Posted November 6, 200816 yr ...I loved this so much when I downloaded it, I bought it yesterday - and haven't stopped playing it since. Some might have been put off the new Grace album by the avant-garde single Corporate Cannibal - but rest assured, there's no other tracks like this on the album (I really loved it - I know many didn't). Here's the album microsite: http://www.thehurricaneiscoming.com/ The rest is a real return to her heyday - and it's probably her finest album.... mainly chilled and downbeat, there's songs that could easily have come from her Nightclubbing era - lush, spacious production, sultry, velvety vocals and to be honest, there really isn't a duff track - it's one of my albums of 2008...if not THE album of 2008. There's a tribute to the late, great producer Alex Sadkin on the album, too, which replicates his stunning work on tracks like Private Life....the echo-y calypso sounds that he pioneered.... all here. Here's a few tracks... seems only the very slow ballads are on YouTube - the title track, produced and starring Tricky, is awesome. Other notable names...Sly and Robbie, Brian Eno, and quite a few I can't remember  I'm Crying (Mother's Tears) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=g67oxEiuJ5k Sunset Sunrise http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZxVAJzWKxI&...feature=related New single Williams' Blood on Jools Holland... a GREAT performance http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ixMYI3Z7m0c&...feature=related This is Life http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CrvZTxoStbM and a fantastic performance from last year of Pull Up To The Bumper http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3s7eRALNFZc&...feature=related is anyone here going to see her in January? We're going to the Bristol show - for anyone that hasn't ever seen her live... you MUST - it's an experience.... total icon - thank God there's still artists like Grace Jones :-* Anyway, Hurricane... check out the weird cover, too - Grace making chocolate moulds of her head in Thorntons' factory in Derbyshire ;D http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm76/blissfulignorance_2008/grx.jpg Check the album out.... it's really, really pretty phenomenal...
November 6, 200816 yr She's awful. Why's she trying to be so fierce when we have such amazing artists with attitude like Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Kate Nash? She's a has-been who should have stopped making music 20 years ago. No-one cares and she's awful compared to the amazing talents of today.
November 6, 200816 yr Lolz jake. Yes, Hurricane is a good album. I really like I'm Crying and William's Blood. I don't think it's a great album (yet) because I found that contrary to what you thought Russ, a lot of it is incredibly similar. Just like CC, many of the songs are minimal, stripped-back avant-garde numbers which take a bit of getting into... but I'm sure it will grow. Also the cover is wonderful and she was nothing short of legendary on Jonathon Ross a couple of weeks back. She's hilarious! Is she touring the country? I'd go to Manchester if it was cheap enough, though I don't know any of my friends would go.
November 7, 200816 yr Author she's playing in January... 2 London Roundhouse gigs and a smattering of other dates... I'm off to see her in Bristol. I think the album does need to grow on you.... but I really, really love it. Production's gorgeous.... I think you'd love her back catalogue, Jark - Nightclubbing in particular...but you really can't go wrong with her Island Life best of - it's mid-price, too. Jake - you naughty boy - carry on like this and I'll get Grace onto you...and she can be brutal.... as you can see here in her infamous interview with 80s chatshow host Russell Harty :D BPUhUWC2LaA (8.00 - 8.37 mins in)
November 7, 200816 yr Of course one kids. 'Hurricane' is fantastic. At near-60 someone can produce such a contextually-rich, emotive and relevant album is commendable. SHE is the relevant Madonna-type figure of this musical generation.
November 9, 200816 yr Hi there. What's specialist about Grace? Surely she should be in pop or dance. I would say Retro but she doesn't deserve to be confined to that bracket. I love the new album, but I love all of her stuff too. In fact I bought Slave To The Rhytm when it was re-released in 1994 - when I was 10! But I only really got into her in the last couple of years as the other half is a major fan and has EVERYTHING by her, from I Need A Man onwards. Going to see her in Manchester in February. Can't wait. It's a pity the album is probably going to just miss out on the top 40 this wee, but hopefully Williams Blood can help that if it starts picking up airplay...
