An interview with Mr Van Doorn -_-

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,2...5006024,00.html

SANDER Van Doorn has a secret past. "I used to like gabber," he says, laughing.

``It was a hormonal thing. I was 16. It was very aggressive music -- exactly what you want at that age.''

But, like gabber -- a hardcore techno genre running at 150 to 220 beats-a-minute -- Van Doorn has evolved.

Gabber mutated into trance. And, today, Van Doorn is one of the world's most popular trance DJs.

He is also very passionate about the genre -- a popular movement often dismissed by electronica snobs.

``A few years ago, I felt people were speaking about trance like it was a bad word,'' Van Doorn says.

``But, lately, trance has proven itself to be very serious, and not cheesy. There are great old and new producers still building the road.''

These include Van Doorn's trance DJ peers and fellow Dutchmen, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and Ferry Corsten.

However, Van Doorn stresses traditional trance has progressed.

``Trance was very fast, energetic, flowing music with big breakdowns,'' he says.

``But the influence of electro-house and minimal has lowered the beats-per-minute within trance.''

Brad Drummond, of events giant ID&T, which is staging Trance Energy this month, agrees.

``For a long time, trance was pigeon-holed as kiddie music. Very simple -- synths, hands in the air, build up, breakdown, build up again,'' says Drummond. But the nu-skool trance coming through borrows from everything. It's a kill-your-idols approach that takes from techno, house, prog or pop, creating a new hybrid with no rules.

``It's an exciting time for trance because, for a while, it got a little stale. But all the old rules are gone, and it's exciting again.''

Van Doorn says trance is about the crowd.

``They are the best audience to play for,'' he says. ``They have got an open mind and the trance crowd has always been about community.

``It's for people who want to be part of something.''

The trance community has embraced Van Doorn. He's listed at No. 13 on DJ Magazine top 100 DJs. His album, Supernaturalistic, with techno, minimal and slower beats, was released last year.

Van Doorn has remixed classic tracks by Wamdue Project, Technotronic and Timbaland.

Extrovert pop star Robbie Williams featured on Van Doorn's track Close My Eyes.

Williams's showmanship has influenced Van Doorn too.

``As a DJ, I used to be all about working the knobs and not making any mistakes. But I have since learned it is very important to interact with the crowd,'' he says.

``They will happily give you an answer about the track you're playing.''

Sander Van Doorn performs at Trance Energy (with BT, Judge Jules, Tydi and more) at Calder Park Raceway on Friday. Visit www.trance-energy.com.au for more information.
