Posted December 7, 200816 yr Chart commentary: With only three more charts to go till Christmas, Take That are battling manfully to keep hold of the top spot until then with 'Greatest Day'. With huge potential to be Christmas number one, the current hit from the Manchester quartet only has to hold on for two more weeks in order to claim the honour, denied them on two memorable occasions, when 'Rule The World' missed out last year, and the infamous occasion in 1993 when the public collectively judged Mark Owen's 'Babe' to be musically inferior to Mr. Blobby. But some of the other contenders for Christmas number one are already making their presence felt in the higher reaches. Recent Buzzjack Song Contest winner Lenka climbs two places to number two with her jolly number, perfect for the carefree spirit of the season, while more specifically geared to Christmas is Gabriella Cilmi's Co-Op Advert soundtrack song 'Warm This Winter'. This cover of a Connie Francis track climbs nine places to number three today. The Killers at last get a top five place, while borrowing from O-Zone seems to have helped TI and Rihanna as they eventually climb into the top ten. Further down the chart, as 'Forgive Me' drops out, 'Run' by Leona Lewis is the highest new entry at thirteen, while Oasis' decision to finally go all out as a Beatles tribute act seems to be bringing some reward, as 'I'm Outta Time', up to 14, looks set to become their biggest hit in three years. The excellent vocalist Daniel Merriweather must be wondering when he will get major credit on a chart hit, having played second fiddle to Mark Ronson on his number one 'Stop Me', he now backs up the rapping skills of Londoner Wiley in the chart at seventeen... and what threatens to be the first of many Christmas interlopers sees Johnny Mathis croon his way to number twenty. Now, only two more charts to Christmas - who will be in for Christmas number one? It's anyone's guess, but Radio Newtown will be back with a look at the main contenders yet to enter the top twenty later in the week. December 9, 200816 yr Author And as the battle to be Christmas number one in the Radio Newtown Top 20 hots up, let's have a look at some of the contenders who look set to enter the charts next week in the hope of getting seven days' start in the race. German Schlager-musik singing beauty Helene Fischer has already had three number ones in the chart, including the summer's Lass mich in dein Leben, which made it all the more surpising during the autumn, when Mal ganz erlich stalled at No 21. But in time for the festive season, she releases 'Heilige Nacht' ('Holy Night'), which shows some of the true meaning of Christmas, and already looks like a possible challenger as early as Sunday. 9ZJsj7qX4V0 In stark contrast, a more traditional British Christmas is offered by Liverpool band The Wombats, who bring us 'Is This Christmas?'. Although many people may think this band are nothing more than a Scouse McFly with street-cred, there's no denying that this latest release is the nearest Christmas 2008 is going to get to a Slade-type rabble rouser! QQAmwRM-vXU Cult American band King of Prussia are already hovering under the Top 20 with 'Shades of Hippiedom', and look set to make a big climb on Sunday. They were right on cue during the Autumn, 'Misadventures of the Campaign Kids' topping the chart for five weeks at the height of the US Presidential Election campaign. Their Christmas chart contender is in the same distinctive style, but lack of a Christmas edge may be a disadvantage in this battle. z_H6O9F2AHk With another raft of releases expected in Christmas week itself, these three contenders may well be overtaken themselves, and of course, they have to challenge the early runners Take That, Lenka and Gabriella Cilmi. It does promise, though, to be an exciting battle, in a chart that has rarely seen the much vaunted 'X Factor Winner' dominate proceedings, unlike the listings of some other, inferior radio stations we could mention... :P
