It seems totally ludicrous now, but yes they did... Their single "Relax" was banned from having any airplay on Radio 1 (which of course pretty much guaranteed that it would sell a million...  ) because of "sexually explicit lyrics"; the video was banned (even though when you compare it to the average R&B or Christina Aguilera video it seems ridiculously tame now..), the 'moral majority' (ie Daily Mail and Express readers) were up in arms about its "lewd" and "explicit" portrayal of *whisper it* gay sex (gasp! shock! horror!).....

"Two Tribes" didn't get banned as a single, but for some peculiar reason the video did (basically it was a mock wrestling match between a Ronnie Reagan impersonator and someone impersonating the then leader of the Soviet Union).... It was hilarious political satire in the vein of "Spitting Image" and not sexual in any way whatsoever, so fukk knows why it was banned....

So, yeah, it's pretty safe to say to say that FGTH were sh!t stirrers....

Hmmm, I can't remember.. Probably against, because Holly was so blatantly and outspokenly gay,and The Scum still pretend to follow a 'family values' line.....

I cant remember either.... how stupid did Mike Read look, though, when he banned it? Prick.

Was it him? Couldn't remember if it was him or that other prick Simon Bates....

But, yes, stupid indeed... -_-

show said it was mike reed

Relax was only really banned by Radio 1 and TOTP, and then only after Mike Read said he didn't think it was an appropriate song to play at breakfast time. He didn't ask for it to be banned, the management agreed with him. The ban was lifted in time for TOTP's anniversary show in October 1984, and the song was eventually played on the year end Top 40 countdown on Radio 1.

Unlike previous bannings of records, local radio didn't follow suit and my local radio station continued to play it, albeit receiving fewer plays than what a normal #1 would receive. There was also a (almost) instrumental version that some stations played.

Frankie fever was massive in 1984, but whether people were really shocked by them, I don't know. I recall some people complaining about the cover of Relax, some about the gay aspect but many people seemed more caught up in the hype and the "Frankie Says" T Shirts. The mid 80s were a strange time in Britain. Being gay was no longer seen as a great shock, and many acts came out in 1984, including Freddie Mercury if I recall. There was an increasing tolerance towards gays which was unfortunately undone the following year when AIDS became a big media issue and public concern. Then there was a backlash.

by the time Frankie had come along, Marc Almond, Jimmy Somerville, Pete Burns and Boy George had all helped gay acceptance in the mainstream, so they can't take any credit for 'shocking' people with gay stuff to be honest - Jesus, even Paul Weller was stroking a man's ear and making homoerotic videos in 1983!

The dancer, Paul Rutherford, after FGTH, released some corking acid house records. 'Get Real' is one of the defining records of that era... excellent stuff.

I loved Frankie, the first album was shocking, though... bloated c**p... and apart from Warriors of the Wasteland, their second album, Liverpool, was awful, too. I always preferred the Power of Love to the 2 bigger singles myself.

Yeah it was one of the first singles to have sexual lyrics in, like scott said tame by nowadays though.

I liked Welcome to the pleasure dome by FGTH.

The 12" mixes of Two Tribes were good.

The video was very powerful at the time as it was the time of a lot of tension between USA and USSR.

actually dont think the show mentioned anything about queen? just holly jonsson who was hiv in 1983 and jermaine stewart who dies of aids

You're quite wrong here. There was plenty banned for this reason in the late 60s & 70s.

Max Romeo - Wet Dream #10 in 1969 was the first followed by

Soul Sisters - Wreck A Buddy in 1969

Both of these were reggae tracks

Rita - Erotica in 1969. It was banned because of the heavy breathing sounds like someone making love.

In the mid 70s there were numerous singles by Judge Dread (with his spoof reggae) these were his charting singles that got banned.

Big Six - #11 in 1972

Big Seven - #8 in 1972

Big Eight - #14 in 1973

Je'Taime - #9 in 1975

Big Ten - #14 in 1975

Come Outside - #14 in 1975

The Winkle Man - #35 in 1976

Y Viva Suspenders - #27 in 1976

Up With The c**k - #49 in 1978

The first single to be banned for any type of sexual Connotations was in 1969.

Anyone else remember JE'TAIME...MOI NON PLUS by JANE BIRKIN & SERGE GAINSBOURG.

It was banned because of the heavy breathing sounds like someone making love.

This single created pop history in itself.

When the single had climed up to #2 the record company (Fontana) deleated the single due to its controversy. It was then quickly released on the Major Minor label.

This was the first and only time a single had seperate chart positions for both labels with the same version of the same song..

On 4 October 1969 the Major Minor release was at #3. Because of stock still in the shops the Fontana label's chart position was #16.

The following week the Major Minor release reached #1 and the Fontana's chart position was #33.

This created a dilemma for Top Of The Pops.

Top Of The Pops always played the #1 single. They tried to bluff the viewers but it didn't really work.

This same week there was an instrumental version called LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT by a group of session musicians calling themselves SOUNDS NICE. The single was at #22 so guess what, this was played as the #1.

Also at that time it was the biggest ever selling single for a completely foreign language record.
