I reckon he will be featured in next year's Xmas episode at the very end. Just have to see what happens.

The connection to Billie Piper was a bit ironic, when he appeared in the Sally Mysteries, that's where I saw him acting in before.

I hope they cast Michelle Ryan as his companion, (aka Zoe Slater from Eastenders)

Before anyone says he's too young - if you go by that mentality, then you're just saying what Craig and Mushy were saying in he-hashed words.

I'm not gonna judge him before i've seen him actually act. I only watched Confidential briefly, but he did say that he was going to study the role over the next 6 months or so, so maybe he could thrive in the role who knows? I would have liked Patterson Joesph too, but at least he'll be back in Survivors this year! :D

Dr Who is meant to be a bit eccentric

Take a look at this pic of Patterson Joseph, does he look eccentric and a bit off the wall ? http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45157000/jpg/_45157056_joseph_bbc226b.jpg

No, he looks rugged, mean, he would be great playing police and military roles and so on, can you really picture him based on that playing an eccentric ? whereas Matt Smith does have that eccentric look about him

He had a very slight air of arrogance about him I thought but I'll wait and see I 'spose. Yeh, Michelle Ryan would be a brilliant companion. Love me some herrr.

But looks can be deciving. Patterson Joesph is a great actor. Eccelston was hardly off the road and eccentric, but he was brilliant as the Doctor. Patterson Joesph would have been in the same vein as Eccelston was imo.

Matt Smith looks like some guy whose been to public school and looks like he's been under the knife (and he's got a mammoth size nose) but like I say looks can be deciving. :heehee: I think he'll be alright as the Doctor, and whether he'll be right, wrong, attrocious or fantastic we won't know for a year and a half.

It is a triumph of common sense over political correctness and amazingly the BBC have not been swayed by political correctness and quotas and have chosen the right person for the job

Even aside from my previous posts about Dr Who tradition over 50 years Patterson Joseph would have been totally the wrong guy for the job, he is a rugged tough guy and placing him in Dr Who who has traditionally been an eccentric would have been as daft as casting Vinnie Jones as Hamlet

If I wanted a tough cop I would cast Patterson Joseph, if I wanted an army colonel I would cast Patterson Joseph, if I wanted a gangland heavy I would cast Patterson Joseph but getting him to play an eccentric would have been the daftest move ever

As an old timer of Dr Who I am probably a bit of a dinosaur compared with someone who has been watching Dr Who for a couple of years, I was bought up on Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker and so on so very much like to see my Dr's in that kind of mould, a younger person would probably be more used to say Ecclestone if that was near on their first Dr and be more adaptable as to what Dr who is but being bought up on Pertwee and Baker etc I guess I judge every candidate by them lol

I think it says more about yourself judging someone by their looks.

Having watched his fantastic comedic & at times disturbingly bonkers turns in the comedies Hyperdrive, The Peep Show & The Mitchell & Webb Look it is easy to see why Digitalspy's Dr Who forum is in near melt down lamented the decision NOT to pick Patterson Joseph for the role because his acting back catalogue ensures that he would have nailed the part.

Having seen Matt Smith in The Ruby In The Smoke & The Shadow In The North where I personally thought he was out acted by Billie Piper, Julie Walters, Julian Rhind-Tutt & JJ Feild (now he would have made a good unknown Dr Who), I'm not at all convinced.

But the casting of Catherine Tate & her subsequently acting performance means that the jury will remain out until series 5 starts in 2010, but from what I've seen him previously suggests he is too Sylvestor McCoy for my liking.

But I wish him all the very best of luck that he pulls off the role emphatically well.

I grew up watching Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, I was hoping Jon's son Sean was considered for the role to be honest, it be the perfect epitaph to fill his father's shoes, otherwise I would have favoured Alan Davies if he was even considered as well, picking a younger Dr. has got a larger scope and big shoes to fill, just have to wait till spring 2010 to see how well he takes to the role. Paterson Joseph wasn't my first choice, but I was willing to give him a chance if he was picked for the role.

I'm still not convinced Matt Smith can pull it off, its such a large role for a long established series.

Amen to that.

