'97, '98 and '99 has caused some great debates. So, what about '96? My favourites of the year:

I was mainly into club tunes at the time, hence why most of this list are dance tunes.

1. Stretch & Vern - I'm Alive

One of my favourite club tunes - ever. Great memories

2. E'voke - Arms Of Loren

I remember Radio 1 getting right behind this, so I was shocked it only made #25. Superb tune!

3. Chicane - Offshore

The first hit from my favourite dance act

4. Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life

Storming epic

5. Chemical Brothers - Setting Sun

Fantastic! Well deserved No.1

6. Prodigy - Firestarter

Surely no list of '96 could be complete without this? Loved Breathe too.

7. Todd Terry - Keep On Jumpin' (Rhythm Masters Mix)

CHOON!!!!!!!

8. CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter

Don't know if I prefer the original or the Armand Van Helden mix. Both fantastic.

9. Cathy Dennis - West End Pad

Anyone remember this?

10. Underworld - Born Slippy

Still adore this! Lager lager lager etc

11. Damage - Love II Love

Don't know why I liked this so much.

12. Everything But The Girl - Wrong

Cracking tune!

13. Tina Arena - Sorento Moon

Bit of a guilty pleasure, but its a gorgeous song

14. Alisha's Attic - I Am I Feel

Loved this song. Should have included Indestructable in my '97 list come to think of it.

Worst of the year - well, some tough competition this year! Personally I hated 'Mysterious Girl', 'Flava' and the other one from Peter Andre this year. Didn't like anything Boyzone put out in '96, but surely the biggest waste of plastic had to be The Smurfs - "I Want A Little Puppy"? Still gives me shudders to this day

1996 was quite a good year IMHO and the best for music for ten years, heres my listing of some great tracks that would be on my 'album of.... 1996'.

1 Oasis - 'dont look back in anger' . gotta be an all time anthem and one that if the beatles had released it in '67 could have been THE record of the decade. to me it has everything a damn good pop song should have, one of the best tracks of the 90's.

2 Age of love - 'age of love' a superb dance track that was one of the first 'ibiza' style trance tracks

3 Harvey danger - 'flagpole sitta' a great little upbeat track use as the theme for mitchell and webbs 'peep show'

4 Echobelly - 'dark therapy' utterly love this little known track, superb harmonies, great guitar.

5 Trick baby - 'indie yarn' a real odd track, asian indie, but i like the attempt of trying something different.

6 Cher - 'one by one' i reckon her best since 'gypsies tramps and theives' in 71..

7 Supergrass - 'going out' britpop top group with i reckon their best track.

8 Bluetones - 'marblehead johnson' another britpop classic, superb guitar riff, their best track .

9 Los del rio - 'macarena' lol... well... i went to spain!

10 Stretch n verne presents maddog - 'im alive' a lively dance track

11 BBE - 'seven days and one week' another good ibiza anthem, like its 'sunny' sound, it fits ibiza and sums up that holiday feel...

12Cast - 'sandstorm' britpopers again imho reaching their zenith, love this track.

lol, actually it peaked at #14 the week before Christmas '96. The re-release made #17 the following year.

Sorry to nit-pick

Fair point, although it was the instrumental that charted in 96 which is better than the vocal version, although the vocal was well done, agreed.

96 was a great year for music, personally, so let me get me thinking cap on...

1996 was an excellent year. Each year after this was doesn't come close in my view. A year when dance music was dance music and not inundated with mini-micro genres. When the dance diva's had belting voices and kept their clothes on and even the pop scene was vibrant and healthy.

01: Leftfield "Release The Pressure"... Great track all in all, a shame their second album was dull as dishwater.

02: Dubstar "Not So Manic Now"... A re-issue I think, but I associate Dubstar with 96. Great leftfield-esq pop moment.

03: Alcatraz "Giv Me Luv"... Dark, moody and seductive US house cut that is a bit of a cult classic these days. Total trackage!

04: Bjork "Hyperballd"... The kooky Icelandic songstress's brief moment of intense euphoria! Stunning track!

05: DJ Misjah + DJ Tim "Access"... One of the greatest hard dance anthems for time.

06: Livin' Joy "Don't Stop Movin'"... Joyful piano-laden pop-house choon! Still love this!

