What were the total sales for American life exactly?
Its also her lowest selling studio album in America but should pass American Life shortly. American Life sold roughly 675,000 and so far Hard Candy is on 665,000.
American Life will always remian as her lowest selling record. No doubt Hard Candy will surpass it eventually!!

I think the problem with hard candy is the urban style of music may have alienated alot of true Madonna fans. I'm a massive Madge fan but this is the first album of hers which I havent bought. The style just doesnt suit her and the tracks are weak. I didnt want to support an album which was purely made for the American market and doesnt represent Madonna properly.

I strongly disagree.

Although the album has been produced by hip hop/rn'b producers, both Madonna and her collaborators have somewhat managed to retain some pop elements infused in tracks such as Give it 2 Me and Miles Away amongst others. Madonna is aware that she is a dance/pop artist and she's carefully crafted material that consists of both dance/pop and r'nb.

I'm not a fan of hip hp/r'nb myself and i would never have bought this CD had it been purely that but thanks to Madonna's pure genius in mixing musical sounds and trends, the album is a fine selection of a wider range of musical genres. ;)

American Life sales compared to Hard Candy:

US: 675,000 - 669,331

UK: 335,115 - 312,000

I'm confident that Hard Candy will surpass American life's sales at the end of the year. In the US, Madonna still has a few stadium dates left and with the upcoming thanks giving and holiday season, i'm sure it'll hit the 700k mark!

In the UK, Miles Away is as we all know, the next and possibly final single. Should this prove to be a hit, it could very well breath some life into the album and help sell a few more thousands!

So, its not over just yet! :)

yes, I'm sure in the US the album will surpass AL's sales but I'm not sure though with the UK.

HC slipped to # 157 in the mids :( But Miles Away's release could boost the sales of the album and maybe Christmas too so it might catch up with it.

'Miles Away' is also the UK's #4 pre-ordered single according to the HMV.com chart as of today! Fingers crossed!

ok, i'm officially worred about Miles Away  It's out in a week and i've not seen or heard any promotion for it whatsoever. Has is been on the radio atall??

She's got loads of fans who will buy it regardless which usually means a decent chart position without massive exposure (e.g Love Profusion) but with only 1 CD available it won't be as easy for us to give her enough sales for a decent chart position.

well why do you think its sold so badly then? I have alot of friends who are Madonna fans and they can't stand her new sound. I think its a deliberate ploy by the record company to release a more americanised album to fit in with their market. I'm really glad it hasnt sold well as the songs are weak and don't show off Madonna's true potential. Also, Madonna usually reinvents herself but this time it seems like she's jumped on the band wagon and done what alot of other people are doing at present. There is enough of this urban sounding tripe around at the moment, without Madonna trying to do it.

Mmm so why hasn't it sold well? Well why hasn't any decent pop album of 2008 sold well? Mariah could've even manage 2 million worldwide, Madge just did slightly over 3. The music business is suffering, its not so much because of the content of the album. You say you mates hated it, i can argue and say my mates loved it! Its a matter of opinion. Hard Candy hasn't done as well because of the overall market, not because it was c**p! And besides, its done well according to the world music awards and the official statistics where HC is the overall 3rd best-selling album of 2008 and the best-selling international album! :)

Hard Candy's album sales don't have much to do with the overall market in my opinion. You can't entirely blame that on the reason this album will probably end up in the bottom 2 least selling albums of her entire career in the UK. The market hasnt retracted that much when Duffy can sell 1.3 million in approx 9 months and the likes of Rihanna, Amy Winehouse, Leona & Kings of Leon are still selling consistently well. Lets face it - Madonna's new sound just isnt half as popular as some of her other stuff.

Also - Mariah's album isnt a pop album neither - its very urban influenced.
