A challenge and a half! Let's see if I can make the magic ten!

01: Evelyn Thomas "High Energy"

The video certainly compromises, but sod that, this is an immense track that arguably began the Hi-RG sound!

02: Madonna "Lucky Star"

"Holiday" and "Borderline" are great, of course, but only this truly captures that true 80s club sound of the time. Pure vintage Madge!

03: Chaka Khan "I Feel For You"

THe anthem of 84 for me.... minus any youtube clip because it was produced/penned by Prince and, yup, anything involving the mentalist is removed!

04: Chaka Khan + Rufus "Ain't Nobody"

...It's fortunate she did TWO belters in this year!

05: Pointer Sisters "Automatic"

Great track and hysterical TOTP footage to accompany! Gotta love that electro soul funk!

06: Prince "I Would Die 4 U"

Yeah I've got the picture... NO FACKING PRINCE!!! So, here is Space Cowboy's cool version from 2002.

07: Shannon "Let The Music Play"

Is this the greatest pre-house dance track of all time? Ur-huh!

08: Pointer Sisters "Jump"

Yeah I know it's cheesey but I don't give a toss! The Girls Aloud version was roadkill, however.

09: Bananarama "Robert De'Niros Waiting"

The best pre-SAW track by the 'Ramas.

10: Sister Sledge "Lost In Music"

Ooooh it's that unmistakable Nile Rodgers fiddling on that bass!

And this years guilty pleasure

11: Hazell Dean "Searchin (I Gotta Find A Man)"

Maybe not even that guilty perhaps, this is a great track that I shall defend! Check the male dancer on the right just before the 1st chorus kicks in... legendary!

hmm... a good year was 84...

1. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dazzle

One of their smaller hits, barely scraping the top 40 in May 1984 - but it remains one of my favourite Bansees singles - love the Bond-theme strings. Cracking....

2. Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

This and The Cutter are my favourite Bunnymen singles (alongwith the glorious Nothing Ever Lasts Forever, of course).... and how many US teen movies has this single featured in? A true classic...

3. Everything But The Girl - Each and Every One

This sums up the year for me - love this track loads - Tracey Thorn's a much-underrated vocalist - her Out Of The Woods album was easily one of the albums of 2007.

4. Alison Moyet - Love Resurrection

Her debut solo single, with its infamous rude lyrics ("I want you to grow in my hand"...indeed)... Love Res was a top 10 hit in the hot hot hot summer of 84. The standout track from her disappointing Alf album. Strange video....

5. The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make?

Yet another iconic TOTP appearance from Moz and the boys - this was the greatest single from their eponymous debut album.

6. Sandie Shaw - Hand In Glove

It's rare that a cover version surpasses the original - but Ms Shaw did it with her version of The Smiths' debut single. Plus, it's accompanied by my favourite ever TOTP appearance. Fabulous

7. Swans Way - Soul Train

Minor one-hit wonders - this strange but superb single was one of my faves of the year. Great stuff.

8. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power of Love

What can be said about this track? It's by far my favourite of their 3 massive hits of this year - just gorgeous. I remember seeing a frail and obviously ill Holly Johnson sing this at a Pride event in London in the 90s - he did it beautifully. Perfect lyrics. Awesome single.

9. Depeche Mode - Master and Servant

The clean-cut Basildon boys had discovered the seedy pleasures of Berlin by this point and this ode to sado masochistic sex, complete with a bondage-homage video, took the UK public by surprise. Especially Martin Gore's Mum who had to endure her son on national television in leather mini-skirts, handcuffs and lacy bras..... a good look, perhaps? Excellent single.

10. The Sisters of Mercy - Walk Away

From their mesmerising First and Last and Always album, this is the standout single - oh those goth days.... ;)

11. Propaganda - Dr Mabuse

Superb production and one of the finest singles of the 80s.... Dr Mabuse....

12. Divine - You Think You're a Man

One of Stock Aitken Waterman's earliest hits - I tried in vain to find that famous Top of the Pops appearance for this, which gathered more complaints than any other TOTP appearance before or since. This is a great single.... RIP Divine :(

Guilty pleasure...

Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again

Why guilty? Well, Ms Lennox has successfully ruined any great reputation she once had in recent years... and Eurythmics 'comeback' was nothing short of depressing... but this single, and video, is superb.... love it a lot.

