Here's my pick of the year. Couldn't narrow it down to 12 I'm afraid:

7. Humate - Love Stimulation

quite a few dance tracks in this list, this is one of the best

hmm mmh... a long-lost classic...

think it was first released in 1993..... but re-re-re-released many times after....

Another trance-y classic from Europe from the early 90s, and much re-released, was Jam and Spoon's 'Odyssey to Anyoona' which is almost the same record as Humate - have a listen - this is stunning...

I wasn't aware it was a re-release, so thanks for that. I agree it's a long lost classic

1999, I remember very well, this was the year of 'abeefa! Here are my choices...

1999: The album

01: Beverley Knight "Made It Back (99 Remix)"

In her early days, Bev was a force and a half on the UK urban scene... now she is dreary MOR toss and it's such a shame because this track, spliced with Chic'c "Good Times' was a belter!

02: Destiny's Child "Bug-A-Boo"

Remember when Destinys Child were, y'know, good? No they really were, a very long time ago... check this kooky nugget!

03: Groove Armada "If Everybody Looked The Same"

Ultrcool space-age funk from my favorite album of this year, "Vertigo".

04: Moby "Porcelain"

Spine-tingling track that capture the sun rising... If only I was really there at Cafe Mambo!

05: Basement Jaxx "Red Alert"

To me, 1999 means Basement Jaxx and their unbelievable debut album, "Remedy". And "Red Alert" is my favorite track of this year, sounding like NOTHING else at the time! GO JAXX!!! This clip is taken from their live performance at Glasto in 04... it's easy to see why they are adored as a live act too!

06: Doolally "Straight From The Heart"

Balls to Shanks and Bigfoot, this was far, far better (produced by the same 2 geezers anyway).

07: Paul Johnson "Get Get Down"

Let's face it, you either loved it or hated it! I personally couldn't get enough of it! Piano-lead Ibiza anthem!

08: Armand Van Helden "You Don't Know Me"

Take a pinch of Musique's 80s electro track "Dancin', the kick drum from Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams" and a wicked soulful vocal from a then relatively unknown Duane Harden. Marvellous track AND a number one hit to boot!

09: Veracocha "Carte Blanche"

Well, can't really reflect on 99 without a bit of trance, eh? You're bang on with this one, Rob, this is the KILLER!!!

10: Bran Van 3000 "Drinking In LA"

I have no idea why I like this, on pen to paper, I should really hate this - file under "random".

Edited by ScottyEm

lol that reason was ridiculous. You didnt have 43 chart toppers in 1999 but you had like 41. Hardly a big difference. Anyway, I guess 2000 will always be my favourite, doubt it'll ever change with the way music is heading.

No - we had 36 chart-toppers. But we didn't a spell of 14 weeks and another spell of 12 weeks with a different chart-topper in 1999 - like we did in 2000.

so what did you like?

There were all sorts that I liked - I wasn't a big fan of pop then, like I was merely a few years ago, yet there was plenty that I liked. (Even Westlife - :shudder:)

No, but they were hardly that different. 99 is the year after 2000 with the most #1s (it had 42 not 43 my mistake), and there was a many periods of 6 to 8 consecutive #1s.

Scotty, wasnt Porcelain from 2000? Good pick on Bug A Boo, one of their best.

Ah boobies! Nevermind.

OK, a more recent year (just keeping in with the rules of Retro). Was 1999 a better year for music than '85 or '86?

Here's my pick of the year. Couldn't narrow it down to 12 I'm afraid:

1. Semisonic - Secret Smile

love this track!

yeah great track - tho loved Semisonic's Chemistry much much more - should have been massive and maybe it would have been if released in 2007. pity that with his recent James Morrison co-writing credit it looks like Dan Wilson could be coming to become the new Eg White - tho seeing as he's like the co-write champion of the world!!!....tho maybe more at Gary Clark's level - tho not spotted in connection to Natalie Imbruglia yet...

best of 1999:

:cheer: :yahoo:  S Club 7 - Bring it all back :cheer: :yahoo:

Where do you begin with 1999? ;)

I was very much an active single buyer at the time and I was always glued to "The Box" music channel watching all the latest videos with my sister.

Britney Spears - "Baby One More Time" and "Crazy"

Alice DJ - "Better Off Alone" and "Back in My Life"

Honeyz - "Never Let You Down" and "Love of a Lifetime"

Destiny's Child - "Bills, Bills, Bills"

Thunderbugs - "Friends Forever"

An obscure song which a friend sent me an mp3 of by "Minty" a while back. It was some Australian kids show about a pop star and this trance song reached the lower elcheons of the charts. It's a trance style song and here is 1.30 mins of it:

Whitney Houston - "It's Not Right, But It's Ok"

Cleopatra - "Touch of Love" - this only reached #28 and I think this was their best single:

Kele le Roc - "My Love" - What happened to this girl? A very tender ballad which was a big hit.

Billie Piper - "Honey to the bee" - Perhaps her best song

Bachelor Girl - "Buses and trains" - I got hit by a bus, I got struck by a train

Marvin and Tamara - "Groove Machine" - Not the proper video or me dancing :D But I was mad on this song aged 14 ^_^

Madonna - "Beautiful Stranger"

Adam Rickit - "Everything My Heart Desires" - Yes it's a bit cheesy, but I do love this song

Geri Halliwell - "Mi Chico Latino" - I know, I know but it's a cool summer song

Toutes les Filles - "Thats what love can do" - They were French, and they covered a pop song from the early 90s which I was well done. It made #41

Point Break - "Do We Rock" - Hot boyband who were short-lived

I bought these. Loved them!

Whilst I don't doubt you over how many No1s there were in 99, we didn't have a spell of 28 weeks (more than half a year) with only two No1s lasting more than seven days at the top.

wow - that's nice! you remember Minty - the Angela Kelly show (and obv not Leigh Bowery - that would have been a very f***ed up kids tv show  )... used to love watching that show...it was almost proto-montana/cyrus in it's set up...but i guess if you watched it now and compared it to montana/cyrus it would be like comparing prisoner (cell block h) to the sopranos...

btw when it came to byker grove...point break may have not have been as good as ant & dec...but thought Freaky Time was great...pity most of them freefalled into oblivion after that...

Point Break - Freaky Time
