They paved the direction of dance music.

Public Enemy, without question the most important, groundbreaking Rap artists in the history of the genre IMO.... Intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, radical... The "Black CNN" indeed....

Others of note - Ice-T, Phil Lynnot (Black AND Irish, so he must've had it rough.... ), Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson...

Jimi Hendrix of course. Sly Stone and George Clinton. Muddy Waters. Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Nina Simone. Miles Davis.

Stevie Wonder

Michael Jackson

Run-DMC

Prince (is he black? :/ )

James Brown

Aretha Franklin

It looks like most if not all of the obvious candidates have been mentioned already.

well i suppose the ones that have been mentioned are the most obv for rock, pop and dance...tho i guess if somebody came up who was really really knowledable about their jazz and blues..then they could go on for ages...tho even tho i like this stuff i would say in comparison to something like Aqua only a novice...

however he's some good stuff....

NINA SIMONE- "DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD" (1964)

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS - I Put A Spell On You

Black Snake Moan - Blind Lemon Jefferson

Nat "King" Cole - Nature Boy

Nat "King" Cole - Autumn leaves

Well, I did mention John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson... Johnson is legendary because he is the guy that is claimed sold his soul to the devil "at the crossroads" in order to be able to write great Blues music.... He died young (aged 27, just like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, so make of that what you will, it's a bit fukkin' spooky....) and quite possibly of strychnine poisoning, but not before becoming quite possibly the most influential bluesman of all time.... His style almost certainly informing and influencing Hard Rock/Metal, guitarists such as Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Tommy Iommi citing him as an influence... The White Stripes' Jack White also sees Johnson as an inspiration, so there is little doubting Johnson's huge importance in Black Music history....
