Sticking with the late '90s, here's my favourites of '97:

1. White Town - Your Woman

Superb one hit wonder.

2. Cardigans - Lovefool

I remember in late '96 when this made No.21. I couldn't believe it. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and a re-release went to No. 2 in '97.

3. Sash! - Encore Une Fois

OK, it's a complete rip off of Insomnia, but still a top club classic

4. Pet Shop Boys - Red Letter Day

Went straight in at No.9, then vanished out of the Top 40!

5. Tina Moore - Never Gonna Let You Go

Fantastic floor filler.

6. Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Mix)

Also a hit in '96, but as it hit No.1 in early '97, it qualifies.

7. Submerge ft Jan Johnston - Take Me By The Hand

Only made No.28. Deserved to go at least Top 3. Forgotten house gem. Long overdue a remake.

8. Red 5 - I Love You...Stop!

Silly house tune, but I loved it.

9. Basement Jaxx - Fly Life

Their first hit. Really like this!

10. Echo & The Bunnymen - Nothing Lasts Forever

Too many club tunes on the list, so best balance it out a bit. Superb Top 10 comeback.

11. Depeche Mode - Home

I still think this is one of their best. It only made No.23

12. Olive - Outlaw

Love You're Not Alone, but what about this equally good No.14 follow up?

Worst of the year for me would be that Perfect Day, Children In Need single.

Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand van Helden remix)

No Mercy - Where Do You Go

Dario G - Sunchyme

The Source - You Got The Love (beating both the original and 2006 remake for me)

And, erm, 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' by the Backstreet Boys

I forgot all about Ain't Talkin' Bout Dub. And Monaco - that was a great song. I liked the follow up Sweet Lips too. Should have added that to my list.

Oh, and I also forgot Tarantino's New Star by North & South. Don't care what anyone says, that's a terrific pop tune!

i go into resource and retro charts... everyhit.com then select the year and view the 'whole' month by month. that way youll not miss any of the big hits (but minor ones may not show). prevents any mistakes/omissions!

1997... OK Go!

01: Daft Punk "Da Funk"

And so began the French house music revolution! "Around The World" was the bigger hit (but, frankly, it get's on my t*ts) plus this has a far better vid! Taken from the 97 albm of the year, "Homework"

02: Nuyorican Soul Feat Jocelyn Brown "It's Alright, I Feel It"

Frankly, Ms Brown can blast her way through a train timetable and would still sound incredible. A real spirit raiser, such quality track.

03: The Blueboy "Remember Me"

Ding-dig-a-ding-din-din-ga-ding...

04: Kylie "Did It Again"

One of the key tracks from Kylie's greatest and most important album, "Impossible Princess". Crackin' vid too, Kylie looks gorgeous as ever here.

05: Basement Jaxx "Flylife"

The greatest dance act on earth and this was their first taste of the mainstream when this went top 20. Space-age house music that could've easily have been made yesterday while anything Sash! made in this year sounds dated and naff!

06: Sneaker Pimps "Spin Spin Sugar (Armand Van Helden Dark Garage Mix)

97 was the year of killer mixes from Armand Van Helden. Personally, I think his mix of Sneaker Pimps "Spin Spin Sugar" cannot be topped!

07: Sneaker Pimps "Post Modern Sleaze"

And another from the 90s indie-darlings... Real moody, cool track. Their underrated "Becoming X" album got me through those late nightes studying at Uni.

08: Republica "Drop Dead Gorgeous"

I know I'm sorry, this is bad taste but when we're off to the indie 90s revival night, you know you'll be dancing your t*ts off to this! And lets not frget the gorgeous Saffron got every other British girl to get red streaks!

09: En Vogue "Don't Let Go (Love)"

Balladry R&B isn't usually my kind of thing, but the superior En Vogue were on the mics and this was a wicked bit of slick 90s soul. I still think the handfull of tracks these girls did knock ANYTHING out of the water Destinys Child did.

10: TLC "Creep"

And the 2nd greatest all girl act of the 1990s... The "CrazySexyCool" album is still essential listening!

11: Ultra Nate "Free"

Arguably the most famous US garage track of all time. A humongous hit at the time and still a wicked track that will floor the coolest house floors right through to wedding parties.

12: Todd Terry/Martha Wash/Jocelyn Brown "Something Goin' On"

The first two ladies of house show them all how it should be done! A true evergreen house anthem!

And this years guily pleasure...

Livin Joy "Where Can I Find Love"

Terribly dated track from mid-90s Italian euro house act, but being 13 at the time, I remeber playing this all the time as a kid. This started my obsession with dance diva's!

great year for pop  so glad Eternal finally got to No.1 with what was by far their best single, shame it all went pear shaped after Angel Of Mine :( they were just starting to go from good to brilliant

Oh f***! Now all we talk about are these tedious late 90s pop threads where we just get lists of really bad pop records being bandied about.

This is drivel. I know I'll get told "but it wasn't your era" BUT pop in the late 90s and early 00s really was awful. Compare the output of any year from 63 (Beatles started modern pop as far as I'm concerned) to about 96 and 97-2001 loses out big style.

(alright 1974-75 was awful as well!)

Yeah, I agree with you. The sub-genres were all well and good, but pop music during this era was terrible.

Yeah, I agree with you. The sub-genres were all well and good, but pop music during this era was terrible.

It was ok if you liked rnb or commercial dance music (both of which I hate)

Indie was in retreat after the glory years of Britpop and pop was $h!te. It was boy and girl band central.

Terrible, truly terrible period for music.

hmm..apart from ScottyEm's choices, the other songs mentioned here, apart from Smoke City's awesome Underwater Love, read like a list of my least favourite of 97...

Right sod all this $h!te pop we've been hearing about, these are the songs I remember...

1. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

2. Paranoid Android - Radiohead

3. Brimful of Asha - Cornershop (NOT the awful bloody remix that was released the following year)

4. North Country Boy - The Charlatans

5. Nancy Boy - Placebo

6. Disco Machine Gun - Lo-Fidelity Allstars

7. Dry the Rain - The Beta Band

8. Beetlebum - Blur

9. Kowalski - Primal Scream

10. Block Rockin' Beats - The Chemical Brothers

11. Hunter - Bjork

12. Come to Daddy - Aphex Twin

thats only your opinion.... NOT a definitive fact. in fact id go as far as to suggest pop was at its peak 98-02 ... (pop as in pop and not as popular music)

id much sooner listen to pop from 96-06 then 88-95. (but of course it doesnt touch 77-83, 63-68).

this forum is 'retro' and that means 'memories' of our youth, as many here are aged 18-25 they would be just getting into music in the late 90's... therefore they will like that era.

and if you dont like 'listings' threads then please feel free to start a discussion thread !!! after all, its YOUR forum .... new ideas are always welcome :)
