than Hounds of Love as it successfully got expressionist piano to sell to a rock audience.

I rate Under the Pink as being better than Hounds of Love as it successfully got expressionist piano to sell to a rock audience. Whatever you want to believe. I listened to Under The Pink the other day and there seriously is no contest between HoL and that banal overwrought drivel. Absolutely ludicrous. And what HoL didn't get mainstream listeners to listen to a suite of experimental pop about a horror of water dreamscape (The Ninth Wave) that broke far more boundaries than Under The Pink.
March 15, 201114 yr I didn't word that last statement very well. I retract it. I enjoy Under the Pink more than Hounds of Love - which in fairness has only one 10/10 track and that is Waking the Witch. The rest are all 8s and 9s. Under the Pink has 7 10/10s for me. There is certainly a contest with me as both are in my Top 10 albums ever.
March 15, 201114 yr I've heard every single Tori album - and to say they're not a patchy as you think Kate Bush's apparently are - seriously?! Her last few albums have been, at best, Godawful. However, I absolutely agree that 1000 Oceans is probably her finest track since Little Earthquakes. One of my major critiscisms of Tori is that she seems to have zero quality control - there was a period where she appeared to release anything and everything, abums at an alarming rate, each diminishing in quality and returns. I also agree that some of Aerial and most of Red Shoes is absolutely terrible - once an artists starts singing love songs to their children you know you're in serious, serious trouble. However, can you honestly say Tori Amos has released anything as groundbreaking, out-there and ownright jaw-droppingly brilliant as The Dreaming? Hounds of Love? Even, bar one or two dodgy tracks, Never For Ever?
March 15, 201114 yr I stated that Tori's 90s albums are not as patchy as any of Kate's albums - the exceptions being Hounds of Love (very consistant) and Tori's Venus (very patchy). I agree than none of Tori's album are as groundbreaking as The Dreaming or Hounds of Love but that doesn't mean I should enjoy them more as a matter of consequence. I dont. The Dreaming has some amazing music on it but I only like 4 tracks on it.
March 15, 201114 yr I love To Venus And Back, genuinely my favourite Tori album at times. :o (it often switches places with Under The Pink and Choirgirl) Oh and there would be no debate from anyone that her last 3 albums have been almost entirely dreadful.
March 15, 201114 yr ...and there would be no debate from anyone that her last 3 albums have been almost entirely dreadful. Definitely! I wanted also to enhance the point made about "The Ninth Wave" which was a whole concept of it's own, "And Dream Of Sheep" is marvellous, really!
March 23, 201114 yr Ok, I have re-jigged Under the Pink and made some changes I now have it as Pretty Good Year Honey Sister Janet Past the Mission Baker Baker The Wrong Band Over It Cornflake Girl Icicle Cloud on My Tongue Space Dog Yes, Anastasia It's now flawless No 'God' :( IMO the best single from that album, equal with Cornflake Girl (and I think CG goes on a bit much at the end). Under The Pink is fantastic, though. Favourites: Pretty Good Year, God, Wrong Band, Waitress, Cornflake Girl, and the sublime 'Yes, Anastasia' Don't want to get embroiled in a Bush vs. Amos row - however - I maintain 'Hounds Of Love' is NOT the best Bush LP. Of the ones I have heard (so not TSW and TRS), Hounds Of Love would be equal bottom with Aerial. Kick Inside is the best by far, with Never for Ever second. Lionheart I think is good, just needs some polish. Tori - only heard Under The Pink, Little Earthquakes, and Choirgirl. UTP>Choirgirl>LE, easily. Under The Pink and The Kick Inside are similar yet opposite IMO - Kate's is a young woman's view of things whereas Tori was over 30 when the album was released. Sort of discovering the world vs. being world-weary (that doesn't put it very well but that's the general feel), with both dealing with complex human emotions. Both are beautiful, emotive albums and I hugely enjoy both.
March 27, 201114 yr Under The Pink is fantastic, though. Favourites: Pretty Good Year, God, Wrong Band, Waitress, Cornflake Girl, and the sublime 'Yes, Anastasia' No 'Past The Mission'? Not keen on Anastasia myself... Hounds Of Love would be equal bottom with Aerial. :o ??? Oh well... I agree with Never For Ever though, I'd probably rate it after HOL.
March 28, 201114 yr Personally "Jackie's strength" (Wedding Cake Mix) remains one of my ALL TIME favourite songs!!
March 28, 201114 yr Anyone who thinks hey lyrics are always weak should really look up those on From the Choirgirld Hotel. Jackie's Strength and Playboy Mommy are very well written, from memory and there's probably other well written stuff that I can't recall right now.
May 7, 201114 yr great news for russt68, New album and European tour "It's a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years. I have used the structure of a song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.” Hear exclusive tracks from Night of Hunters via the website and email soon. http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=1a5dbd...p;id=c6cecb5695 9/28 Finland, Helsinki, Ice Hall 9/30 Russia, St Petersburg, Oktyabrsky Hall 10/2 Russia, Moscow, Crocus Hall 10/4 Luxembourg, Den Atelier 10/5 France, Paris, Le Grand Rex 10/7 Italy, Milan, Teatro Smeraldo 10/8 Italy, Rome, Auditorium Parco della Musica 10/10 Germany, Hamburg, Laieszhalle 10/11 Germany, Berlin, Tempodrom 10/13 Poland, Warsaw, Sala Kongresowa 10/17 Holland, Amsterdam, Carre 10/20 Norway, Oslo, Sentrum Scene 10/21 Denmark, Copenhagen, The Royal Theatre 10/24 Switzerland, Lucerne, KKL 10/25 Austria, Vienna, Stadthalle F 10/26 Germany, Frankfurt, Alte Oper 10/28 Belgium, Antwerp, QEH 10/29 Belgium, Brussels, Bozar 10/31 Germany, Essen, Philharmonie 11/2 UK, London, Royal Albert Hall 11/4 UK, Manchester, Apollo 11/6 UK, Glasgow, Royal Concert Hall 11/8 UK, Belfast, Waterfront 11/9 Eire, Dublin, Grand Canal Theatre Edited May 7, 201114 yr by tonyttt31