OK, here's my pick of '84:

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax

2. Hazell Dean - Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)

3. Eugene Wilde - Gotta Get You Home With Me Tonight

4. OMD - Tesla Girls

5. Eurythmics - Sexcrime (1984)

6. General Public - Tenderness

7. Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

8. Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

9. Style Council - Shout To The Top

10. Malcolm McLaren - Madame Butterfly

11. Propaganda - Dr Mabuse

12. Adam Ant - Apollo 9

oh and

13. Divine - You Think You're A Man

Would have left a message under each of them, but just got back in and a little drunk :drink:

I'm with you on this one. My mate is a die-hard rock/garage punk fanatic but will sing the praises of Divine at every chance given. It's clearly a cult thing, but it doesn't float my boat either.

Those early John Waters / Divine movies were superb... celluloid masterpieces....

how bizarre - my dad just mentioned that fact about 5 minutes ago before i put the walker brothers on.

Well, I ended up buying the best of Prince CD the other day mainly due to the restrictions he's put on youtube, so maybe his arrogance has paid off! HA!

thats utterly revolting russ..... thats going too far..

that taste must have stuck in his mouth for ages :puke2:

Shouldn't have that blinded him?

That is probably the most revolting thing I've seen yet!

..only if the dog was a carrier of the 'parva virus'... i believe he caught worms :puke2:

The Year of my Birth!!!!!!!

My faves of 1984:

Ultravox - "Dancing With Tears in my eyes"

Jim Diamond - "Should Have Known Better"

An obscure track from 1984 which wasnt a big hit in the UK, but in Europe. Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora "When the rain begins to fall"

Paul McCartney - "No More Lonely Nights"

The Pointer Sisters - "I'm So Excited" - they were so fantastic!

Laura Branigan - "Self Control"

Cyndi Lauper - "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

Madonna - "Like A Virgin"

Queen - "I want to break free"

Bronski Beat - "Smalltown Boy"

Tina Turner - "Whats Love Got to do with it"

Billy Idol - "Eyes Without A Face"

Another obscure song from 1984 - "To France" by Mike Oldfield and Maggie O'Reilly. This is so haunting:

Laura again, with the fantastic "Ti Amo" which only made #100 :(

The contender for worst song of 1984 is that god damn awful "Agadoo" song :puke2:

My Top 12 from 1984 would be largely fairly obvious tracks as I was 12/13 in this year and my love of music was growing:

1. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

2. Duran Duran - Wild Boys

3. Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

4. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes

5. Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face

6. Prince - Purple Rain

7. Paul McCartney - No More Lonely Nights

8. The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make

9. George Michael - Careless Whisper

10. David Bowie - Blue Jean

11. Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good

& a song that made #2 in Australia, #1 in their native New Zealand & was a modest hit in the USA but flopped in the UK:

12. Split Enz - Message To My Girl

well at last ive time! lol.. here is my 'album of 84'...

ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN - killing moon a wonderful original indie track, wistful, haunting, wonderful!

WANG CHUNG - dance hall days great brass backing...

SPECIAL AKA - nelson mandela i like the south african sounds illustrating this great political track

CARMEL - more more more brilliant early 60's sound, heavy on the brass, one underrated singer.

SOS BAND - just be good to me covered by cook n co pretty well but this original is still the best version imho.

SANDIE SHAW - hand in glove with the smiths this track was definately her 'coolest' with a fantastic performance on totp

EVELYN THOMAS - high energy cashing in on the trend at the time, but its still a compulsively catchy track

BRONSKI BEAT - smalltown boy the most soulful song of the modern times imho, jimmy capturing the feel of desperation for a young gay lad in the 80's. this sad, melancholy track portrays perfectly this persons plight...love it!

PRINCE - when doves cry lyrics dont come much better then this, the only prince track i like, but boy imho its a corker

LAURA BRANNIGAN - self control simply a damn good song!

ALPHAVILLE - big in japan another damn good song

STRANGLERS - skin deep a track that should be released today as its message is more poignant then ever.

I hope you meant Echo and the Bunnymen, Rob!

FFS!!!!! thats what happens when your mind is elsewhere and you are rushing!

indeed i do... wtf was i thinking?.

The contender for worst song of 1984 is that god damn awful "Agadoo" song :puke2:

Black Lace were on TV the other day...on one of those list shows - i couldn't stop laughing at them - great!! and also may have been the true originators of that limihl/lesbian lady haircut circa 2003 style