Sean Pertwee would have been my first (realistic) choice out of any actor going, certainly UK based.

But I would have had no problem if a great female actress took the role (i.e. the likes of Imelda Staunton; Miranda Richardson; Catherine McCormack; Jessica Hynes; Julia Sawalha; Anna Friel; Minnie Driver; Samantha Morton; etc). The same way I would be delighted if the new Doctor was a non caucasian actor (of the calibre of Colin Salmon; Paterson Joseph; Chiwetel Ejiofor or even the brilliant Thandie Newton & Meera Syal).

I think that anyone who could have an issue with the alien character that can change its form (as this concept was established back in the 1960s that the Doctor could theoretically change its sex or skin colour) is being incredibly narrow minded.

After all the character is not stuck with a generic or historic form like James Bond or Othello for goodness sake.

Meera Syal  Now that i would have liked to have seen. I definatly would have liked them to have gone for a female doctor at some point aswell, though i wonder if they companion would atomatically have to be male though -_-
I'm quite pleased with the choice, he seemed quite right for the role in his interviews - the hair, the general odd look which most Dr Whos seem to have, and even though he's not conventionally good-looking I could see him becoming something of a heartthrob. ^_^
Amen to that.

What gets me though, I remember in an interview Sean Pertwee was asked, if a position for Dr. Who was vacant, would he accepted the role, and he said yes, I love to fill my father's legacy, and to be not considered for the role, sounds as if the producers were toe tapping around him.

now we need to decide what causes the Doctor to regenerate from David to Matt

Daleks

Sea Devils

The Master

Donna

Bad Wolf

A new enemy (unlikely seeing as they're RTD specials)

I have to say, I hope to see lot less Daleks and Cybermen in the 2010 series'. I can't help but think that after so long, they've overstayed their welcome, and there can surely be only so many ways to bring them back...

you read my mind :P

i dont know this geezer, so ill await judgement, however, at 26 will he really be able to pull off the 'wise eccentric knowall' that the role demands? im not so sure.

i grew up with hartnell, troughton, pertwee, baker ... i agree that sean would have fitted the part 'looks' wise at least. agree about smith being able to pull it off.

who says?..... if thats so true then why is yet another dr who been cast as a white male? before anyone chips in with the 'shapeshifting alien' argument, dr who was never meant to be anything other then what he is... but then again ive watched the show from the first episode so my image of dr who is pretty fixed, and i make no apology for that! :)

miranda richardson might pull off the role, shes certainly eccentric enough...lol.. but no, i disagree that most females could pull it off in quite the same way...... but i guess you could argue that most females on that list would have been better then sylvester mc coy! couldnt argue against that!

Totally agree.... Patterson Joseph would have been an exellent Doctor, DESPITE the skin colour argument.... Joseph is really good at playing pretty off-the-wall characters... Just dont ask him to do an American accent is all....

Funny you should mention Julian Rhind Tutt..... Another potentially good Doctor there IMO..... Matt Smith..??? Who the fukk is he....? I watched those things he was in that you mentioned, and frankly, I'm hard pushed to even remember him... Yeah, he's a real charismatic dude, really memorable.....

This really could be the worst casting decision since Bond was taken over by George fukkin' Lazenby.....

Thank god you're not a bloody casting director then mate because you've clearly never seen Patterson Joseph actually play the pretty off-the-wall, strange and almost "disturbing" characters he is more than capable of playing... Naah, you'd have the bloke playing "generic, loud, black army sergeant" or "generic, loud, black police liuetenant" all the time.....

Patterson Joseph could absolutely NAIL The Doctor in a heartbeat, 'ruggedness' (blackness..?) or not, I have absolutely no doubt about it....

Last night I watched BBC2 new detective drama Moses Jones for the sole of purpose of seeing Matt Smith in a major role.

Matt Smith in 'Moses Jones'

I have got to say on that shows evidence this guy does not possess the charisma or is even close to the calibre of the two most recent Doctors required. Whilst his mockney David Beckham type accent was annoying. If he is half as bad as this portraying the Doctor, then the franchise is in deep do do. Especially if the 6/4 fav for the assistant role Michelle Ryan is successfully employed in Series 5 in 2010.
