December 27, 200816 yr Author 018 Rihanna 'Don't Stop The Music' (05-04-03-05-09-10-05-12-16-20-17-21-24-29-32) http://4.music.bigpond-images.com/images/AlbumCoverArt/84/XXL/Dont-Stop-The-Music.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsRWpK4pf90 Even though I, like many, have suffered from an overload of Rihanna this year it's obvious why there's been such an overload, its that with songs like this she's so damn good! Unlike most of her songs which I like I've never once got bored with it, it's utterly fantastic and probably my favourite party song of the year. It just never gets boring. One of the best uses of sampling this year too.
December 27, 200816 yr Author 017 Dizzee Rascal ft Calvin Harris & Chrome 'Dance Wiv Me' (09-06-07-10-20-27-32) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41LTik-ldUL._SL500_AA280_.jpg Dizzee Rascal has always been an act I've loved, however much I've sometimes not liked doing so. But really, he's extremely good at what he does and he's been making decent singles for years now. And I do feel this is very much his best, just edging 'Flex' and 'Stand Up Tall'. Even Calvin Harris is fantastic on it. If you'd said to me a year ago that Dizzee Rascal would have a UK number one this year I'd have laughed in your face, just like I would if you said in August when 'I Kissed A Girl' was number one if you'd said Katy Perry would have an entry in the top 20 of my end of year chart............
December 27, 200816 yr Author 016 Katy Perry 'Hot N Cold' (26-16*) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ddcUcrBXL._SL500_AA240_.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-LhyAVzDBI [ft Yelle] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgmifTnJtds [innerpartyststem Remix] Without a doubt this is the shock of the year for me. 'Ur So Gay' - vile. 'I Kissed A Girl' - the worst single of the year. 'Self Inflicted' - barely any better. It's hardly a surprise that the thought of hearing a new Katy Perry single was one of dread. I avoided it for some time but obviously with someone so big you can only do that for so long. I first heard it out and thought it was quite good, then again and it was better. I soon realised that it was actually quite good. I downloaded it and it's so catchy, infact it's more than that. It's a slice of pop genius and if that wasn't good enough the Innerpartysystem is great dancing it up and there's a version with the ever fabulous Yelle! It may only have reached number 16 in my chart so far (the same as this) however it's one of two contenders to be the first number one of '09, the other yet to come.
December 27, 200816 yr It may only have reached number 16 in my chart so far (the same as this) however it's one of two contenders to be the first number one of '09, the other yet to come. Surely not Lady GaGa?! :drama:
December 28, 200816 yr Author 015 Kings of Leon 'Sex On Fire' (31-09-03-02-06-09-12-19-26-17-18-12-15-22-28-36-34*) http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/1725574.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHhhcKxflMY A band I've always rather liked I've seen them getting bigger and generally better as time has passed. I never expected them to be quite such a success in the UK however writing songs like this they completely deserve it. It's a dj's dream too, they've finally got something to play alongside 'Mr Brightside'. One of the more surprising acts to reach number one this year, but this song reaching the top really isn't. December 28, 200816 yr Author 014 Gang Gang Dance 'House Jam' (38-32-26-15-04-01*[/b] http://thesocialregistry.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/07/10/tsr050.jpg Taking the top spot from The Futureheads to become my first number one of 2009 this is something that's grown on me immensely over the past few weeks. It could easily be described as weird, and it's certainly not for everyone, but their experimental indie, electronica reminds me very much of Massive Attack.
December 28, 200816 yr Author 013 Vampire Weekend 'A-Punk' (19-04-02-03-04-07-12-09-12-15-18-25-35-38) http://vampweek.com/wp-content/uploads/image/380f_1(1).jpg Released at the beginning of the year this was a far bigger hit than its modest #55 position suggests. They may have been incredily hyped by everyone throughout the year and whilst it may not be completely deserved its little indie-pop gems like this that make the hype seem completely understandable. It's never, and never will, become tiring.
