Chart commentary - An untried Democrat is elected US President on a wave of hope after eight years of unpopular Republican rule. In Britain, a beleaguered Labour government battles against financial crisis. In sport, a charismatic young Briton wins the Formula 1 world championship. Yes, you could be forgiven for thinking the world had slipped back to 1976. And in the top 20 this week, maybe it has! For an obscure single by a German experimental rock band has toppled reality tv darlings Girls Aloud to take the number one spot. Orignally recorded in 1976, 'I Want More' by Can inexplicably flew under the Radio Newtown radar on its single re-issue in 2006, but two years later, thanks to a surfing-style YouTube video, the song has flown up the charts within four weeks to get to the top spot.

And that's not all for 70s fans. 'Let Your Love Flow', a country number from 76 by the Bellamy Brothers, shoots into the top five thanks to a bizarre, high-budget tv advert featuring an office worker taking a water slide home from work.

Fans of the 80s sound are not forgotten though. Anglo-Amercan outfit Crazy P (the official name of whom we cannot print) may be bang upto date, but there is a definite 80s tinge to their current single, 'Stop Space Return', which climbs to number 4 and looks set to battle the two 76-hits at the top next week.

Such a reliance on retro suggests that the current crop of new releases may not be up to the mark. Certainly, Beyonce's number thirteen position with her new hit is a major surprise, and the only other newcomers to the Top 20 are slow growing October releases from Snow Patrol and Adele. But this looks set to be a pre-Christmas lull, as the big guns of modern music such as Take That look for chart positions over forthcoming weeks...

This week's chart...