November 9, 200816 yr Author None of the supermarkets or Woolworths are even bothering stocking Hurricane - so I'm not surprised it's gonna miss the charts. And radio wouldn't touch Corporate Cannibal (well, it's hardly commercial) and Williams' Blood - hmm... I think even this may be too 'out-there' for Radio 2...and she aint Madonna and she's over 40 - so no chance with dull dull dull Radio 1. I'd say she deserves to be in Specialist - she's a singer-songwriter who doesn't chart, isn't 'pop' and it's an insult to lump her with the Retro acts.... as ever, Miss Jones is difficult to pigeonhole - and thank God for that Your partner's got good taste! ;) Me and mine are off to Bristol in January for her show there - should be incredible if the Meltdown gig was anything to go by. I'd love to see her at Roundhouse..... what a venue that looks.
November 9, 200816 yr I guess you're right, Specialist will do, especially since it seems to be synonymous to Reggae on this board, and that's a genre that Grace has worked in a fair bit. Thing is, I think Williams Blood is really catchy. Kind of lyrically difficult, like most of her stuff, but then again, what's Pull Up To The Bumper about? ;) Radio 1 is dull these days I agree, but I could kind of see Radio 2 picking up on it still, and maybe some of the more open minded independent stations... The Roundhouse does look cool, but Manchester is probably going to be the biggest venue of the tour. We considered going to The Sage in Gateshead, because we live in the North East, but on the day tickets were released, that date seemed to go off the radar, and only reappear a couple of days later. So we decided we'd do Manchester and make a weekend of it :)
November 9, 200816 yr So we decided we'd do Manchester and make a weekend of it :) Best city in the world, y'know. :D I'd love to see Grace Jones, even non-fans would be in for a real treat. I like parts of her career although I've struggled to get into her latest single, it just doesn't work for me. I've only seen a luke-warm review in Q magazine so far...
November 9, 200816 yr Author I've only seen a luke-warm review in Q magazine so far... Unless you're U2, Coldplay or Snow Patrol, Q give lukewarm reviews to everything.... what a boooooring magazine that is these days.... Hurricane is magnificent - Q just don't 'get' it ;)
November 9, 200816 yr Unless you're U2, Coldplay or Snow Patrol, Q give lukewarm reviews to everything.... what a boooooring magazine that is these days.... Hurricane is magnificent - Q just don't 'get' it ;) You're probably right, although I've found Q to be fair in the past. Bring back Select magazine, that was a good read.
November 9, 200816 yr I'm so bored of Q. Mojo was good until a couple of years ago. Nowadays the only music magazines I regularly buy are Plan B and Shindig. Anyway, the album's in at 42, which isn't bad. Top 15 on iTunes though, I wonder why so different?
December 13, 200816 yr I'm so bored of Q. Mojo was good until a couple of years ago. Nowadays the only music magazines I regularly buy are Plan B and Shindig. yeah shindig is full of interesting stuff..i've started enjoying reading that and finding out about all random psych stuff...Mojo's alright I guess - tho its sometimes to be a mix of stuff that should go in q and stuff that should be in classic rock and anyway the CD's are generally decent (tho I guess the word or paste is probs the best for their cd compilations).. btw any else heard the shortwave set's cover of slave to the rhythm?
December 20, 200816 yr I guess you're right, Specialist will do, especially since it seems to be synonymous to Reggae on this board, and that's a genre that Grace has worked in a fair bit. Yeah - Don't riddim powerhouse and taxi gang dudes Sly & Robbie contribute quite a bit to the new album as well...(and isnt it time for a Chaka Demus and Pliers revival? Jack Radics can be invited too  ) None of the supermarkets or Woolworths are even bothering stocking Hurricane - so I'm not surprised it's gonna miss the charts. And radio wouldn't touch Corporate Cannibal (well, it's hardly commercial) and Williams' Blood Got Williams' Blood the other day - about 10 mixes for about £3 on iTunes - which means that it could be viewed as a 10 track album...which probs could be compared to her ZTT album project ...which i think was just varations of Slave to the Rhythm over and over again (missing from the boxset tho)
December 20, 200816 yr What box set? I agree that the Williams Blood digital single is kind of like a mini album. The Aeroplane mix is the best, though I quite like the Greg Wilson version. Really dissapointed it didn't even chart top 200 though :(