December 28, 200816 yr Author 012 Deerhunter 'Nothing Ever Happened' (37-35-25-16-10-07-01-01-02-05-07-10*) http://consequenceofsound.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/microcast.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1JHdSBibO8 Up until September I'd never heard of Deerhunter. I downloaded this song and it sounded decent enough, however it kept growing until it was stuck in my head and eventually became a number one for me. I've listened to a few other songs on their 'Microcastle' album and whilst this is by far the most accessible song of them, it's easy to see why the album has appeared high in so many year end lists. The instrumental second half of the song is as good a piece of music as I've heard all year.
December 28, 200816 yr Author 011 M.I.A. 'Paper Planes' (07-01-01-01-01-02-02-02-03-04-06-08-11-10-15-20-27-31) http://flaccidtrax.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/mia.jpg It makes me sad that this song that shaped the back end of last year and beginning of this hasn't quite managed to make my top 10 but I don't really feel it's quite as good as the 10 songs above it. Whther it has anything to do with its recent exposure I don't know, but it's still one of the years most innovative and inventive singles which thanks to its samples, vocals and gunshots I've enjoyed a hell of a lot throughout the year.

December 31, 200816 yr Author 10 Pendulum 'Propane Nightmares' (34-14-04-01-02-04-04-07-14-20-28-36-39) http://music.unrealitytv.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/pendulum-propane-nightmares.jpg YZBQMJlVXyc I've always felt that Pendulum's first album 'Hold Your Colour' was an underrated gem, it's been great to see it become a very consistant seller over the past three years. What I've heard from 'In Silico' has been a fairly large departure, a lot is watered down and there are a lot more vocals. I guess 'Propane Nightmares' could fit that description too and I'm sure a lot of purists don't like it. However I've adored this song since I first heard it. It may not be their best song but the song is infectious in every way, it still has an excellent bassline in parts of the song and its a real crowdpleaser. One of the very few songs which I can hear on every night out I go on and I won't ever think 'oh, not again!'
December 31, 200816 yr Author 009 The Futureheads 'The Beginning Of The Twist' (18-10-05-02-05-10-13-17-23-30) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61BKrUHB0WL._SL500_AA240_.jpg d7eOGf0mnYg Back in 2005 I adored The Futureheads, 'Hounds of Love' was my number one single of the year and the album was in my top 3 of the year. 2006's 'News & Tributes', although good, was ultimately a disappointment and lead to them being dropped. My interest in the band waned and I can't say I was overly bothered with their comeback, until I heard it that was. This took them back into the charts and back into many's hearts. It was back to classic futureheads, anthemic, catchy and loud. It was edgier, noisier and ultimately much better than anything on their previous album. A great return to form and an album to match. This song was the highlight of the recent live set of theirs I saw too!
December 31, 200816 yr Author 008 PNAU ft Ladyhawke 'Embrace' (04-03-01-01-04-06-04-05-07-11-13-19-26-37) http://1.music.bigpond-images.com/images/AlbumCoverArt/448/XXL/Pnau.jpg eo2aOEhlqfQ I first came across this in the summer, I knew of Ladyhawke but I'd never heard of Australian dance act PNAU. As much as I love Ladyhawke I think this is much better than anything that appears on here debut album, it's a fantastic anthem and is crying out to be a massive hit. Choon.
December 31, 200816 yr Author 007 Digitalism 'Pogo' (19-03-01-01-01-01-03-07-10-10-13-15-22-23-29-38) http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/6800/5099921361913mf1ye0.jpg FGrkGlYqjUo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAu5ppg0c4k [Original Version] Although originally a single from 2007 which made little impact on me, this was re-released in the spring as a remix package with remixes from CSS, Hey Today!, Beni, The Horrors and best of all Shinich Osawa (although for some reasons all of his remixes on youtube sound nothing like the one on the download ep!). After buying their album the original has grown on me quite a lot and I do hold it in high regard but I still feel there are better remixes on this years EP!
