1998 was, for me, the worse year of the 1990s. I can't be bothered posting vids, so here is a list of my chosen tracks from this very bleak year.

01: Stardust "Music Sounds Better With You" Goes without saying really, any write up of 98 is incomplete without this.

02: Davd Morales "Needin U" Piano-laden Ibiza smash!

03: Lauryn Hill + Aretha Franklin "A Rose Is Still A Rose" Gorgeous, under-rated modern soul track... and it's ARETHA!

04: MJ Cole "Sincere" Possibly the greatest UK garage track ever? Yes...

05: ETA "Casual Sub (Burning Spear)" Slightly random one-off track by this Danish dance act. Very cool summer choon.

06: Madonna "The Power Of Goodbye" Taken from one fine album, beautiful track. The strings in this are immense.

07: Kylie "Breathe" Very under-rated track from Kylie OBE

08: Energy 52 "Cafe Del Mar" Naturally...

09: BT "Flaming June" Epic!

10: The Tamperer "Feel It" Just what will she look like with a chimney on her?

11: Deborah Cox "Sentimental" Not sure if this was 98, but ah well, totally slick track. 98 seems to be the year of long-lost modern soul records.

Well I think I made my feelings about this period of pop music known in the 1997 thread but there were some good tracks around:

1. Ray of Light - Madonna A truly terrific pop single.

2. The Boy is Mine - Brandy and Monica Loved the harp (sample?) on this. Great song with just a touch of vindictiveness.

3. Teardrop - Massive Attack It's Liz Fraser! Gorgeous!

4. Right Here Right Now - Fatboy Slim My favourite of his singles in what was a massive year for Norman Cook

5. Eurodisco - Bis Why wasn't this number 1?!? A storming change of tack from the former lo-fi popsters

6. My Star - Ian Brown I so wanted him to do well with this. I remember feeling worried for him before it came out but what a return. Gloriously mad song about NASA.

7. Celebrity Skin - Hole The fact that she is a bonkers old trout shouldn't disguise the fact that this was a storming single.

8. Nobody's Fault But My Own - Beck Track from Mutations that just sends the old shivers up the spine when I hear it.

9. Everyday Should Be a Holiday - Dandy Warhols Made me feel happy to be alive!

10. Pure Morning - Placebo Great updated glam stomp with truly memorable lyrics.

11. Sunday - Sonic Youth Languid laid back record from the NY noiseniks.

12. If You Tolerate This... - Manic Street Preachers Manics at #1... of course this has to be in the list!

And each and everyone of them better than the loathsome trailer trash queen. ;)

these are better than britney:
