Sounds like the same accusation aimed at Tori's last abum too.

I find it inpenetrable but it seems more of a grower tha Ariel, which i found very dull.

I'm a massive Tori loon but even I have to accept that her past few albums have been pretty awful. Still, at least she moved up in quality from Abnormally Attracted To Sin - although that was by FAR her worst album to date so I guess it wasn't difficult.

Quick Tori album rank:

01 To Venus And Back (not a popular first choice but I adore it)

02 Under The Pink

03 From The Choirgirl Hotel

04 Little Earthquakes

05 Boys For Pele

06 Scarlet's Walk

07 American Doll Posse

08 Strange Little Girls

09 Night Of Hunters

10 Midwinter Graces

11 The Beekeeper

12 Abnormally Attracted To Sin

At the moment I would say (excluding Night of Hunters and Strange Little Girls as I haven't heard them in full):

01 Boys For Pele

02 Under The Pink

03 From The Choirgirl Hotel

04 Scarlet's Walk

05 Little Earthquakes

06 The Beekeeper

07 To Venus And Back

08 Abnormally Attracted To Sin

09 Midwinter Graces

10 American Doll Posse

Head and shoulders above most albums by most females - (apart from Kate)

01 Under The Pink

02 From The Choirgirl Hotel

03 Little Earthquakes

04 Scarlet's Walk

05 Boys For Pele

Albums with a few good tracks and lots of filler

06 To Venus And Back

07 American Doll Posse

08 Strange Little Girls

09 Abnormally Attracted To Sin

10 The Beekeeper

Albums that I cannot seem to find any standout tracks on.

11 Night Of Hunters

12 Midwinter Graces

Really? :o

Although you should do, her early work is really special to me.

no :o

i dunno i downloaded Boys For Pele and i realized how nice a lot of it is. a lot of it is pretty much straight up my alley in terms of aesthetic. i dunno why i had given her such a hard time. i think from the little output i heard, which was mostly her recent stuff, i was not much of a fan, but there's something special about her older stuff.

Pele is great. I particularly love Beauty Queen / Horses, Doughnut Song, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Putting The Damage On and Hey Jupiter although there aren't really many bad moments on it.

wait until you get to the second half of Under the Pink - it will take you to places in your head you didn't know existed.

They are the highlights for me too. I would add Marianne.

wohoooo!!! another convert. If only every one dismissed her 00s work and went straight to her 90s albums.

Although, Scarlet's Walk (2002) - while being less sharp - is filled with beautiful songs.

Precious Things and Hotel have the most edge, in my opinion

Pitch lowered so she sounds like a man. Still haunting.

Another retrospective - Gold Dust. I'm really looking forward to Winter and Precious Things. She's cut Yes, Anastasia in half - I hope it's not a mistake doing that. The track Gold Dust is already couched in strings.

I listened the streaming of this this last night - it was cool. From Yes, Anastasia to Gold Dust was fantastic. Best part of any best-of or compilation I've ever heard. Buying it later today.