07: LL Cool J "Loungin'"... Arrogant; yes. Cool; very.

08: Maxwell "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)"... A real throw-back, leading gem from his highly raved "Urban Hang Suite" album.

09: Charlatans "One To Another"... Classic stuff from Salford/Manc lads, HOORAH!

10: Pulse "The Lover That You Are"... Completely and totally timeless house anthem with knock out vocals. Should've been number one for 10 weeks, but stalled at No. 22!

11: Bedrock "For What You Dream Of"... Titanic-sized house track that was made semi-famous during it's use from synomously-90s flick "Trainspotting".

12: Sneaker Pimps "6 Underground"... Night-time anthem.

And the worse of 96? Easy!... It can only be, it has to be...

Deep Blue Something "Breakfast At Tiffanys" :puke2: :puke2: :puke2: :puke2: :puke2: :puke2:

overall I really disliked 1996 music-wise.

My favourites:

Disco Citizens - Footprint (love the 97 version too)

Chicane - Offshore

No Mercy - Where Do You Go

Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground

Spice Girls - 2 Become 1

Backstreet Boys - Quit Playing Games, We've Got It Going On

Musheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! How could you close my topic?? It didn't even mention 2 unlimited! Was it because that whiney whinger whinge about it because it wasn't "retro" even though it was one of the longest running programs on the BBC so they can stick that in their pipe and smoke it!

Anyway my 1996 chooooooooons

Oasis - Don't look back in anger and many more!

Edited by Feeling naughty

I loved this year (no surprise there really!)

I put up a list on the other thread of 18 or so tracks. This gives me the chance to rectify my mistakes and be more positive about a year at the same time!

So this time with videos, here is Volume 1:

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 So in the year of Britpop I choose a grunge band. Oh well who cares. This is such a groove of a record and I still adore it.

The Bluetones - Slight Return When I oh so badly wanted another Stone Roses record here came this bright and breezy perfection of a tune.

Manic Street Preachers- Kevin Carter All the sweeter for being Richie's last lyric for a single.

Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger THE ANTHEM of 96.

The Prodigy - Firestarter I was astonished when this got to #1. It was like having Ministry get there. Still one of the best records to hit the top.

Babylon Zoo - Spaceman I don't care - I loved this!

Baddiel and Skinner and the Lightning Seeds- Three Lions I will never forget the semi-final against Germany and 100,000 people singing this at Wembley. Still brings a tear to my eye.

Ash- Oh Yeah A fabulous pop song

Lush and Jarvis Cocker- Ciao! Should have been a single - from the Lovelife album.

Super Furry Animals- Hometown Unicorn Welsh wizardry.

Mansun - Wide Open Space Mansun hitting their stride with this gem.

The Folk Implosion - Natural One Cool Tune from Lou Barlow's other band.

Well here's Volume 2

Geneva - No One Speaks Lovely song from a completely forgotten band

Butthole Surfers - Pepper The Surfers go pop but in their own warped way

Screaming Trees – All I Know Epic track from epic last album "Dirt"

Mazzy Star - Rhymes of an Hour Beautiful

Baby Bird – You’re Gorgeous I still think this is an ace lyric

Prodigy – Breathe The other great song from them in 96

Supergrass – Going Out One of the defining bands of the time

Tiger – Race Great song from little remembered band

Echobelly – Dark Therapy Should have been massive

Echobelly – Dark Therapy Should have been massive

MEB_Q__jO5o

Suede – Trash Superb comeback song

Rocket from the Crypt – On a Rope So love this – album’s good too!

Chemical Brothers – Setting Sun Another brilliant #1

The instrumental was always better anyway

Sadly this is the case with every dance track re-released with an inappropriate vocal slapped on top. The only time it worked was that Fragma tune which took two $h!t tunes and put them together to make one slightly less $h!t.

The following have been destroyed with stupid new vocals...

Guru Josh - Infinity

Liquid - Sweet Harmony (not sure what the 'new version' was even called)

Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life (HOW DARE THEY!)

Gat Decor - Passion

Layo & Bushwacka - Love Story

Even Robert Miles' 'Children' was made worse by being sloppily mixed with a random acapella.

dont agree with that one m8.... i think the vocals add to the already mixed up track (heavy on the sample for devo - 'mongoloid')