December 31, 200816 yr Author 006 Death Cab For Cutie 'I Will Possess Your Heart' (29-18-07-03-02-04-08-11-20-25-28-38) http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/images/uploads/iwillpossess300.jpg nMgQIPu0Cus Until this year I can't say I was that much of a DCFC fan. I loved The Postal Service (Ben Gibbard's other band) but I'd never really been inspired by these, they were ok but I'd never think about buying an album. I saw they had a new single out in May and saw it was over 8 minutes long (it's the longest song in my top 200) and thought it's probably good as a result of its length. I wasn't wrong. The song is nicely split into two fairly even parts. The first four minutes are a gorgeous instrumental and second four is the same melodies but with added vocals. The lyrics are beautiful (like a book elegantly bound but in a language you can't read), a real triumph and by far my favourite song of theirs.
December 31, 200816 yr Author 05 Mystery Jets ft Laura Marling 'Young Love' (08-01-01-01-02-03-05-07-11-15-20-26-37) http://www.banquetrecords.com/graphics/679L152CD.jpg qz-FoGp3p0s I never really liked the songs off Mystery Jets first album so this was a pleasant surprise. An tale of two youngsters who fall for each other but know nothing about them, all condensed into an uplifting three and a half minute pop song. Joyous!
December 31, 200816 yr Author 004 The Last Shadow Puppets 'The Age Of The Understatement' (25-16-11-06-01-01-01-01-01-06-06-11-14-18-23-30-36) http://saleyvale.net/manzarock/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/the-last-shadow-puppets-the-age-of-the-understatement.jpg XGV8xCkpXjE Featuring Alex Turner the Last Shadow Puppets were always something that would intruige me. I wasn't expecting the project to be anywhere near as good as it turned out to be and it was a pleasant surprise. It's a huge departure from both Arctic Monkeys and The Rascals sounds with its 60s influences showing strongly, right from it's intro (which sounds nothing like 'Knights of Cydonia') to the very end. This only making number three means that only one of the top 3 was a personal chart number one, and the average length of the top 3 is just over 6 minutes. December 31, 200816 yr Author 003 Camille 'Money Note' (37-16-08-02-02-02-03-05-06-09-11-13-18-25-29*) http://cdn.7static.com/static/img/sleeveart/00/002/025/0000202568_350.jpg XNO-8B05YLg I'd heard of Camille before, I remember hearing one of her songs in BBC 6 Music's top 10 singles of 2006. It was acoustic, sung in French (not that that's a bad thing) and I thought it was a load of utter tosh. I heard nothing else from here until August of this year when I heard this which had recieved a digital release a couple of weeks prior. It was so far removed from what else I'd heard from her. It's very abstact and really it's a load of nonsence, but it's incredibly fun and feel-good. I find that it suits almost every mood. The song is mainly in English though there are a few French words in there, though they're mainly just muttered in the background. I'd say it's by far the 'wierdest' thing in my top 100. Oh, and she manages to take the p*** out of both Whitney and Mariah - the lady is a goddess! :D This is the highest a song by a French act has ever got in my end of year chart by some distance, a record which will last for.... oooh, 10 minutes maybe? December 31, 200816 yr Author 002 M83 'Kim & Jessie' (36-18-09-04-02-03-04-08-11-15-21-27-38) http://www.recordstore.co.uk/images/covers/mute/KIMJESSE-300.jpg J9yvItZAjfY I'd never heard of M83 until this year (is it M eighty-three or M eight three? It's quite bad that I don't know when it's my 2nd best track of the year. The power of the internet!) however this summer single had generated quite a lot of praise on various forums I frequent and I decided it was worth downloading. Starting with a rather large boom it takes no time getting into the song or building up to anything, it's at full pace pretty much all the way through, full of keyboard goodness. Like both of the other songs in my top 3, it's a song to get lost in. Epic.
