Posted October 18, 200816 yr with the pop promo seeming to be a dying art..... and the chat about Shakespears Sister on another thread, have we had a topic for our fave pop promos? If we have, it's escaped my colander memory...anyway... here's my top 5.... 1. Shakespears Sister - Goodbye Cruel World lignn1VWAl8 Sophie Muller at her best - this single was released twice.... and the full video rarely shown due to its length... here's it in its entirety - superb.... 2. Massive Attack - Karmacoma MGwcz_DzyyI Most people choose Teardrop as their favourite Massive video - but the creepy plastic baby doesn't do it for me... I love this head-f*** of a promo far more.... 3. Bjork - All Is Full Of Love EjAoBKagWQA This top 5 could be, in all honesty, made up completely of Bjork videos - each and every one a masterpiece - but this is beautiful - perfect, just faultless. 4. Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy Pe-XNav5mWU Scariest pop promo ever? Chris Cunningham, whose incredible work notches up 3 entries in my top 5, at his terrifying best.... 5. Portishead - Only You 1PnNrtUTwa4 The third of Cunningham's works - has there ever been a vide better matched to a song? The editing on this is second to none.... awesome.... and no video best-of could really be complete without these 2..... ;) Madonna - Bedtime Story qHjZyexg4ro Madonna - Justify My Love 8hmedQupKUI both absolutely stunning promos... Notable mentions, too, to Duran Duran 'Wild Boys', Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill and almost everything by New Order....
October 19, 200816 yr Nice choices there Russ, I love that Bjork video (heck, anything by the lady is almost always bound to create a talking point). Glad you went for "Come To Daddy" and not that other one, "Windowlicker". For me, I struggle to remember those truly grest ones aswell. Let's have a bash... 01: Massive Attack "Protection" This used to be on rotation on MTV and it's easy to see why. Not only my favorite track of theirs, but also their best vid. UIp--5E3AbY 02: Kylie Minogue "Confide In Me" The biggest cornerstone in her career was this. The track has aged well, and I think the video is visually stunning. ywd00tNiB20 03: Bjork "Army Of Me" Gotta have a Bjork vid in here, as wisely noted by Russ... LyEJxzQM24Q 04: Chemical Brothers "Electrobank" A very underated Chems track and the vid is a blinder - like nothing else at the time! PVrA2mtrHUM 05: Daft Punk "Revolution 909" Any director mad enough to chart the life of a tomato get's a thumbs up from me! YwdaOhRNPyg And just for kicks... Lionel Richie "Hello" I know it has been said time and time again, but even to this day, this video never fails to cause hysterics! PDZcqBgCS74
October 21, 200816 yr I'm not even going to attempt to post the 5 Best Videos ever made, as they've all been mentioned or already posted or are well known. For The Record mine are: 1. Michael Jackson - Thriller 2. Duran Duran - Wild Boys 3. Bjork - All Is Full Of Love 4. Madonna - Like A Prayer 5. Beastie Boys - Sabotage So instead i'll post 5 randomly great videos from the 1980s that time (& VH1 Classic) have forgotten: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Don't Come Around Here No More (1985) - A fab Alice In Wonderland themed video, featuring a Dave Stewart (Eurythmics production) and backing vocals from then Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey & US session singer/songwriter extraordinare Marcella Detroit. Kate Bush - Experiment IV (1986) - The video as all of her work was from 1980 was directed by Kate herself. Musically not one of Kate's finest four minutes, but visually it tells its chilling horror story (PS. Spot the famous cameos) of what can happen if music falls into the wrong hands. Apparently this song was a protest at the ever increasing way Record Companies were producing product over musical artistry. (That's you Pete Waterman, Simon Cowell, Louie Walsh, Simon Fuller ....) Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life (1986) - This video is proof long before OK Go that a great idea can have more impact than a huge budget. A good old fashioned Stars In Your Eyes type video. David Sylvian - Red Guitar (1984) - This was the first ever video directed by photographer Anton Corbijn, who has since gone on to direct a host of famous videos with his distinctive black & white photographic art form. & lastly the video that I find so unintentionally funny: Arcadia - Election Day (1985) - Quite possibly the most pretentious video ever made. Ridiculous dancing, Simon Le Bon with his Prince William haircut, Nick Rhodes looking like a camp extra from a Sisters of Mercy video, symbolic imagery galore & a hint of some sort of subculture you half expect to see F1 supremo Max Mosley at. Hilarious. I'll post 5 1990s videos at a later date.
October 21, 200816 yr Author the video that I find so unintentionally funny: Arcadia - Election Day (1985) - Quite possibly the most pretentious video ever made. Hilarious. agreed - I really love the single, though...... Arcadia's 'Goodbye is Forever' is my favourite thing the boys have ever done, actually, with or without Duran.
October 22, 200816 yr the most glareing omission so far visage - fade to grey superb track accompanied by a superb vid.
October 22, 200816 yr Author I think it's stranger that there's no mention of Bowie yet... Ashes to Ashes, China Girl, Day In Day Out.... all great videos...
October 23, 200816 yr I think it's stranger that there's no mention of Bowie yet... Ashes to Ashes, China Girl, Day In Day Out.... all great videos... indeed, but my memory is rather sketchy

Ashes to Ashes, China Girl, Day In Day Out.... all great videos... i wouldn't they are that great videos...yeah the bowie dvd has some great songs on it...but tbh think most would work as well with old totp stock than thinking about the video in its creative enterty...

October 25, 200816 yr This isnt my actual top 5 but imo these are some of the best videos ever, i cant be arsed to find the youtube vids tbh  but im sure you will know most of them anyway... think one of the best music videos i've seen...and even tho its a video where nothing much happens and where its one 'static' photo with a load of graphics over the top - however its always unnerving and always sends a shiver up the spine...and the first time i saw it i had to replay it to see what how it was at the beginning Y7T49_LPt-8 Benny Benassi - Satisfaction (the Original Video not the UK one with all the woobly boobies, powertools and legs)
