I've been wanting Leona to work with Timbaland for such a long time. The last couple of years really scream the Timbaland sound. I wouldn't want him producing the entire album, but I'm hoping he can provide her with a few hot tracks.

I've got a good feeling about album #2. Everyone seems to want to work with her. I think we'll see more of her personality, too. It won't just be full of ballads, because I just don't think that's who she is.

From the Daily Star so don't take as gospel:

LEONA TO FOLLOW GIRLS ALOUD

Leona Lewis is turning to the brains behind Girls Aloud’s genius pop songs for her second album.

Music Week’s producer of the year receipients Xenomania penned five tracks for the follow-up to the Hackney gal’s multi million selling Spirit.

Songwriter Miranda Cooper told me:

“We are not going to change Leona’s style but it’s interesting for us to do something downbeat, tragic songs with a twist”.

Miranda and Xenomania other half Brian Higgins also won Music Sync of the Year for Gabriella Climi’s Sweet About me.

Leona's in the studio with Timbaland. :D From James Fauntleroy's Twitter who works with Timbaland a lot and he actually wrote No Air for Jordin:

fauntleroy: is on the way to this timbo session (for leona) so beam me luck...

Exciting!

Parts of Spirit have an urban style like Bleeding Love, Take A Bow and I'm You. I'm expecting the song she did with Justin to be a similar vein to them.

I'm sorry but I dont see any urban traits in those songs.

She was flopping hard before Emancipation of Mimi which actually rejuvenated her career. It saved Mariah, who's had urban influences since like 1995.

I'm hoping Justin can help Leona crack the urban market. I don't think they'll go that urban though. The execs know where she'll sell, but I'm hoping they release a hot uptempo for single #1 off her sophomore album. Another ballad could kill her in the U.S.

Anyway, Leona's one of the only artists I feel like I cannot wait to hear new music. I'm so pumped... ALREADY.

Mariah admittingly did well with emancipation, but what else has done well for her? Virtually very little, in the UK anyway. Her voice sounds so bland as well on many of the newer songs. I'd be happy enough if they do 1 or 2 new songs with timbaland but please - not a whole album. That would be a complete disaster and I will boycott buying the album then.

There are small parts of urban put into those songs. ;)

Really? Not even in I'm You especially? And Bleeding Love has the heavy drum beat, it did well on Urban radio in the US too so they liked it. ;)

Well if you're talking Mimi and beyond, it got her 3 #1's in the US, her highest charting single in the UK since God knows when, the year Mimi was released she sold well over a million records in the UK with the GH being re-released because Mimi made people interested in her again. Plus E=MC2 was her highest charting UK album in over a decade. ;) The latest album was just managed terribly... Wrong singles, ill-timed marriage, very little promotion beyond the first single etc. As for her vocals - that's down to personal taste I suppose. ^_^

As for Leona, I don't think her sophomore attempt is going to be Hard Candy Vol. 2 which is what a lot of people seem to be imagining this is going to turn out like, I just think a lot of people have picked up on Spirit being pretty ballad heavy and she's trying to include more to appeal to the US and give her fans some more uptempo's and as much as he's been way overexposed you have to admit Timbaland is the way to go if you're after a club banger... I'm sure both Clive Davis and Simon Cowell have their fingers on the pulse on the culture of music on both sides of the pond. Cowell was smart enough to give the fans what they wanted in a studio version of "Run" anyway. I guarantee this album will be amazing, just expanding her horizons a little more than she did on Spirit.

I think people should be seeing this as a positive thing, before Spirit was released she was just another talent show winner and now the biggest producers in the world are working with her. As much as people seem to despise Simon Cowell, I really don't, he does right by Leona and won't allow her to do something that's going to alienate her UK fanbase and thus I have total faith in Simon Cowell, Clive Davis and of course - Leona. :D

Great post Kelly. :D I agree, Simon will protect her and not let them mould her too urban because he knows what works for her especially in the UK.

Well said. I think people are ignorant if they think she's going to ditch pop music. She needs some R&B, urban influenced tracks to help her stay fresh in the U.S. First and foremost, she's a pop star, and her management are not going to backtrack on the success already achieved (especially in the UK, who love her choir-backed pop tracks). She needs to appeal to a new demo, and I think it's only positive she's experimenting with contemporary producers.

As for Mariah, it's a joke to say she did "admitingly well" because she broke a number of records on U.S radio with "We Belong Together" and spent 14 (non-consecutive) weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. She came back with a bang and rejuvenated her winding career worldwide. And anyway, people are deluded if they think she "sold out" and started doing R&B with Emancipation because she's been doing R&B since the beginning of her career.
