November 3, 200816 yr well i suppose the ones that have been mentioned are the most obv for rock, pop and dance...tho i guess if somebody came up who was really really knowledable about their jazz and blues.. Well, I did mention John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson... Johnson is legendary because he is the guy that is claimed sold his soul to the devil "at the crossroads" in order to be able to write great Blues music.... He died young (aged 27, just like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, so make of that what you will, it's a bit fukkin' spooky....) and quite possibly of strychnine poisoning, but not before becoming quite possibly the most influential bluesman of all time.... His style almost certainly informing and influencing Hard Rock/Metal, guitarists such as Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Tommy Iommi citing him as an influence... The White Stripes' Jack White also sees Johnson as an inspiration, so there is little doubting Johnson's huge importance in Black Music history....
