TBH that was mild compared to what I felt like back around 1999-2000. Those feelings do still rise in me from time to time and overcome the usually mild-mannered music freak called Grebo!

I just hate what I (yes it's my opinion) see as watered-down lowest common denominator music. And I feel that a lot of the music from that period was worthless chart pap. It's not always the case that periods are that bad - I think 1998-2001 was that bad because the main alternatives (Dance and Indie) seemed to have burnt out or co-opted by the mainstream so there really wasn't a viable alternative. I see this as a result of record company and manager control which has been negated to some extent by the rise of the mp3 and the subsequent democratisation of music (i.e. everything is available all of the time.)

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think we will ever have a period as poor as 1998-2001. Some genres will be dominant but there will always be something else.

well tbh i have some sympathy with you here... i remember how i felt about the glam era, 72-76 got gradually worse. i feel the same 88-94 too..

but i want all tastes to be catered for here, and whilst i like very few 'manufactured' pop tracks others do. 90's retro is popular here which is fine by me... i just wish there was more 60's interest!

im sure we WILL have more 'bad periods', indie will soon be out of fashion, dance is already in recession..

Funny how different our tastes are. 1998 to 2001 is like my musical paradise, especially cos of dance reaching its peak imo.

agreed

dance being big then is possibly why i liked 98-01 better then other eras in music.

I have liked dance in the past (mainly Ambient and Big Beat - probably coz it was targeted at Indie kids!) but I remember stuff like Fluke and Drum Club and loving it. I also love a lot of stuff that came from the Warp label like Two Lone Swordsmen and LFO.

But the trance stuff from the turn of the millennium leaves me cold. I just tried listening to some on youtube. I guess I prefer what would probably be termed electronica now.

But hey Viva la difference.

I was aged 14 - 17 in these years and while I will agree that dance music and trance reached it's Zenith from a mainstream perspective, nothing can compare to the dance music of 1988 - 1991, although I was aged 5 - 8 in these years and was simply too young too fully absorb these tracks and go out and buy them. I had to rediscover them at a later point and, even though I wasn't there to witness it, I regard this as the pinnacle in dance music.

My favourite genres Trance and 2Step were non existant (pretty much) back then, so I dont appreciate it that time period as much. I'd say 97-02 was my favourite, followed by 92-96 which produced some tremedous classics and eurodance ruled all over the world. As for 88-91, I appreciate it for it being the experimental stage of house, but dont necessarily enjoy it if you know what I mean. Dont really relate to the stuff that was out then, so for me its the time period of dance that I have liked the least. 03-08 has been clearly c**p, and dance has been on going downhill alot since 03, but amongst all the rubbish I still find quite a few songs I've liked during this time period. Is 03-08 more original and experimental than 88-91, obviously not, and I know that. But I've liked more dance songs between 03-08 than 88-01, so I still prefer this time period, although I recognise its in a terrible state.

im with you on this 100%... thats how i see it.

i wasnt taking much notice of dance (as i hated disco in general, thus ever since i didnt really notice dance.... silly me!) until the late 90's when some commercial trance hit the charts, it was only then that i started taking dance more seriously and discovering the many great tracks (un commercial) that i missed.

i am still in this process. :)

Back then I lived in Hawaii, I bought the Tragic Kingdom album in the spring of 1996 and got into Don't Speak right away. And then it was all over the place in the fall.
