Number One: the Rise and Fall of the charts

1st of 2 parts.

Paul Gambaccini assesses the current state and relevance of the music charts. From Al Martino in 1952 to The Ting Tings in 2008, this two-parter traces the birth and rise of the charts both here and in the States, with a look at the cultural explosion of the 1960s and 70s, the mythology and power of the Christmas number one, and the future of the charts. Featuring input from those who have presented Radio 1’s weekly countdown show and a selection of chart-topping obscurities.

That sounds really interesting. Love Paul Gambaccini, such a legend
Love to listen to this, but it's on at an awkward time on a Saturday evening, when the X Factor is on, humbug

Well you can record either of them, or the documentary will be bbci player for 7 days.

Oh, didn't notice that with the time. But frankly now Laura and Ruth have gone I don't care that much...

I will definitely listen to this, even if it is on the BBCi Player.

Oh god. This or X-Factor? This or X-Factor?

oooh thanks for this - will listen on play back. Seriously tempted to do my dissertation on the charts and how significant they are to people today - this would be great info!

 so big big thanks :cheer:

Just listened to this - great show. A few factual mistakes (since when were there Monday midweeks?) but apart from that it's a really interesting listen.

Produced by Joe Meek? Huh? Didn't he kill himself in 1967?
