The Pet Shop Boys are to receive the outstanding contribution to music award at the 2009 Brits.

The band will also play live at the event, which takes place on Wednesday February 18.

Brits committee chairman Ged Doherty says, “Since their first BRIT Award over 20 years ago, Neil and Chris have produced a fantastic body of work with songs that truly were the soundtrack to a whole generation’s lives. The Pet Shop Boys have since become one of the most influential groups of the modern era and are deserving recipients of the award.”

Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have sold 50m records since they signed to Parlophone in 1985 with four No 1 singles, 22 top 10 hits and 39 top 30 singles.

Previous recipients of the award include Paul McCartney, Oasis, U2, Paul Weller, Tom Jones, Sting. David Bowie, Eurythmics, The Beatles and The Who.

Yes, Yes, Yes.... about time, my favourite band of the 80s, a well deserved band to receive the Brit Award.

I know its not hardly chart related but the core chart members don't visit the other forums.

Apart from David Bowie this is the first artist I appreciate getting this ward..

All hail the pet Shop Boys..

The Sam Taylor Wood single is released today - classic PSB produced track.

I'm really pleased about this. They seem to have been overlooked in these past few years so its about time they got noticed again. I wonder if it will coincide with the new album :w00t: :w00t:

It will, which is why I think PSB chose to accept the award this time. Neil Tennant has been on record in the past as saying they've been offered the Lifetime Achievement gong before but rejected it due to "too many conditions attached" (no idea what he meant by that!).

Anyway, as a fan I'm very pleased with the news. Their PopArt collection will probably re-enter the album chart and it should bode well for their new material, which is due out around the time of the Brits.

Funny that, only a few days on here I said they should be the ones to get it this time :D VERY well deserved! :cheer:
I was convinced it would be Westlife :puke2: what with it being 10th anniversary of their first single and before any1 says even though their Irish U2 got it one year

So unbelievably well deserved, I hope it brings them the needed publicity to get the success they used to have and still deserve.

Depeche Mode deserve an outstanding contribution award too.

and about time too

Their body of work is just outstanding...and they've never, ever been given the credit they deserve for their truly fantastic songwriting. Even with their lukewarm-received last album, they were releasing classic singles like Minimal and Numb - both of which were crazily only minor hits.

I don't think anyone can say, hand on heart, that there's not a single Pet Shop Boys track they don't like..... they've been trailblazers with things like remixes, musical trends, packaging... they always have their ears to the ground for the latest great new musical trends/remixers, and they were pioneers of the video, too, always working with up-and-coming directors and making some videos that changed the art form.

Apart from Bowie, I'd say the most deserving of all the recipients. Let's hope Depeche Mode and Kate Bush finally accept their Outstanding Contribution awards soon, too.

That's fantastic news. I'm a big fan. I think it's exaggeration to say everyone likes every single one of their songs by the way though!

I actually meant there can't be anyone who doesn't like at least one PSB single ;)
